Related to this, it's entirely possible to connect the p32 B hassler's periodic "L32" conduit to a standard Herschel conduit (L112) to create a p72 oscillator (easily adjustable to p96, p144 and p288):

I remember noticing that the version before reduction allowed replacing an eater 1 with an eater 2 so that the glider from the block-and-glider sequence would be harmlessly absorbed, but I no longer remember what it was. It doesn't seem to be possible to do the same in the reduced version anymore.

Looks like that could be used, with some difficulty, to carry p3-aligned signals orthogonally with unsimplified speed 10c/20, with signals carried by "B-heptomino and glider" pulses.

Unfortunately, the orthogonal standard spaceships (LWSS, MWSS, HWSS) can solve the same problem, with much less difficulty, and without restrictions on the timing other than repeat time of the circuit.

As you could probably tell, this is just the sidewinder, but with the XWSSes at the front replaced with rows of P3 sparkers.

It seems to be much more interesting as a spaceship, in that context there is no expectation of immediate "utility" or "usefulness":

Code: Select all

#C https://conwaylife.com/wiki/Sidewinder
x = 12, y = 18, rule = B3/S23
8b4o$7bo3bo$11bo$7bo2bo3$2o5b2o$3bo3bobo$obo6bo$bo5b3o5$8b4o$7bo3bo$
11bo$7bo2bo!
#C [[ ZOOM 10 GRID TRACKLOOP 20 10/20 0/2 ]]
It might become an interesting extensible oscillator (with rows of sparkers) if there is a small periodic source of "B+glider"s and a small eater. With p3 sparkers, I think it could work at periods 27+3n (n >= 0).

There _is_ prior art for that, but it probably hasn't been publicized enough on the forums. It came up in 2023 on Discord:
EvinZL — 6/19/23, 7:45 AM
I accidentally flipped the beehive and eater in the hotcrystal0 reflector:

Code: Select all

x = 25, y = 25, rule = B3/S23

however, this has the same mod-8 timing as the snark, so it's probably not too useful. EDIT by dvgrn: it's actually +4 mod 8 relative to the Snark, so potentially very useful -- see below.

Anivec — 6/19/23, 9:08 AM
It’s still edgy enough to be useful

dvgrn — 6/19/23, 11:56 AM
It's only the same mod-4 timing as the Snark, anyway -- it works out to 4 mod 8.

Eh, something is misleading to me, the mod-4 timing is indeed the same, but the mod-8 timing is different, snark is 4 and this is 0 (aka, -4 and -88)... so that's quite useful no? unless there is a delaying trick that am not considering, I mean, if you have a trombone like 2 snark 180 degree reflector, can shift it by 1, the delay is 8, am I missing something obvious?

Also, it is a transparent lane, so fun stuff happens (-203, -219, 5 mod 8 both, but CC):

Absolutely right. I've amended the Discord quote to make that clearer.

The original statement was that it had "the same mod-8 timing as the snark, so it's probably not too useful" ... which was why I posted that correction saying that it's 4 mod 8 (not 0 mod 8).

Having the option of getting +4 mod 8 by swapping in one of these reflectors for a Snark can potentially be very useful indeed. It would be nice if it was a stable reflector instead of a p4 one, of course, but we'll take what we can get!

I found the LWSS-to-B by trial and error.
Unfortunately, there are no known stable conduits that can accept a B-heptomino with a 46-tick repeat time, so RT 92 is the best possible.

I do remember a mention of this spark to glider bumper reaction before, but I forgot where.
