EDIT2: Just realized there is a small c/7 that can be easily found by qfind:
What number NRSS is that in this rule? It's really hard to keep track without labels

EDIT: Is C/3 diagonal possible for ships in this rule?
Currently working to improve Life's guns and work on updating SKOPs and Isotropic rules most similar to B3/S23 to Life standards. Will get software to begin searches eventually.

How do you make rules less explosive if they are only explosive along an axis?

Code: Select all

x = 31, y = 13, rule = C

Is there a specific rule which you need to 'defuse'? If so, please post it here.

I am not certain why some rules are explosive only along an axis, as I have not seen examples, but if there are infinite growth patterns which occur along an axis that cause explosions, just add or remove conditions to prevent them from functioning. If gutter symmetry is causing explosions, add conditions that break gutter symmetry.

I'm not sure if this goes here (these forums) or somewhere else, but here it is. So I was reading esolangs wiki yesterday, and came across the page on bully automata. Are there any examples of bully automata that have names/ruletables here?

Not really. Any (X)MO(Y) (SMOS, OMOS, etc...) has to have subparts of an X which behave like a Y. So, in this case, the p27 oscillator is not made of p34 oscillators, because each of the four quadrants doesn't reappear in 34 generations. If you have to split the parts of X apart to make them behave like a Y, it's not a (X)MO(Y). Otherwise, there isn't a way of separating non-trivial patterns from trivial examples like this "Still Life Made Of Spaceships":

Code: Select all

x = 5, y = 12, rule = B2-a/S12History

Why is it considered trivial? A still life made of spaceships seems quite interesting.

Well, the boring answer is because people in the past defined it as such. For example, what I'd call a trivial SMOS is one which doesn't satisfy the strict definition of a SMOS as described on the wiki:
SMOS Wiki Page wrote: A stricter definition of SMOS requires the spaceships used in the SMOS to be allowed to go through 1 full oscillation cycle before interacting with the other.
The more personal answer is that if the sub patterns never actually moves like a spaceship, I don't think the entire pattern is a spaceship made of spaceships. It's just a spaceship whose parts resemble other spaceships.

The same logic applies to OMOS, SMOI, a hypothetical SLMOS, and the rest.

Out of all isotropic rules with B3ai and no B01ce2ace, how many rules are explosive (by running 100 soups and see if anything touching the 5000*5000 border is larger than 100 cells), how many rules are stable (nothing touching the border)?

Billions, if not trillions, as just B34a/S23 is explosive, and you can add as many transitions as you want.

Code: Select all

x = 0, y = 0, rule = B34a/S23
!

I would only count ones that reach at least 10 thousand, otherwise ones with replicators such as highlife would be counted.

No, but I think "Flying Dutchman" (pl. Flying Dutchmen - this would refer to the whole set and not solely to any individual (5,2)c/190 ship or period-multiplied ship) has some precedence on the forums if it/the general (5,2)c/190 set were to be named.

Also this thread is the place for this sort of question.

EDIT: Both minimum phases. "(5,2)c/190 oblique ship" probably is most adequate as a current description.

How to prove that an isotropic rule with B2a, B2ce or B3ai has no spaceships?

(Note: negative results of spaceship findings can never be a proof, but one single spaceship found can be a disproof)

Give it all of s012-in3ajr4a, then the trailing end of a spaceship cannot die. For a specific rule, post it, and there may be proof. (eg. b1e2a/s cannot have spaceships)

There's the "Spaceships in Life-like cellular automata" project. You might need Cygwin for it, though. You'll also need Python to use the new-gliders.py script (which tells you which speeds are known and which aren't).

How do you find the maximum speed of spaceships in each rule?

Code: Select all

x = 31, y = 13, rule = C
8.2X2.3X.3X.X.X$8.X.X.X3.X3.X.X$8.X.X.3X.3X.X.X$8.2X2.X5.X.X.X$8.X.X.
3X.3X.3X$M2.M$4.M$M3.M$.4M$27.2M$27.M.M$29.M$29.2M! [[ AUTOSTART GPS 10 ]]
