Rules One Transition Away from being Outer-Totalistic

Post by rabbit »

Over the past few years I have become interested in rules that are almost a part of the outer-totalistic rulespace, but have one transition that is flipped from what it should be. In rulestring terms, this means that the rules have only one letter (and optionally one dash). Notable examples include Just Friends (B2-a/S12), Travelling Ts, and every rule 1 transition from Life.

This space preserves the (relatively) small size of OT while increasing it to support more interesting rules, while the rules within remain simple to describe (e.g. "it's like B2/S12, but without B2a").

The rest of this introductory post will be short descriptions of interesting rules I have come across.

B34i/S125
Starting off with my favourite rule so far. The most obvious impact that the +B4i has on the base rule's behaviour is that the banana triplet (o$b2o!) becomes a 7-generation spark instead of stabilizing into two adjacent dominoes. It preserves the 2x2 block oscillators that gave 2x2 its name.

It has two common spaceships, one being the c/8 diagonal ship from 2x2 (which is significantly more common in this rule), and the other being a new p15 c/3 spaceship that has a massive backspark, and can interact with other copies of itself to form puffers:

Code: Select all

x = 70, y = 91, rule = B34i/S125

38bobo6b2o!
There is also a 2c/12 diagonal spaceship and a peculiar-looking c/6 diagonal spaceship:

Code: Select all

x = 16, y = 6, rule = B34i/S125
b3o10bo$2obo8bo2bo$3bobo6bo2bo$o9bo3b2o$b3o9bo$13bo!
There is a p2 from 2x2 that becomes a sparky p4 in this rule, which can interact with another copy of itself in at least four different ways:

Code: Select all

x = 47, y = 7, rule = B34i/S125

$11b3o6bobobo6bobobo6bobobo!
Also, a failed gun exists with period 45, that can be stabilized with well-placed dominos:

Code: Select all

x = 27, y = 5, rule = B34i/S125
o9b2o3b2o9bo$o10b2ob2o10bo2$11b2ob2o$10b2o3b2o!
The reaction evolves from a line of 5 cells connected orthogonally.

B35678/S2-k3

This rule supports a very common (2, 1)c/17 R-pentomino spaceship, along with the 2c/8 orthogonal spaceship from B367/S23, as well as very rare c/22 diagonal and c/6 orthogonal as well:

Code: Select all

x = 30, y = 7, rule = B35678/S2-k3
b2o6b2o7b3o6b3o$3o5b2o7bo2bo6b3o$obo6bo6b2obobo$bo16bobo7bo$28bo$27bob
o$28bo!
Three of them only work due to B8.

There are many interesting oscillators in this rule as well, with highlights being the p3 section, the tiny p4 sparker, and the huge p60 on the bottom:

Code: Select all

x = 88, y = 111, rule = B35678/S2-k3

The R ship can eat blocks, and the 2c/8 can be eaten by the p4 sparker:

Code: Select all

11b2o$11b2o!
No linear growth patterns have appeared naturally or semi-naturally yet, and I haven't found any reliable stable catalysts due to births above 5 cells being impossible to prevent with more on cells. However, the rule seems quite conducive to periodic sparkers because -S2k can cause a leading two-cell edge to die out.

B2-a4578/S128

No common spaceships, but there is a p56 spinner and 30c/60 (c/2) 1D replicator that leads to explosions, as well as a related 448c/896 (c/2) puffer:

Code: Select all

x = 83, y = 49, rule = B2-a4578/S128

B378/S123i6

This rule has a 3c/10 replicator, as well as elementary orthogonal spaceships of speeds c/2, 2c/4, 2c/8, 2c/10, and 6c/44:

Code: Select all

x = 57, y = 5, rule = B378/S123i6

Excluding 1TFL rules, HeartLife, Sea Slugs, and Heights are other examples of such rules that already have their own thread.
There's a lot you can do by just reassembling known components.

B36/S124a5 is highly explosive, but features a 5c/15 spaceship and a c/2 replicator:

Code: Select all

x = 2, y = 14, rule = B36/S124a5
o$o$bo$bo$o$o5$o$o$o$o!
B3/S124a5 (-B6 from the above rule) is less explosive, and the spaceship becomes this p129 (43*3) <corrected> puffer instead:

Code: Select all

x = 74, y = 12, rule = B3/S124a5

o$15b2o!
It's worth noting that a certain p2 oscillator that resembles a glider works in parts of this rulespace, such as B35/S23n4 which also features a c/4 orthogonal and a c/12 diagonal spaceship, both relatively common, as well as uncommon p10 and p14 oscillators:

Code: Select all

x = 40, y = 5, rule = B35/S23n4
bo3bobobo6bo8b2o2b2o3b6o$2bo2bo3bo6bo10b2o5b2o2b2o$3o3b3o4bo2bo10b2o5b
ob2obo$6bobo5b3o9bo2bo$26b4o!
EDIT: Further searching of that last rule brought c/2 and 2c/24 orthogonal spaceships:

Code: Select all

x = 17, y = 5, rule = B35/S23n4
b2o2b2o4bo$3o2b3o2b2ob2o$o6bo7b2o$bo4bo5bo$2b4o7b4o!
EDIT2: The rule also features the p4 spinning glider from OCA:Move, so it's got two of them.

Calculations for how many rules there are in this 'rulespace':
If we exclude B0 and B1, there are 2^16 outer-totalistic rules, and as there are 102 different isotropic conditions, minus B01ce8/S08 gives us 96, so 2^16 x 96, which gives us 1.5 x 2^21 rules that belong here.
Please visit my rules (found on my wiki page) and contribute!

Three interesting-looking rules based on B37/S3567, a totalistic rule with uncommon c/2 spaceships/puffers:

B367/S34k567 has a non-monotonic c/6 spaceship and an almost-replicator:

Code: Select all

x = 27, y = 4, rule = B367/S34k567

Interesting oscillators of periods 8 and 20, c/2 spaceships of periods 32, 48, 56, 596, as well as a growing spaceship with a backend of speed 14c/32:

Code: Select all

x = 127, y = 24, rule = B367/S34k567

B37/S2-a3567 is closer to life due to adding most of S2, and features a small c/3 spaceship, while adding a high degree of instability to the puffer engines:

Code: Select all

x = 27, y = 5, rule = B37/S2-a3567
2bo18bo3bo$bobo16b3ob3o$2ob2o16b5o$21b5o$25bo!
Rare natural spaceships include 2c/4 orthogonal, 2c/5 orthogonal, and c/6 diagonal:

Lastly, B3-c67/S3567 has a genuine p98 c/2 replicator, but no small spaceships:

Code: Select all

x = 7, y = 7, rule = B3-c67/S3567
bo3bo$3ob3o$b5o$b5o$b5o$3ob3o$bo3bo!
Fortunately, guns can still be constructed for some less common spaceships:

This one is a p196 gun for a 50c/100 spaceship.

c/2 spaceships exist at periods 8, 34, 100, and 192:

Code: Select all

15c/106 orthogonal 1D replicator in B356/S34a578:

Code: Select all

I find the last rule the most interesting of the three. It is, unfortunately, barely explosive, so searching it can be difficult.

EDIT: It is most readily explosive along lines of odd reflective symmetry, so searching symmetries which necessarily eliminate those (such as D8_4) is best. Asymmetric explosions only happen in much larger soups.
