Glitched Double-On Cell

Post by 8than888 »

I found a glitch in a Conway's Game Of Life app where when you tap an oscillating cell while it's running, it turns into a glitched cell:
glitchedcell.gif
glitchedcell.gif (242.6 KiB) Viewed 348 times
which adds an invisible cell on top of that cell, but it doesn't affect it. I was able to recreate it in a Cellular Automata Builder using these rules, assuming that the glitched cells don't interact:
Off→On:
AND[On=3,GlitchedOff=0,GlitchedOn=0],AND[On=2,GlitchedOff=1,GlitchedOn=0],AND[On=1,GlitchedOff=0,GlitchedOn=1]
On→Off:
AND[On>3,GlitchedOff≥0,GlitchedOn≥0],AND[On>2,GlitchedOff>0,GlitchedOn≥0],AND[On>1,GlitchedOff≥0,GlitchedOn>0],AND[On<2,GlitchedOff=0,GlitchedOn=0],AND[On<1,GlitchedOff=1,GlitchedOn=0]
GlitchedOff→GlitchedOn:
AND[On=3]
GlitchedOn→GlitchedOff:
AND[On≠2,On≠3]

Here are some patterns I found with it:

The Cellular Automata Builder is a bit hard to use, though. I think I need a way to recreate this in Golly or LifeViewer.

My first thought was StateInvestigator, but it doesn't quite match. Here is the labeled p19 with a StateInvestigator state 4 cell. It's a valid oscillator, but it's p8. I believe the difference is that the glitched cell can turn on and count as two while it's on, while the state 4 cell always counts as 1 regardless.

Code: Select all

x = 10, y = 11, rule = StateInvestigator

I almost did a double-take when I saw a reaction eating a Glider.

I just made a working version in LifeViewer!

Code: Select all

I vibe coded the rule with some help from ChatGPT, since I'm not familiar with LifeViewer rule scripting. The rule is based on my recreation of the glitch, though.

Edit: I learned how @TABLE worked and I optimized it:

Code: Select all

Post by otismo »

Playing with the double-on cells, trying to find a shape

that would be THE Generative Singularity,

or at least some kind of Ivy Box

Code: Select all

x = 815, y = 551, rule = DoubleOn
