I'm not sure if this rule is threadworthy, but I'm giving it a shot.

This is an HROT rule I found while looking for range-two Life-like rules. It is technically a variant of this rule, which I also named "Pottery", differing only by an added birth and survival transition. But I'm moving the name to this rule because I think its slightly better.

Behavior

Pottery is indeed Life-like, being expansive and long-lived, with identifiable evolutionary sequences and a variety of objects.

So far, I've only identified two common evolutionary sequences.

The one on the left is definitely more useful than the one on the right, releasing a spaceship and some other junk, before stabilizing at 164 generations.

Still lives

Some of the most common still lives include a 3x3 block, a hollow 4x3 rectangle (which is a good eater), a weird rectangular one that bulges in the middle, and a 4x4 hollow square. There are many more still lifes besides these, and because of the neighborhood range being two, there are many times more possibilities for still lifes than in the standard range-1.

Interestingly, there are a diverse amount of still lifes with very similar properties. The only thing that actually makes this rule stand out, they are why I gave it the name "Pottery". These are large, hollow, geometrical still lifes that come in many different shapes and sizes, kind of like real pottery throughout the world. They probably don't have many use cases, as they are very fragile.

Oscillators

The most common oscillators in the rule are rather boring. There's a couple billiard tables, a length-two Margolus oscillator, and some other weird ones.

But out of the handful of high-period oscillators, there are three that stand out. In increasing rarity, these are: A period-50 strong sparker, a period-160 RRO, and a period-100 very spurty oscillator.

More high-period oscillators might appear in future agpsearching, but the first two will probably be the basis for most technology since they are the most common (the p100 has only happened in C2_1).

Spaceships

There are five natural spaceships in the rule. Two of them, a c/3d and c/6o, are by far the most common. The relative frequency of both spaceships combined (15.4) is still lower than the relative frequency of Life's glider (11.4).

Using four copies of the p160, I was able to make the first gun in this rule, firing the c/3d. Finding guns with these super sparky high-period oscillators is essentially a matter of getting the right reaction from the oscillators's sparks colliding, and seeing if you can turn it into a spaceship. I'd like to eventually see a gun using three or even just two copies of the oscillator.

Search programs that work with this rule
  • factoriosrc: Sucessor to rlifesrc that supports HROT. It can pretty much search everything rlifesrc can. Its in early development and is missing a few features.
  • CAViewer and cfind: A program that is meant to be capable of simulating a very large variety of rules, including HROT. It has built in searching for catalysts and agars. cfind, a program that comes with CAViewer, is capable of searching spaceships in all rule types supported by CAViewer, although I've found it to be slow and buggy.

If c stands for the speed of light in this rule, then your spaceship velocities are wrong, since c in a range-2 rule is 2 cells/gen.
Therefore, the following spaceships' speeds would be 0.5c/3d, 0.5c/6o, 0.5c/2o, 3c/24o and 0.5c/4o, respectively.

I haven't worked with HROT rules before, so idk if this is correct.
You are correct, but I just kept the speeds measured under the definition if c was one cell per generation, since we're all used to that and it gives us a better initial understanding of the spaceships.

I managed to submit syntheses to Catagolue using CAViewer, but I had to do it in an unorthodox way (just duplicating all the files to be in the apgmera folder rather than the CAViewer folder inside it). The soups are just fine and valid, but only one sample soup was there for each object. So here's the next best thing: The log which contains all the sample soups (including multiple soups for a single object).

EDIT: A small nearly 600-generation-long Methuselah that stabilizes into a single piece of pottery.

Over 400 results were picked up over the course of a few hours, using a large pool of 60 random still lifes I found on Catagolue to choose from. Many of the results are false alarms, but that doesn't mean there isn't anything interesting left to go through.

I'm glad you like it. This is the rule I've been focused on over the past couple of weeks, my attention has shifted from Flockenstein to this. Doesn't mean I'm done with the rule, I just haven't found a good balance.
