That sparking eater can be found in Golly's collection under "Patterns/Life/Still-Lifes/1998-eater-stamp-collection.rle".

Fairly strong spark with good clearance, it can reflect gliders at least:

Code: Select all

x = 69, y = 79, rule = LifeHistory

It is derived from a h-to-g, where there is an extra still-life stabilize the spark and emits a glider; instead, one can use a block bait in a similar location to stabilize the spark, and get that same glider back (works with that Xor-block factory):

Might as well put the banana spark to beehive here, although the beehive is not technically a signal, along with the corollary beehive spin found by ElijahKen (equivalent to the loaf spin in Baker's dozen but with better clearance), which can convert another spark into a glider:

Code: Select all

x = 32, y = 8, rule = B3/S23

If you replace the eater1 with an eater2 and add a block, you almost get a p21 oscillator:

Code: Select all

x = 17, y = 12, rule = B3/S23

[[ STOP 18 ]]
That implies that the combination of the beehive, two blocks and eater 2 has some niche uses as a catalyst, as a 'beehive spin', if you will:

Code: Select all

x = 17, y = 15, rule = B3/S23

$b3ob2o$3bobo$3bobo$4bo!
...
As a matter of fact, this catalyst is equivalent to the loaf spin reaction in Baker's dozen, but is much cheaper and has higher clearance, at the cost of a higher recovery time:

Code: Select all

x = 40, y = 21, rule = B3/S23
35bo$34bobo$34bobo$33b2ob3o$39bo$33b2ob3o$33b2obo$4bo20bo$4bo20bo4bo$

EDIT: The banana spark to beehive is apparently a rediscovery:

i suggest that people search for transparent reactions which receive the "massively edgy spark", which can be formed like this, among many other ways

Code: Select all

x = 16, y = 13, rule = B3/S23
2o$b2o$2o2b2o$o3b2o3$14b2o$14b2o2$b2o$bo$2bo$b2o!
edit: i also suggest finding transparent reactions with this spark-this isn't its most common predecessor, i just too the smallest predecessor i could find. it definitely is common tho

Code: Select all

x = 3, y = 4, rule = B3/S23
3o$2bo$b2o$bo!
? to long boat, ? to blinker (the spark is pretty common)

Code: Select all

there's a stable catalyst which works here but i can't find it Since my barrister isn't set up yet :(

2o$o$2bob2o$b2obo$2bo3bo$bo2bob3o$b4o4bo$6b3o$3b2obo$3bobo!
then there's this which probably has a periodic solution, just LLS it

without any search program the best thing i could do is look for possible starts, here's one (r-pentomino):

i'll look for more boat starts and other still lives (i've already checked block to no avail; going to check all the Eonian still lifes later. that's everything more common than the fishhook, which is: beehive, loaf, ship, tub, pond, long boat, ship-tie, barge, half-bakery, mango. god i wish i had gencols)
edit:
i got bored of the boat so i moved to the cooler tub
moves the block by 1 cell and makes a temporary boat with tail (i forgot which orientation it was named) as well as a lom, lol if the block was transparent this would sure be one heck of a lucky reaction

ElijahKen probably means that the bottom one allows the honey farm to be perturbed by other catalysts to potentially make something useful. For example, here is a banana spark to pond I just found by perturbing the honey farm with known catalysts:

Code: Select all

x = 22, y = 35, rule = B3/S23
20bo$18b3o$17bo$17b2o7$14b2o$13bo2bo$14bobo$15bo7$11b2o$11b2o3bo$14b2o
$6b2o$5bo2bo$6b2o2$16b2o$16bo$9b2o6b3o$4b2o3bo9bo$3bobo4b3o$b3obobo4b
o$o5b2o$2o!
Connected with the 'massively edgy spark' from modifying BFx59H:

Code: Select all

x = 39, y = 35, rule = B3/S23
20bo$18b3o$17bo$17b2o7$14b2o$13bo2bo19b2o$14bobo19bo$15bo21bo$36b2o2$
23b2o$23b2o3$11b2o20b2o3bo$11b2o20b2o2b2o$36b2o$6b2o29b2o$5bo2bo$6b2o
2$16b2o$16bo$9b2o6b3o$4b2o3bo9bo$3bobo4b3o$b3obobo4bo$o5b2o$2o!
Unfortunately this particular pond factory has extremely low clearance, and so may only be used to peturb or stop gliders like the beehive stopper in some way. However, it does show the potential of this honey farm explosion to create more useful objects like a glider or Herschel.
Currently writing a utility in Lua that may be helpful for faster manual pattern manipulation.

You can use a factory to restore one of the bait objects - here's a stupidly large proof-of-concept MES to Herschel converter, RT 940:
