However, I ran some sims for what is the best elbow.
The best space ship is creeper.
The best elbow is block.

Creeper + Block
Both rows are the same (remember blocks are symmetrical) and the last three for both rows are the same (they're rewinded versions of each other). The first ones aren't rewindable because the creeper would interact earlier if it came from further away.

Alright here's some new stuff.

C/7 partial. I'll probably use the frontend as something for ikpx2 to start with next time I use it. It lasts nearly 4 periods, so I think its worth extending.

Code: Select all

x = 13, y = 29, rule = B3/S13

Also ikpx2-related, here's a failed wickstretcher who's frontend collapses. Its not the only one you can find on Catagolue, but this proves that a stretcher for this wick is absolutely possible, considering the backend is entirely stable.

Code: Select all

x = 0, y = 0, rule = B3/S13

$o4bobo4bo$5bobo$4bo3bo$4bo3bo$obob2ob2obobo!
Finally, you can stabilize part of this p18 oscillator between two pairs of dominoes to make something shuttle-esque.

Code: Select all

x = 15, y = 10, rule = B3/S13
7b3o$6bob2o$o4b2o7bo$o13bo$6b2o2bo$6b2o2bo$o13bo$o4b2o7bo$6bob2o$7b3o
!
I even found a couple ways to stabilize two of them together, creating a slightly unique reaction. There are probably more unique ways to combine these shuttles, but probably nothing like a Gosper Gun analog.

Code: Select all

x = 26, y = 13, rule = B3/S13

I could've chose a better username, but oh well.

Currently working to improve Life's guns and work on updating SKOPs and Isotropic rules most similar to B3/S23 to Life standards. Will get software to begin searches eventually.

I've seen people here come up with goals for their rules, so might as well do the same with this rule.
  • Build a spaceship reflector
  • Discover new high-period oscillators (p8 or more)
  • Find new still life catalysts
  • Discover a "methuselah" that lasts 100 generations
And last, but certainly not least, the long term goal:
  • Create a spaceship gun, preferably for the Creeper
This post will will be updated with time.

Besides number 5, these aren't goals aren't arbitrary. They're what I think could unlock new technologies or more efficient versions of the same technology. Of course, finding a spaceship gun is a given, but that's why I put it in long-term, because we'll probably rely on some other technologies to make it. Although for me at least, discovering a spaceship gun does feel like its on the verge of being feasible and not feasible.

I would start with rules 2 and 4, but you're free to try your hand at any of the first five.

Well, goal 3 got completed pretty fast.

I found that with the right stream of Creepers you can make a sawtooth-like population growth. Of course, you'd need an infinite supply of Creepers in a finite space to actually make a sawtooth out of this, but we don't have that yet.

Also, now we've got a bunch more linear growth patterns on Catagolue!

I believe this is what they call the "pointless optimization game", so I'm instead gonna focus on searching for higher-period (p6 and p8) sparkers with rlifesrc. I'll update this post if I make any findings.

(Apparently I forgot to turn off ikpx2 before making this post, so the catagolue listing of that wickstretcher will be pretty hard to find. Also, there might be even smaller linear growth patterns now.)

UPDATE 1:

No complete sparkers yet, but here are two p6 partials.

I've been using RLifesrc to try finding some more unique sparkers, its been largely unsuccessful.

Here's a large partial of a p6 that goes on to spark a line of three, along with the relevant evolution sequence.

Code: Select all

x = 31, y = 15, rule = B3/S13

o$6b2o6bo2bobo2bo6b2o$8b2o2b2obobobobob2o2b2o$9bobo13bobo!
And here's an early partial for a p8 obo sparker.

Code: Select all

x = 19, y = 10, rule = B3/S13

UPDATE: Longer-lasting partial, so the mechanism does work. I changed the period to 7 for my search though.

Code: Select all

Batch of new discoveries and/or observations

Two-Creeper collision in which one Creeper is unharmed. I found this while looking through some catagolue soups.

Some interesting oscillators I've never seen before, found from a D4_x4 search.

Oh, could that be why my sparker searches have been unsuccessful? I've had then set to random this whole time. Or maybe the period of 7 is a bit too high, even though it looks like that's what the oscillator needs to produce the spark.

Here's the most recent search I've tried doing and some of its partials. The ultimate goal is finding a two-dot sparker.

Batch of new discoveries/observations.

While searching for c/5 spaceships, I came across a new wickstretcher speed!

Code: Select all

x = 0, y = 0, rule = B3/S13
2o13b2o$b4o7b4o$5bo5bo$4bobo3bobo$5bobobobo2$5bobobobo$5b2o3b2o$4b

o$4b2o5b2o$4b2o5b2o$6b2ob2o2$4bo7bo$3bo9bo!
https://catagolue.hatsya.com/object/yl5 ... d066/b3s13

Interestingly, the stretcher never actually makes contact with the wick, it just influences how many neighbors the cells have. And if your wondering, I did not get any unique spaceship results from my search. I did stumble across some good partials, but I didn't save them.

On the topic of linear growth, there's an extendable still life involving tubs being stabilized at the corners.

Code: Select all

x = 17, y = 17, rule = B3/S13
4bo$5bo$7bo$5bobo$o4bo$bob2obo$5bobo$2b2o2bobo$7bobo$8bobo2b2o$9bobo$
10bob2obo$11bo4bo$9bobo$9bo$11bo$12bo!
We already have some large diagonally-moving ships, so... tubstretcher anyone? I tried just putting one half of the still life into ikpx2 and seeing if it would, intentionally or not, find a tubstretcher, but that didn't work out.

I've been looking at spaceship reactions with a pair of p18 oscillators, and here are a few I've found where the oscillators aren't destroyed, but the spaceships are.

Code: Select all

x = 97, y = 24, rule = B3/S13
77b2o$22b2o20b2o$19bobo2bobo47b3o$19b3o2b3o14b3o31bo$22b2o18bo49bo$17b

o2bo$57bo3bo28bo2bo2bo$3o54bo3bo32b2o$3b2o56b2o31bo$3o88bo2b2o$58bo2b
o29b2o$58bobo31bo$83b2o$22b2o26b2o27b2o6b2o$18b2o6b2o18b2o6b2o22b2o8b
2o$17b2o8b2o54b2o$22b2o22bo8bo24b3o2b3o$19b3o2b3o20bob4obo25bobo2bobo
$19bobo2bobo22bo2bo30b2o$22b2o!
Being the only large high-period oscillator we currently know of, this is probably our best shot at making a spaceship reflector or near-reusable reflector: Have the p18 (or multiple), along with other objects (be it still lifes or different oscillators) to stabilize the reaction or help make the reflection work. Its not very feasible to attempt at this point in time, though, since it would just be placing these in random positions and hoping for the best.

Lastly, I've been looking for small Sidewinder predecessors in Catagolue soups, and here are some of the smallest.

Code: Select all

x = 23, y = 5, rule = B3/S13
obo7b2o9bo$4bo6bo7bobo$bo2bo7bo5bo2bo$bo3bo5bo$4bo8b2o6b2o!
Yeah, none of those look pretty helpful. But its a start.

There were actually some of these vertical domino puffers already in Catagolue, it just didn't occur to me (or anyone else it seems) that a growing spaceship could be made out of that.

Nevertheless, this will be a great addition to the upcoming stamp collection.

That's literally the exact same one as I posted.

My bad, from how you phrased it I thought you had discovered a new domino puffer.

Not what I had in mind, but I guess our chances of finding a new, interesting high-period oscillator are becoming slim, so i might as well mark that goal as complete if I don't find any new oscillators a couple weeks from now.

I noticed that one of R2INT's c/5s was actually just a double wickstretcher attached to a couple of wickeaters, so I made another growing spaceship out of the c/3 stretcher:

When I said "new", I meant that it hadn't been posted anywhere on the forums, so I didn't know that anyone had seen it before.
