Re: Suggested LifeWiki edits

Post by dbell »

The 'Moving sawtooth' LifeWiki article is out of date.

Here are three record-breaking sawtooths created after the population 1239 one currently shown in the article:

A moving sawtooth with repeating population of 707 was created by user cloudy197 on 22 April 2011 using a bi-block puffer and a 2c/5 convoy to ignite the blocks.
viewtopic.php?f=2&t=652&p=4578&hilit=mo ... ooth#p4578

A moving sawtooth with repeating population of 624 was created by David Bell on 15 June 2024 using two diagonal period 96 Cordership backrakes receding symmetrically from each other while shooting each other.
viewtopic.php?f=2&t=6258#p187674

A moving sawtooth with repeating population of 584 was created by David Bell on 16 April 2025 using two diagonal period 96 Cordership backrakes receding symmetrically from each other while shooting each other.
viewtopic.php?f=2&t=6258#p210054

-----

The last two sawtooths are very similar, so perhaps it might be unnecessary to show the population 624 one, but only have its date and population mentioned.

I think that the population 707 sawtooth is worth showing since its mechanism is interesting and it held the record for so long. (If shown, it needs to be advanced to be at its minimum population.)

Maybe instead of showing them in this one article, they might have their own articles, such as 'Moving sawtooth 707', etc.

Currently working to improve Life's guns and work on updating SKOPs and Isotropic rules most similar to B3/S23 to Life standards. Will get software to begin searches eventually.

For the 'Space dust' Lifewiki article:

Ironically, a synthesis for the spider spaceship mentioned in the quote HAS been found. Several other spaceships containing some space dust have also been synthesized.

So small patches of space dust are not a barrier to synthesis that they were in the past. Larger patches are still difficult.

For the 'Quadratic sawtooth' LifeWiki article:

The repeating minimum population of this sawtooth is 3136 cells, reached at generations 246418, 62915218, ...
(There is a local minimum population of 3122 cells reached at generation 30, but that minimum value never recurs.)

Here is the appearance of the sawtooth at generation 246418.

Code: Select all

#C The quadratic sawtooth at its first repeating minimum population of 3136 cells.

-----------------

I am not totally sure about the minimum population. I couldn't run it another cycle since it used too much memory. But I did
compare the two instances at population 3136, and the components are all identical, except for the expected larger distances
to the spaceships. So hopefully that pattern would continue. Maybe someone could verify that.

The pattern should probably be advanced 30 generations to show the first local minimum (with the generation numbers adjusted).

Alternatively the pattern could be shown at the true minimum as shown above, but then it would be too large to fit in the viewer.

EDIT:

Perhaps the following adjustment to the sawtooth is worth showing.

It was created by taking the population 3136 object shown above and shifting the Corderships and 2c/5 ships inwards by the largest multiple of 480 generations that fits.

The result is a sawtooth that has no false minimums, and fits nicely in the Life Viewer.

Code: Select all

#C A quadratic sawtooth at its first repeating minimum population of 3136.
#C This is a small adjustment of the original sawtooth.
x = 2353, y = 2353

The period 18 glider gun on LifeWiki is the version produced by P1GG; however, in the next forum post after the referenced one, JP21 posts a 14-cell reduction of the gun. Would it be possible to update the Wiki to the optimized version? Thanks!

It would be nice to see some examples of the operations in the 'Signal-channel' and related LifeWiki pages.

I assume a snark-maker example is too large to show in the viewer, but simpler things would still be interesting to see. For example, the push, pull, glider output, and maybe the creation of a hand operations would be small enough to show.

Also, links to other pages which use single-channel constructions could be added (for example, 'Spiral Growth').

Oddly enough, the full Snarkmaker can be and is shown in LifeViewer in the Snarkmaker LifeWiki article. That was actually the original reason to add the special PASTET trick to LifeViewer -- see this viewerconfig line in the article:

Code: Select all

#C [[ PASTET 4000 ... ]]
It would be easy to animate a pull, a push, a glider output of each color, and a hand creation in the single-channel article, either using the same PASTET trick or (probably better) by including the complete RLE.

This seems like a great idea to me -- but rather than just do the editing myself, I'd much prefer to train someone who doesn't know how to set up these kinds of animations, but who would like to learn. Any takers?

In the 'Logarithmic growth' LifeWiki article:

It could be mentioned that the pattern by Summers and Nivasch is also a sawtooth with a repeating minimum population of 4496. The minimums are reached just before a full row of blinkers is created preceding every third block push.

Maybe the pattern could also be advanced by 625 generations so that it is shown at its first minimum population.

I don't see the point of having a wiki entry LifeWiki:April Fools'. While some people are posting jokes on April 1 every year, trying to catalogue them on the wiki misses the point of such single-day jokes, as well as missing the purpose/scope of the wiki. I suggest to delete the page.

Note also that there is already a Sandbox thread ( viewtopic.php?f=12&t=6926 ), and the Sandbox is probably the only place on this website where such an archive could fit reasonably well.

I noticed that the page isn't in mainspace, but that doesn't change the situation.

As far as namespaces go, it's worth noting that most or all of other pages in the same namespace are actually related to working on the encyclopedia: https://conwaylife.com/wiki/Special:Pre ... amespace=4

This page isn't related to improving the encyclopedia. Instead, it looks like a misguided attempt to "archive" something that wasn't supposed to be archived to begin with, doesn't really belong to the wiki (regardless of namespace), and doesn't contribute to existing knowledge about Life/CA or to understanding of notable topics in the scope or to improving the wiki's coverage of notable topics in the scope.

The blonker page is pretty barebones. There should be stuff about how it can be used as a sparker or catalyst, but I'm not sure what to add because it seems like it fails whenever I try to use it.

Could this waveguide be added to the wiki? It seems to be the first known diagonal waveguide, and the third known overall. I doubt that I was actually the first to discover it though, since it is so simple: /forums/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=2036&p=213987#p213949

In the "snake" LifeWiki article, some text could be added to say that a snake is the smallest object that can support the "boat-bit" reaction.

Here are several related suggested edits:

------------

In the "Gosper glider gun" LifeWiki article:

The original 13-glider synthesis could be shown since it is the first synthesis of a gun. (I don't want to have to log in to Scientific American to read the article containing it.)

The 8-glider synthesis could also be shown since it is the record holder for synthesizing a gun. (I shouldn't have to go to Catalogue to find it).

Finally, this is one of several similar final steps to synthesize a gun with 12 gliders. I don't know how close this is to the 13-glider synthesis. If the 13-glider one doesn't use ships, then this one could be shown too. Maybe this could be backtracked to show all the gliders.

Code: Select all

x = 36, y = 4
oo9boo9boo4bo$oo3boo4bobo8bobobbo6boo$6boo4boo9boobb3o4boo$5bo!
------------

In the "ship" LifeWiki article:

It could be mentioned that one of the reactions between a ship and a glider makes a clean queen bee, and this allows a simple method to synthesize a Gosper glider gun.

Code: Select all

x = 8, y = 3
oo4bo$obobbo$boobb3o!
------------

In the "Queen bee" LifeWiki article:

Within the "Formation" section, the above collision between a glider and a ship could be added.

It might be nice to add a new category of sawtooth to the LifeWiki.

This is the "anchored sawtooth", where some part of the sawtooth always remains within some bounding box. The oldest and the smallest sawtooths fall within this category, for example "Sawtooth 1212" and "Sawtooth 168".

The previous sawtooth category was the "Moving sawtooth", describing either of the newer "Expanding sawtooth" and "Sawtooth spaceship" sub-categories.

These types are distinguished by their behavior with respect to various bounding boxes.

Cis-barge with tail should mention that it can be struck by a glider to produce a pulsar in a very tight area, as in this reaction used in synthesis sometimes:

Code: Select all

x = 9, y = 8, rule = B3/S23
2o$b2o$o3bo$4b3o$7bo$6bobo$5bobo$6bo!
Here's an example if a citation is needed.

The command {{Small constructible periodic object}} says "All strict still lifes with a population of 22 or fewer cells, all oscillators with 16 or fewer cells, and all spaceships with 33 or fewer cells are known to be glider-constructible. A glider synthesis of this object can be found in the infobox to the right.", but spaceships up to 35 cells are known to be glider-constructible.

Tutorials/Glider syntheses states that transfer.py "will only attempt to synthesise objects that either already have a synthesis or are strict still lifes with 20 bits or less". However, as all strict still lifes up to 22 bits (likely to be 23 soon!) have been synthesised, is the second half unncecessary since all still lifes with 20 bits or less already have a synthesis?
