OCA Discovery of the Year 2025 Nominations
OCA Discovery of the Year 2025 Nominations
(Well, It's already 2026 in some place, so I posted this thread.)
Rules from this 2018 thread apply. In essence: nominations should be interesting and nontrivial, and they should be from the 2025 calendar year (UTC).
Nominations will close when the voting thread is created, which won't happen until June 1st, 2026 at earliest.
It would be appreciated if you include a short description for each of your nominations to explain why they may be interesting to others.

Re: OCA Discovery of the Year 2025 Nominations
Two of your years seem to be off by one. I assume the discoveries need to be from 2025 and voting will start in 2026?
Unrelated, but I also think 5 months is way too long of a wait; people will forget what happened in 2025.

Re: OCA Discovery of the Year 2025 Nominations
Thanks, at the time between 2 year, I always get confused. I think i fixed that.hotdogPi wrote: December 31st, 2025, 12:02 pm Two of your years seem to be off by one. I assume the discoveries need to be from 2025 and voting will start in 2026?
Last year's voting starts also on June, so why too long?hotdogPi wrote: December 31st, 2025, 12:02 pm Unrelated, but I also think 5 months is way too long of a wait; people will forget what happened in 2025.
Anyway, to keep it ontopic, here's nominations' names that's made by myself:
- HexaSmodel rule: first infinite nested SMOSMOS...MOS on a hexagonal grid in 32 states
- TNT: first OCA recreation of APGsembly and a lot of other things engineered
- ugh i can't remember more...

TTs, a Turing-Complete margolus supporting 2TFL rule with known p3, p5, p7, p8, and p11 reflectors of the 'T' spaceship. The most recent version of the full stamp collection can be found at User:PK22/OCA:Travelling Ts/Full Stamp Collection This is outdated. 2 important things it does not include are the 3c/8 distaff and the most recent version of the quadratic growth pattern. I will try to make the collection before OCA DOTY 2025 voting.

Nominating my OCA rule Checkerboard, Day and Night, with the initial post on Jan 8:
This rule is interesting because all patterns behave the same way when XOR pasted onto a checkerboard agar.
The thread for exploration of that rule is at viewtopic.php?f=11&t=7050. I have used the p34 to construct technologies such as splitters and NAND gates.R2INT wrote: January 8th, 2025, 2:22 pm I have recently been experimenting with rules that are not only self-complimentary, behaving the same way in both black and white universes, but also checkerboard-complimentary, meaning they also behave the same in a checkerboarded universe. Re: OCA Discovery of the Year 2025 Nominations
I will try to make some time to review the and finalize the list over the weekend, but just from a precursory glance I can see a few errors/obvious things that can be improved
There are 2 big errors:
The nomination list is still missing #9.
Katrina has her name misspelled as Kathina. Additionally the link leads to this thread not her post
Some things that should really be fixed :
nomination 16 has "and others the list missed"
I like the formatting here better "(Yujh, NimbleRogue, vilc, WhiteHawk, unix with clock, R2INT, FWKnightship, b-engine, et al.)" Additionally we could just put in less names/ narrow the nomination.
The nomination is also way to long without providing meaningful information for the nomination. I would say that if we want to talk
Nomination 2 should also have its attributions cleared up
Nominations 4 and 13 are too similar. I would vote that they either be merged into one, or at least we say something more about the SMOSMOSMOS by splitterrules other than just "another 54 SMOSMOSMOS"

Re: OCA Discovery of the Year 2025 Nominations
Thoughts:
In general the titles and descriptions of all of the nominations can probably be refined
Thoughts on specific nominations:
I also found a few more possible nominations to add (not formatted yet). There are probably some more that could be added especially spaceships in OT rules, and individual rules which I may not be as caught up on. Most of this list was just found from looking at the discord starboard so it also may have missed some discoveries from forum only users. Can people look through these and say which of these they want to include in the list/ more that they have thought of?

In general the titles and descriptions of all of the nominations can probably be refined
Thoughts on specific nominations:
- Don't like the explinations for #1, #6, #9, but other then that they are fine
- #2 could use some cleanup on the wording as it is covering too much and does not have enough explination. Can anyone who knows more about in rewrite it?
- I separated both of the SMOSMOSMOS nominations but if someone has a better idea please let me know
- I have attributed #11 to Naszvadi too because the post linked is by them but the original attribution was only to Confocaloid. Could Naszvadi explain more?
- I think #12 should be deleted because it seems that the only one ship of a known speed but I am open if Naszvadi have other opinions
- The nomination for #14 is way to long. There is too much being nominated and the list of contributers is too long. Can someone who has done a lot of work with it help refine it. We should be highlighting the main contributers and the main discoveries. Would this suffice for the description? "a Turing-Complete margolus supporting 2TFL rule with 5 known periods of reflector"
- I don't understand what the nomination description for #16 is supposed to say. Could Docsy Reword it so it is more descriptive? Docsy wrote: October 3rd, 2026, 4:25 am Proof that phoenix spaceships without B012a cannot reach the speed limit of rules without B012a

Re: OCA Discovery of the Year 2025 Nominations
Oh sure, I can reword the nomination:
Proof that phoenix spaceships without B012a are slower than c/2o and c/3d (and related oblique speeds).
It's worth noting that Eppstein had proved many years ago that it was the case for rules without B012ac. Not sure if that should be noted as a caveat.
