qqd wrote: February 4th, 2026, 1:14 pm Interesting reaction between an R-pentomino and a block + blinker constellation:

Code: Select all

x = 9, y = 15, rule = B3/S23
8bo$8bo$8bo$4b2o$4b2o8$2o$b2o$bo!
The R gets converted into a Herschel, 'flipping' the block + blinker constellation and preserving the parity of the blinker (consuming the Herschel's FNG in the process) and releasing an additional glider.
Now, if we had a way to turn that Herschel back into a 'flipped' R which reacts with the block + blink constellation in the exact same way, we may have a gun that utilizes this reaction. That doesn't look very possible though, with the low Herschel clearance.
I gave up trying to make a self-supporting loop, but here's an ugly p284 (minimum) gun-supported completion:

Code: Select all

x = 127, y = 226, rule = B3/S23Super

My first time trying to find patterns. Wrote a search script for single-channel glider construction with 61 tick minimum spacings. So far I found one (1) recipe which returns to a pi-explosion target. It pulls the block back an odd amount and emits a 0-degree glider.

Code: Select all

x = 153, y = 146, rule = LifeHistory

Gliders are spaced 75, 73, 72, 67, 61, (earliest follow-up glider 204)

Can you provide a link? I've actually been developing a very similar search program (perhaps more general then yours, it supports OCA) at https://github.com/speedydelete/lifeweb!
I manage the 5S project, which collects all known spaceship speeds in certain rulespaces.

The elementary conduit RF29P appears to be known, but it has only been mentioned once on the forums by iNoMed:
iNoMed wrote: September 23rd, 2022, 5:42 am Here's a 31x40 QBless p30 gun via R pentomino hassler, using the trusty periodic R-to-G conversion of RF29P:

Code: Select all

x = 28, y = 39, rule = B3/S23

And that too as a periodic variant. So I am not sure whether these stable variants are known:

Both these variants don't appear to be connectable, for the first has bad input clearance while the second has terrible output clearance.
Replacing the fishhook with a toad in the first variant leads to an Eonian variant of HF29P:

Code: Select all

x = 15, y = 16, rule = B3/S23

As shown by iNoMed, you can extract a glider from these HF29P variants using a clock or another suitable periodic catalyst:
In any case, here is an edgy beehive factory based on a failed variant of HF29P, which seems to be new:

Code: Select all

x = 20, y = 19, rule = B3/S23

I might have discovered a new unsynthesizable oscillator(s). It is period 2 and uses a known but rediscovered self-forcing agar patch. It has 481 self-forcing cells, out of 577 ±1 population, making it smaller than Unsynthesizable Oscillator 1.

EDIT 1: After further looking around I managed to find that the oscillator may be invalid.
EDIT 2: According to 400spartans, both patterns contain self-forcing patches.

This RLE contains the first original pattern from LLS, and the reduced version by Blinkerspawn on Discord:

That wouldn't work, since that fuse isn't reburnable. It can only burn on tubs, and I highly doubt that it can be made into a crawler using multiple copies. Even if you do manage to make a rake, it still wouldn't be chainable since it costs 3 gliders per tub, and those tubs are too close to each other for a 3G synthesis anyway.

I created a couple of "glider hasslers".

These are based on one-time turner reactions for a glider such that the turned glider reaches the same column as it started (and is flipped), and the reaction can be repeated if the bait object is recreated.

Here is the mechanism for the first reaction.

Code: Select all

#C A glider turning reaction using two blinkers.
#C This was used by Dean Hickerson to make a growing spaceship by
#C using two puffers to lay down two blinker trails which a
#C glider slowly consumes.
x = 7, y = 8, rule = B3/S23
o3bo$o3bo$o3bo3$4b3o$4bo$5bo!
Here is an oscillator which drives the reaction repeatedly.

Code: Select all

#C A period 40 oscillator based on a two-blinker glider turner reaction.
#C Two sets of blinker pairs are created by staggered period 40 glider
#C guns. A glider repeatedly destroys a pair of blinkers every 20
#C generations while being flipped.

While looking through Catagolue, I noticed this twin bees shuttle pair. Is this a (very weak) p46 T-nose?

It has a synthesis, but isn't in oscthread_stdin, so someone has noticed it but not posted about it.

I am tentatively considering myself back.

btw uh i made diagonal-line-eating puffer that emits loaves and i also made a loaf-eating puffer that emit blocks and i also stole breeder 1's backrake 3 and aligned it in the perfect angle that it will destroy the blocks (also i call the diagonal-line-eating things "line killers" for some reason) also uuh i also made 2 line killers that does not puffer and just does its job

why am i posting this here

EDIT by dvgrn: Welcome to the forums! I've moved your post over to a more appropriate thread.

These descriptions sound familiar. We usually call line killers "fuses". If they clean up the wick that they're following, they're called "clean fuses".

People have been interested in fuses since the very early days of Conway's Life. You could post yours here in RLE format and see what people think of them.

Your first stage might be a rediscovery of the "baker", for example, but it's hard to tell from just a description. What software are you using to build these patterns? Most CA software allows you to select a pattern and copy it, usually in RLE format that our LifeViewer plugin can then simulate for everyone (if you enclose the RLE code in "pattern" tags).

Slightly late welcome to the forums. Please do not post images of patterns to share them (especially broken ones), as outlined in the forum rules.

Instead, post the RLE code of the pattern within "pattern" tags. The easiest way to obtain the RLE code of a pattern is to select the pattern in Golly and then copy it to your clipboard.
  1. Enclose all patterns within "pattern" tags. "LV" tags should only be used in extremely rare cases, primarily when the topic of the post is an animation displayed by LifeViewer waypoint commands included in the RLE comments. In those rare cases when using "LV" tags, the [[ THUMBNAIL ]] command should be used to reduce the amount of vertical space taken up by the viewer.
I do not know what pattern you mean, however I’m guessing this one:

In fact, it's the beacon maker mentioned in that article.

I noted this a while back, not sure if that should be added to the list on one-time turner list, even if it is only a 90 degree reflector and needs 2 still life, but since this works, and is fast, that might be listed for that reason:

Code: Select all

x = 44, y = 32, rule = LifeHistory

You can also use the same constellation to 'hammer' an HWSS to an MWSS with an extra Herschel:

Code: Select all

x = 112, y = 55, rule = B3/S23

[[ STOP 183 ]]
Possibly there's a way to remove the extra blinker with an appropriate FNG eater or 180-degree reflector.
