The design has three degrees of freedom:
- The placement of the white trigger signal. Delaying this signal by 2 ticks will increase the vertical displacement by 4 cells, and the period by 8 ticks.
- The placement of the yellow trigger signal. Delaying this signal by 2 ticks will increase the horizontal displacement by 4 cells, and the period by 8 ticks.
- The separation of the two "halves". Moving the halves apart from each other by one cell diagonally increases the period by 8 ticks.
I was concerned about the potential for diagonal or close to diagonal velocities not being achievable. The paths that the trigger-signal-comprising MWSSs take do intersect. In the design pattern above, one can see that the blue history cells from the "paths" of some MWSSs overlap. This means that certain placements of the trigger signals will lead to them interfering with each other and the spaceship failing to work. To achieve a diagonal velocity, the trigger signals would need to be placed in a similar location to achieve an equal horizontal and vertical displacement, so the concern is that they would interfere with each other.
However, after looking into this further, I don't believe this is a problem. We can solve any such issues by simply multiplying the displacement and period by some factor. Suppose the placements of the white trigger signal and the yellow trigger signal are specified by p_1 and p_2 respectively, where p_1 is a positive integer equal to the number of tricks the white trigger signal has been delayed from some arbitrary base position (p_2 has the equivalent meaning for the yellow trigger signal). When considering if the trigger signals will intefere with each other, the only thing that matters is the difference between p_1 and p_2.
There will be some finite range in which all problematic differences are located within. Suppose this range is [a,b], where a and b are integers. Now suppose our current placement of the trigger signals is such that p_1 - p_2 is in [a,b]. This can be resolved by multiplying the period and displacement by some factor. Let (m,n) be the simplified displacement (gcd's factored out). We can simultaneously increase p_1 by km and p_2 by kn for any positive integer k to achieve the same simplified velocity (an adjustment to the separation between halves would also be necessary here to get the period right). The difference between trigger signals' positions would then be k(p_1 - p_2). We simply need to make k large enough to ensure that k(p_1 - p_2) does not fall in the interval [a,b].
However, you may notice that p_1 - p_2 may equal zero! In that case, modifying k would do nothing. p_1 equaling p_2 corresponds to the spaceship having a perfectly diagonal velocity.
Fortunately, it turns out that [a,b] does not contain zero. I investigated adjusting the omniship to have a perfectly diagonal velocity. It turns out the necessary placement of trigger signals for this does not result in them interfering with each other.
