Game of life on hexagonal, Penrose, and einstein tiling

Post by bellissimogiorno »

Hello all. It may interest the members of this message board to know about my new vibe-coded "Game of Life" package.

This covers square, hexagonal, and aperiodic tilings --- and perhaps most interestingly, it includes a catalogue of example configurations, some of which are to the best of my knowledge novel and hitherto unknown.

The package can be run online by following the link above. It can also be downloaded and run locally. Code is open-source under the MIT license.

It's great to have this both online and downloadable -- many thanks!

Are you planning to add any more aperiodic tiling families? There's one example in the list that's labeled "Spectre variant", but the tiling still looks like a hat tiling and I can see two orientations of tiles. It would be fun to see something running on tilings made from a few of the many entertaining shape variants for single-orientation Spectre tiles.

I'm personally also a long-time fan of golden-b tilings, which are kind of like a square grid with golden-ratio aperiodicity magically mixed in. See also page 28 of the "Art" section of the G4G13 Exchange book, though some of those dissections have different-sized tiles and would be hard to get a CA running on.

Very nice! I'm particularly grateful for the link to the paper by James Edmond (https://arxiv.org/pdf/2609.22579). I've uploaded new versions of my HatLife and SpectreLife scripts which add support for the glider-generating rules found by James.

More details at the end of the corresponding threads linked in my signature below.
