b35s126 (Flockenstein)

Post by Hunter »

Hi I'm really new to this community, (seeing that this is my first post). So I'm basically an idiot at every topic there is of cellular automata.

Anyways after playing around with this rule I come to really love it. My main interest right now is making a gun. The best oscillators that have been discovered that may have gun potential are

Code: Select all

x = 8, y = 5, rule = B35/S126
b3ob3o$3b2obo$obob3o$3b2obo$b3ob3o!
and

Code: Select all

x = 6, y = 9, rule = B35/S126
2o2b2o3$bo2bo$2o2b2o$bo2bo3$2o2b2o!
The goal is to make glider 317:
x = 3, y = 4, rule = B35/S126
obo$2o$bo$2bo!

Would love it people would chip in with finding discoveries on oscillators, spaceships, and eventually guns and puffers. :D

The spaceships I discovered through gfind but are not found on the catalogue (either naturally or with ikpx2) are:
A c/4:

Welcome to the world of cellular automata! The rule you've shared with us isn't bad, but it looks unlikely that engineered guns/puffers can be made with this rule, mainly due to the rarity of the most common spaceship, this little c/3.

Code: Select all

x = 4, y = 3, rule = B35/S126
b2o$4o$2obo!
From what I've seen it only arises from patches of random cells. But there's probably a variant of this rule where the spaceships become more common (ideally, you would want them to come from very small patterns, like how the Glider can come from the R-pentomino or Herschel.)

Don't worry! That doesn't mean there's nothing to do with this rule. There is no right way to play with cellular automata, and it looks like there are some other avenues that can be taken. LowLife, for example, has a similar spaceship problem (and a few other properties similar to your rule), but I had fun investigating it, and eventually my consistent interest with the rule got it proven turing-complete. And regardless, its always good to at least try. You never know what you might stumble across while messing with a rule.
I could've chose a better username, but oh well.

I think I've learned the ropes of cellular automata. My current interest is range-two LTLs.

Turns out you can make the c/3 elementary by adding a single dot near the common T-tetromino oscillator in this rule.

Code: Select all

x = 5, y = 4, rule = B35/S126
3bo$2b3o$2bobo$o!
Triggered unsafely with period-7 sparker:

Code: Select all

x = 24, y = 15, rule = B35/S126
$11bo$9bo3bo$10bobo$9bo3b2o$11bo2bo$12bobo$4b3o4bo2bo$5bo3bo3b2o$10bo
bo$9bo3bo$11bo!
If we could figure out how to automate the reaction, then guns/rakes could be possible, and this could be a substantial rule, especially as its outer-totalistic. That's a big if though, because we would need to figure out how to spawn those oscillators from something without that something getting destroyed.

Engineered 4G synthesis for glider 317, based off of the T-oscillator reaction I mentioned earlier.

The T-oscillator can be pulled by glider 317's.

x = 4, y = 45, rule = B35/S126
bobo2$4o9$bobo2$4o9$bobo2$4o9$bobo2$4o7$obo2$3o!
Should we give the spaceship its own name, or would it be too early?

Two more very simple but probably harder to execute syntheses of Glider 317 from already stable patterns.

Adding two sparks near the T-oscillator in this specific phase:

Code: Select all

x = 4, y = 5, rule = B35/S126
2o$2bo$2o$3bo$o!
Adding an obo spark near this diagonal line of four:

Code: Select all

x = 6, y = 5, rule = B35/S126
5bo$4bo$o2bo$2bo$o!
EDIT: Got excited when I saw a period-132 oscillator after apgsearching D2_+2 - turned out to be an LCM between a period-11 oscillator and the period-12 T-oscillator.

Code: Select all

x = 18, y = 9, rule = B35/S126

C/5 diagonal linestretcher found with Rlifesrc, probably the first infinite growth pattern to be found in this rule.

During my search I also stumbled across these two c/4d's which I think are new. I also saw a lot of tagalongs for them. Later today I might do some ikpx2 searching.

Code: Select all

EDIT: Apparently that wickstretcher was a spaceship with a couple tagalongs. Removing them you get a surprisingly small but probably useless c/5d.

EDIT 2: ikpx2 searching yielded a c/4d and reduced c/5d linestretcher. Guess that spaceship isn't so useless after all.

Searching tagalongs for c/4o's didn't get any linear growth, and searching tagalongs for this c/6 didn't even get anything. To be fair, both searches were kinda short.

Thank you. I had some prior experience discovering things in LowLife.

Anyways, here's a proof of concept that exceptionally high-clearance sparkers can be used to produce T-oscillators, with the oscillators being removed using LifeViewer commands.

Code: Select all

x = 39, y = 26, rule = B35/S126

If a spark could be added in the right place by the oscillator, a gun could be made using this technique. But for a full design, we would probably need much higher-period sparkers, and of course a finished oscillator. And we might also need an extra sparker to supply the spark that turns the T-oscillator into a glider 317. Finding all of those things is not exactly an easy task, so I hope with more exploration I can find an easier solution to potentially making guns/breeders.

While looking for stable T-oscillator eaters, I found these reactions between it and two half-ponds, resulting in two Glider 317's and nothing else. They shoot the gliders in different ways too.

Code: Select all

x = 28, y = 8, rule = B35/S126
21b2o3b2o$2bobo18bobo$2bobo18bobo$2o3b2o2$2bobo18bobo$2bobo18b3o$3bo20b
o!
I also saw a third one between the T-oscillator and two dominoes, but I cannot for the life of me (no pun intended) recreate it.

Its really strange how there are several easy reactions that summon a glider, yet the spaceship itself isn't super common. There's probably a close variant of this rule where the evolution lines up just right to significantly boost how common this spaceship is.

I did some overnight Catagolue searching for a few symmetries, and I think the only new high-period oscillator from that was this one in C4_1. It seems to be a semi-natural flock hassler.

Code: Select all

x = 15, y = 15, rule = B35/S126
12bo$7b2o2bo$o5b2o$bo5b2o2$7b2o$bobob2obo3bo$b3obo3bob3o$2bo3bob2obob
o$6b2o2$6b2o5bo$7b2o5bo$3bo2b2o$2bo!
It might be a stretch to say, but I think this is a failed period-10 diagonal spaceship.

Code: Select all

x = 4, y = 4, rule = B35/S126
2b2o$bobo$o2bo$b2o!

I've made a Golly script to generate random 5-Glider 317 collisions for uploading the results to Catagolue, under "5Gcolls_stdin". This is actually my first time submitting soups in a custom stdin to Catagolue outside of ikpx2. I really hope nothing's super broken. Time to upload some in large amounts and see what happens.

EDIT: 500 soups have been uploaded to the symmetry. It seems like the main problem is that sometimes gliders will end up overlapping each other

Code: Select all

x = 0, y = 0, rule = B35/S126
19bo$21bo$19bo2bo$22b3o$21bob2o$22bo27$obo$2o30bo2bo$bo31b2o$2bo29b2o4$5bo2bo$6b2o$5b2o!
And end up corrupting some of the census results. Wouldn't be so bad if Catagolue was adding more than one sample soup per object. But guess what? It isn't. And to clarify, I did do testing of the script and how apgluxe would make sense of the hauls, so I'm pretty sure this is the only actual bug.

I suppose I can rewrite my program to prevent gliders being placed too close to one another.

EDIT 2: Not related to the previous topic, but here's an almost reflector.

Code: Select all

x = 26, y = 20, rule = B35/S126
13bobo2$12b4o4$4bo4bo$5bo$5bobo3bo5bo2bo$4bobo9b6o$o2bo5bo5bobob3o$b2o
5bo5b3o3bo$3bo5b2o4bo7b2o$2bo5bo2bo3b2o5b4o$5bobo6b4o5b2o$o3bobo8b2o7b
o$6bo12bo3b3o$2bo4bo10b3obobo$18b6o$19bo2bo!
#C [[ STOP 18 ]]
The glider is sucessfully reflected, but there isn't enough time or clearance for it to make it past the second oscillator. This is definitely possible though.

And on the topic of Glider 317 and collisions, here's a collision where one glider destroys the other and safely moves on.

Code: Select all

x = 12, y = 11, rule = B35/S126
bobo2$4o5$9bobo$9bo$9bobo$9bo!

Right now its just Glider 317. I don't know why but it kind of looks like a meh face forward rolling across the grid, so we could call it Roller. It certainly takes a lot of imagination to name these small patterns...

Stuff I found with the light speed fuse including an AND gate and ANDNOT gate:

Thanks, the program is working now. I've done some soups for not just 5G collisions, but 8G and 3G as well. I think that's all we'll need for synthesis censuses.

Here's an odd reaction where a glider collides with a 9-cell still life and produces another glider in the opposite direction, shifted one cell downwards. The still life in question is the fifth most-common 9-bit still life in C1.

Code: Select all

x = 13, y = 7, rule = B35/S126

I could've chose a better username, but oh well.

I think I've learned the ropes of cellular automata. My current interest is range-two LTLs.
