i've seen this catalyst a whole lot and it can be utilized pretty often and pretty easily. i'm willing to call it a "snake block", like the entity from Super Mario games.

Code: Select all

Here is a comparison with other replacement catalysts for when a block fails in the same way or similar ways (including a higher-clearance variant (using a long hook with tail instead of a block) of the catalyst that you provided):

Your catalyst (especially the version with a long hook with tail instead of a block) is more versatile than other replacement catalysts for when a block is turned into a ladle spark in that way, so good job!
I am tentatively considering myself back.

Can you find a replacement catalyst for the hook with tail here?

Code: Select all

x = 9, y = 8, rule = B3/S23
o5bo$bo3bo$2b3o2$4bobo$4b2obo$7bo$7b2o!
I don't see a suitable replacement in Tutorials/Catalyses.
If there isn't a stable catalyst that works here, there might be a good solution by using a regenerative loop or grin, because those work in a lot of periods.
Example almost-catalysis with a welded regenerative loop:

Code: Select all

x = 12, y = 10, rule = B3/S23
o5bo$bo3bo$2b3o2$4bobo$4b2ob2o$7b5o$4b2o3b3o$3bo2b2o$3b2o!
A successful catalysis for this could be useful for theoretical high-clearance sparkers:

Code: Select all

x = 14, y = 15, rule = B3/S23
o$3o$3bo$2b2o3$4b3o$3bo3bo$2bo5bo$2bo5bo$2bo5bob2o$3bo3bo3bo$4b3o3bo$
11b3o$13bo!
It might also help complete some partials.

The reason I was looking for a replacement for the hook with tail specifically is that I'm trying to make high-clearance sparkers at less common periods. I also want it to be stable because I might need it if I want to construct a period-19 oscillator, where there are almost no ways to use an oscillator of that period. The Eater + corner-dot solution has considerably less clearance, so unfortunately it doesn't really solve the problem I'm interested in. I was hoping the hook-with-tail reaction could be stabilized compactly while retaining its clearance.

There's a catalyst in goban that is a nice solution:

Code: Select all

It isn't completely identical, but the phi-to-TL reaction above still looks useful.

It was the solution to a partial with the same hook with tail interaction:

Is there a way to turn this specific block catalysis into a dot spark with a repeat time less than 20?

Code: Select all

x = 5, y = 8, rule = B3/S23
bobo$o2bo$o3bo$bobo$2bo2$2b2o$2b2o!
I've tried a few replacements, but they don't look like they can connect to something that produces a dot spark.

I think I just found a new catalyst! I couldn't make it stable:

Code: Select all

x = 16, y = 10, rule = B3/S23
15bo$3b3o2b2o5bo$bob3o2b2o4bo$obobo9bo$o2bo9bo$b2o9bobo$6b2ob2o2bo$7bo
bo$5bobobobo$5b2o3b2o!
It can also eat lines of 3:

Code: Select all

x = 19, y = 13, rule = B3/S23
b2o$4bo11bo$2b3o9b2obo$3bo11b2o4$7bo3bo$7bobobo$b2ob2o2bobo2b2ob2o$2bo
bo9bobo$obobobo5bobobobo$2o3b2o5b2o3b2o!
When I was trying to activate it, I also noticed that it's almost a sort of "tub reagent". I tried to make a tub reagent out of it but I couldn't make it recover.

The first code block is equivalent to this:

Code: Select all

x = 12, y = 10, rule = B3/S23

I just found a cool Blonker catalysis as a high-clearance replacement for these 2 eaters while I was trying to make a traffic light-phi hassler:

Code: Select all

x = 20, y = 24, rule = B3/S23
19bo$17b3o$7b2o7bo$8bo7b2o$8bobo$9b2o$13b3o$12bo3bo$11bo5bo4$2bobo$o7b
2o$2o2b3o3bo$5b2o2$6bo$6bobob2o$9b3o2$13b3o$12bo3bo$11bo5bo!
It also seems to be the smallest replacement for the eaters. Unfortunately I can't seem to find much other uses for this catalysis, but it could be helpful for more phi hasslers.

Is there a replacement of the ship here?

Eater bridge eater should work, but it fails by ONE cell.

If possible: is should be able to support both reactions:

There is a periodic catalyst that works here, but I have yet to find a stable one:

It's really close, but not close enough.
