In the pattern I simply combined the shortest glider emitter recipe with the elbow destroy recipe, but this means that the glider is shot very early compared to the end of the full recipe. That's why the SW turners are very far away compared to the already far away Snarks, I had to somehow demonstrate how the entire tape is let through first. They need to be closer, in order to reduce construction cost.
"Elbow-destroying" 90-degree single-channel recipes are definitely available somewhere or other. I thought I remembered a big list of them being posted at some point early on in the development of the single-channel library that slsparse uses. If I remember right, I replied and said that elbow-preserving recipes were going to be more generally useful... but I might not be remembering right.

So far the only relevant post that I can find of an "elbow-destroying" recipe where the last glider in the recipe triggers the output glider, is this one -- but that's a difficult 180-degree output. A clean 90-degree output should be within easy reach of a short enumeration -- I'd expect just some high single-digit number of gliders.

Several spaceship ideas:

Code: Select all

x = 14, y = 15, rule = B/S012345678
2o$o11b2o$2bo9b2o$3bo7bo$4bo5bo$5bo3bo$8bo$6b2o$6b2o$5bo$4bo$3bo$2bo$
2o$2o!
The middle region is a reaction traveling through a reburnable fuse, that moves slightly as it's traveled. The end regions are reactions that flip it backwards, and are repeatable and slightly moved.

Code: Select all

x = 17, y = 17, rule = B/S012345678
15b2o$16bo$14bo$13bo$12bo$6b2o$6b2ob2o$5bo3b2o$4bo3bo$3bo3bo2b2o$2bo3b
o3b2o$bo3bo3bo$4bo3bo$3bo3bo$6bo$2o3bo$2o!
This growing spaceship consists of several rakes extending an arm backwards, like a reverse slide gun.

Code: Select all

x = 3, y = 22, rule = B/S012345678
3o$3o3$obo2$obo3$bo3$3o$3o3$bo$bo$bo2$obo$bo!
It doesn't move, it teleports, like a geminoid. It's a spark that dies out, but in the process, produces a predecessor for itself slightly moved. It's not a geminoid, the child doesn't kill the parent, the parent dies out on its own. Could be used to perturb other objects.
I was born on march 23 (3/23). I was destined to be here, and here i am.

Is there a pattern that moves like langtons ant? It should start in an empty medium. It should not be as pretty as the OTCA metapixel. Using a simple still life is sufficient. Is this possible?

Not with a simple still life, since then there's no way for movement to happen. But there is a non-Conway's-Life rule in which something very simple behaves like Langton's Ant:

Code: Select all

x = 4, y = 2, rule = B3-cjkq4knqy5cnr7/S02-cn3-ak4eiq5kq6e7e
o2bo$3o!
This means that we could program 0E0P metacells to emulate this rule, and get Langton's Ant behavior in Life, at least up to a point.

It's only "up to a point" because, well, multi-ant behavior isn't exactly well-defined anyway, but it definitely doesn't work in any standard way in this Langton's Ant emulator rule.

As I mentioned on Discord, there are definitely moderate-length recipes out there that will shoot a sideways glider triggered by the very last glider in the recipe.

I'm getting closer to digging out the source of my memory of a big pile of these "elbow-destroying" 90-degree glider recipes. It was probably in a post by chris_c, not by simeks, and it was probably for some construction toolkit like the 10hd or 9hd or 0hd toolkit, not the standard single-channel one ... so not really helpful to you:
dvgrn wrote: January 6th, 2016, 1:53 amAlso, for one of the toolkits chris_c was able to collect a very large pile of elbow-destroying glider outputs.
However, you could probably get slsparse to build you a fairly reasonable-price recipe that would match the requirements (last glider triggers the clean sideways glider). Try getting it to compile you a 0-degree recipe for the cheapest-looking OTT that you can find -- a boat or two blocks in the right place relative to the single-channel lane. You'll still have to send the elbow-destroy recipe after the OTT is constructed, but now it's the 0-degree elbow that has to be destroyed, so the trigger glider will be after those gliders instead of before it.

Sorry I was a bit inaccurate. I meant a pattern that moves and emits a still life (no need to fill full pixels). But if this particular still life is already there it should destroy it. So sometimes behaving like a puffer and sometimes like an eraser.

It's always theoretically possible that a smallish CGoL pattern exists that emulates Langton's Ant, just as the B-heptomino-like thing does in B3-cjkq4knqy5cnr7/S02-cn3-ak4eiq5kq6e7e. But unless it's _very_ small it's really not findable with current search tools.

We could engineer a simplest-possible Langton's Ant simulator using known technology. But if the emulated ant pattern has to start in an empty universe, it will have to be somewhat painfully large, due to the high overhead of basic self-construct and self-destruct mechanisms in B3/S23.

Here's a thread where a similar question came up. If we're allowed to fill the universe with a background pattern, then the problem gets very much simpler.

Or maybe a little simpler... Is there a pattern that almost does this thing but without the left and right turning? So it moves in a straight line and toggles the presence of still lifes that are positioned in a certain frequency in its track.

Had someone ever constructed a (reusable) W110 metacell in Life to once again prove Life Turing complete?
It would be relatively simple, but I couldn't find any in the forums.

Construct a version of the 0E0P metacell that can simulate B0 rules without S8 (by simulating alternate rules on alternate generations, much like how Golly simulates B0 rules using QuickLife)

That’s theoretically possible, but it needs to fit into a roughly 1000x1000 bounding box, which is over three orders of magnitude larger than the smallest self-constructing spaceship’s bounding box.

You can probably make an oscillator that fits your criteria with a p256 gun and about a thousand CC Semi-snarks, but there is almost certainly no way to encode a universal construction recipe in that way, so your challenge is impossible with current technology (and likely future technology as well).

This old pattern in jslife almost meets the criteria.

Code: Select all

#C This demonstrates a way of doubling the period of rakes whose
#C period is a multiple of 24. The technique involves an incoming
#C glider that toggles the phase of a p24 spaceship. The period-
#C doublers can be chained, thus increasing the period exponentially.
#C This example is period 768 and uses five period doubling units.
#C An extra LWSS is inserted a the back to delete the final output
#C glider to make a spaceship.

Assuming my calculations are right:

The pattern has a height of 54 and a width of about 66 + 45 * N, where N is the number of period doubling units. The area of the bounding box is therefore about 3564 + 2430 * N and the period is 24 * 2^N.

The short centillion is 10^303, which is about 2^1006.

So for N about 1002, the pattern has a large enough period. It has a width of 45156 cells, with an area of 2438424 cells.

So the pattern only misses by less than a factor of three in the area.

Is it possible to make a "square geminioid" that shrinks the bounding box by delaying the destruction of constructors (which would function as reflector after construction and before destruction)?
It would somewhat look like this:

Code: Select all

x = 17, y = 20, rule = B3/S23

Geminoids have generally had signal streams that travel diagonally (because they're made out of gliders). Your picture looks like an Orthogonoid, which is maybe a type of geminoid but I'm not entirely sure. I think orthogonal signal streams do work a lot better than diagonal ones, because we don't have the libraries yet to do 90-degree bends in an orthogonal construction arm.

I did some design work on a "square Orthogonoid" way back when. There seems to be some unavoidable complexity having to do with the large number of signal crossings at the edges. There could maybe be a good trick that I missed somewhere in there, though.

It's by no means an unsolvable amount of complexity. You could basically just compile a full standard recipe, and then start running it through the circuitry one bit at a time, trying bigger and bigger offsets and appending the first offset that worked. But I was never motivated enough to actually write the script to compile one of these things.

By geminoids, I mean geminoids of any displacement including diagonal and orthogonal or perhaps knightwise if we can make a Sir Robin splitter.

I mean, a Geminoid can perfectly well move knightwise without being made using signal streams that move knightwise. By any reasonable definition the original Geminoid was the Gemini spaceship, which moves knightwise.

I mean, the original original moved ibiswise, but it was really trivial to adjust it to move camelwise and knightwise.
