Generally you wouldn't want to run this as a flipper search, because that's essentially like running a p8 search. You instead want to reduce the period to 4 by using JLS subperiodic cells. The best way to run a search like this is by setting up the search in JLS and running it with LLS. Here is an example of such a search setup for a p57 oscillator.

In this case it's probably also possible to solve this purely in JLS. You need to set up a full p8 search with the p8 rotor as shown. Then set the cells near (but not at) the interaction site to have period 4 by selecting them and pressing '4' on your keyboard. Put 2-cell thick p1 borders around the p4 area, and surround those with unchecked cells. Make sure that there are still some p8 cells around the reaction site. If you bring the p4 cells too close there won't be any solutions.

I just completed a series of LLS searches to find all p5 oscillators up to 15 cells. The search found pseudo-barberpole in all four orientations and nothing else.

The JLS status file representing the base of the search is attached below:
p5_setup.zip
(1.99 KiB) Downloaded 20 times
The green cells are p1 (not p2 as you might expect if you're familiar with the JLS defaults), and the center cell represents the first p5 cell in the sense that it maximizes x - y among all p5 cells that maximize x + y. I split the search into 30 parts corresponding to the 30 possible p5 cell histories for the first p5 cell. The shortest of these searches took 4 hours, while the longest took 8 days.

For this search, I also modified LLS slightly by adding a line reading

Code: Select all

determined = True
directly below the line reading

Code: Select all

determined = search_pattern.deterministic()
This causes LLS to find multiple solutions only if those solutions differ in generation 0. The purpose of this is to prevent LLS form considering pseudo-barberpole with different junk at the unchecked edges in generations 1 to 4 as different patterns. This would not be sufficient for a 16-cell search, as it would still consider pseudo-barberpole with one on cell in various locations along the unchecked edge in different positions in generation 0 to be different patterns. This could be accounted for by filtering any solutions containing pseudo-barberpole, but that would require more changes to LLS.

Resu wrote: October 4th, 2025, 3:59 pm How long does a search like this take?
I split the search into 30 pieces that took varying lengths of time. I was able to 16 simultaneously thanks to a recent boon in computing resources. I think the most meaningful measure of the time taken is the time it took to finish the most difficult piece. This was about 8 days for the piece where the first p5 cell has a cell history of OFF-OFF-OFF-OFF-ON. This is the cell history of the first p5 cell in both one orientation of the minimal phase of pseudo-barberpole, and one of the minimum phases of octagon 2, so I suspect it spent a lot of time working its way to finding pseudo-barberpole and then almost finding octagon 2 before being stopped by the population limit.

There were four other pieces that that took between 4.5 and 5.5 days. One of these corresponds to the other minimal phase of octagon 2, but it wasn't completely clear to me why the others might have taken a long time. It seemed that those with a starting p5 cell history that was mostly OFF tended to take longer than a starting p5 cell history that was mostly ON. Interestingly, the piece corresponding to OFF-ON-OFF-ON-ON finds two orientations of pseudo-barberpole, which I would expect to take a particularly long time, but the total search only took about 1 day, which was near the median.

For something like this, you should check the wiki page for Pi-heptomino hasslers. The p39 link in the table takes you to another page that has this oscillator on it. I suspect the supporting p3 oscillators in that example would meet your definition of "p3 toad-like oscillators".

I'm not sure what you mean by "fully stable at the contact point". The p3 examples on the wiki page and those given by C_R_116 above seem just as stable at the contact point as the toad itself.
