I don't think it would be possible at any period. A thumb capable of supplying the spark would have to not interfere with the block, and that doesn't seem to be possible.

I feel like I might have seen it somewhere, but maybe I'm just thinking of the thingy used in open-tracked quetzals.

EDIT: it's in the smallest p13-assisted period-52 glider gun. It's funny how things work out.
Helloshe, I like pentadecathlons and small-period motifs.
I may not be very skilled in search programs, but I have many ideas.

That's a variant of p4 syringe -- the sparker is one column thinner in your variant, so it might come in handy in some cases.

I see. I had seen the P4 syringe page, but thought it referred to this variant of the original syringe that uses a sparker to emit an extra glider, as opposed to an entirely different glider to herschel converter.

p16 180-degree reflector (2hd):

Code: Select all

x = 22, y = 23, rule = B3/S23

$3b3o4bo3$10b2o$10b2o8bo$19bobo$20bo!
The Charity's p16 can probably be replaced with some other sparkers for other periods. If we could find an eater 1 type catalyst that takes 9 generations or more to recover, then we would get a new stable reflector (StateInvestigator example so show what I mean):

Code: Select all

x = 14, y = 23, rule = StateInvestigator

It produces a pre-banana spark that can be used to generate an additional glider with a domino or duoplet (Karel's p15 shown, though this would be period 240):
