Can you turn this StateInvestigator pattern into regular Life by making a p8 catalyst instead of using state 5 cells?

Re: Oscillator Discussion Thread

Post by Sokwe »

I have confirmed with LLS that mazing and mold are the only p4 oscillators up to 17 bits. The way I did it was less efficient than it should have been, so I will first describe what I did and then describe how it could be done (probably just slightly) better.

For this search I used the filters branch of my LLS fork. For the purpose of this search I added the following options to the filters branch:
  • --cell_history X,Y HISTORY GENS: this sets the ON/OFF pattern of a particular cell. The pattern is determined by writing the number given for HISTORY in binary, associating the bits to the cells generation. For example, 3 in binary is 0011, which has least significant bit equal to 1, meaning generation 0 of the given cell is ON, and the overall pattern is ON, ON, OFF, OFF. The GENS variable simply tells LLS how many bits to read from HISTORY. For this p4 search, we want to read 4 bits, one for each generation. This just makes it easier to split up the search so that it can be run across multiple computers and CPUs.
  • --filter_small_objects: this filters out blinkers, tubs, and boats that do not interact with any other part of a solution. This only works at p4, and it turns out to not really be necessary, as there is a better way to solve this problem in this case by changing the filter files and running a few quick extra searches. This is where the inefficiency mentioned above comes from.
Here are the setup and output files:
p4_pop17.zip
(69.68 KiB) Downloaded 30 times
All searches were run from p4_pop17_base.jdf, with the --cell_history option used to split up the search. The green cells of p4_pop17_base.jdf are p2, and the center cell (at position (27,27)) represents the first p4 cell in the sense that it maximizes x - y among all p4 cells that maximize x + y (similar to the p5 setup described here). I split the search primarily based on the cell history of this center cell. Notice that history values of 00 and 15 correspond to stator cells, while 05 and 10 correspond to p2 cells, so these are skipped. For history values 02, 03, 06, 07, 09, 11, 12, 13, and 14, I used the following command:

Code: Select all

./lls p4_pop17_base.jdf --cell_history 27,27 NN 4 --filter_small_objects --filters p4_filters.txt --force_determined --solver cadical -n -p '<=17' -j p4_pop17_solutions > out_p4_pop17_NN.txt
where "NN" is replaced by the history value. Prior to running the pop-17 search, I had run the pop-15 search as a test, and history values 01, 04, and 08 took the longest, so I split each of these up based on For history values 01, 04, and 08, I further split up the search based on the history of the cell at coordinates (27,28). The commands in these cases looked like the following:

Code: Select all

./lls p4_pop18_base.jdf --cell_history 27,27 NN 4 --cell_history 28,27 MM 4 --filter_small_objects --filters p4_filters.txt --force_determined --solver cadical -n -p '<=17' -j p4_pop17_solutions > out_p4_pop17_NN_MM.txt
Where "NN" was either 01, 04, or 08, and MM ranged from 00 to 15.

Notice that the above searches use the filter files listed in filters.txt. These are just .jdf files containing all orientations and starting phases of mazing and mold with just enough cells to guarantee that they can't interact with anything (I don't want to filter mazing or mold when the do interact with something, as that would give a different oscillator). Unfortunately, in order to guarantee that they can't interact with anything, I had to set some cells OFF in the filter, but one could place a blinker, tub or boat close to the mold or mazing such that they overlap these OFF cells but still don't interact. That's why I thought I needed the --filter_small_objects option, but it was ultimately unnecessary.

What I should have done was to enumerate the cases where a pattern could interact with mold or mazing at the location of these problem OFF cells in the filter files. There are only 3 types of interaction to check, each with 4 different starting phases (so 12 searches in total). It turns out none of these searches takes more than 5 minutes to return unsat even up to population 20. With those searches completed, the problem OFF cells can be removed from the filter files. This allows LLS to detect when it has found a noninteracting mold or mazing earlier than it would have with --filter_small_objects, which forces it to wait until it detects the blinker, tub, or boat next to the mold or mazing. Below I have attached a zip archive containing the .jdf inputs for the 12 searches that need to be run, as well as example corrected filter files for mazing and mold (one example file each; the rest can be reconstructed by proper use of JLS keyboard shortcuts):
p4_minpop_fixed_filters.zip
(26.25 KiB) Downloaded 30 times
I do not intend to run the pop-18 p4 search. If anyone wants to do so, they would need to reconstruct the filter files for mazing and mold as described in the previous paragraph, as well as construct filter files for all orientations of monogram and both variants of mold on table. Since the longest part of the pop-17 search took over 7 days (and several others were not much less), it would probably make sense to split the search even more and use more computing resources than I currently have available.

Edit: here is the naive pseudo-oscillator connectability analysis for mold and mazing:

Code: Select all

x = 70, y = 29, rule = LifeHistory

15.5D15.2DA2D15.2DA2D$23.5D15.5D15.4D$44.3D!
It should be fairly clear that mazing could only possibly form pseudo-oscillators with other p4 oscillators (it actually can't form any), while the rotor cells of mold can likewise only form a pseudo-interaction with another p4. Thus, all p4 pseudo-objects up to 21 cells must involve still lifes or p2 oscillators adjacent to the loaf in mold. Mark Niemiec lists such pseudo-oscillators here. I found it easy enough to check that these lists are complete up to 19 cells simply by visual inspection while knowing the list of still lifes and p2 oscillators up to 7 cells. I wouldn't be surprised if they are complete up to higher cell counts, but I didn't bother checking.

From the Execution of Old Guns thread, here is a p44 dependent loop I constructed. I don't know if it has actually been discovered before (I would presume it has, but it's not on the dependent reflectors page on the wiki in any case)

Currently working to improve Life's guns and work on updating SKOPs and Isotropic rules most similar to B3/S23 to Life standards. Will get software to begin searches eventually.

Here is a p76 R-pentomino hassler. I found everything except the way to remove the blinkers, which was iNoMed. Because the blinkers are removed by figure eights, it's p152 overall, although there is most likely a way to weld the existing p4 corner dot sparker to a blinker deleter to make it actually p76.

The way I'm finding these recently is via this, where the ship turns into a block, with various ship placements. Any "block corner" works for this. The catalyst is only considered to fail if the yellow cell dies. I've already done this with the pi-heptomino and the honey farm (including AK-47 for gun potential) a few months ago, then took a break because I had real life work.

Would this be useful for phase-shifting blinkers in partials? (Based on a glider to block) The minimum repeat time is 28:

Code: Select all

x = 25, y = 22, rule = B3/S23

this pi-to-G emits a glider while phase shifting a blinker

a good-enough-clearance G-to-pi could definitely work for creating odd-period loops of some minimum repeat time

Currently working to improve Life's guns and work on updating SKOPs and Isotropic rules most similar to B3/S23 to Life standards. Will get software to begin searches eventually.
