Well, the boring answer is because people in the past defined it as such. For example, what I'd call a trivial SMOS is one which doesn't satisfy the strict definition of a
SMOS as described on the wiki:

The more personal answer is that if the sub patterns never actually moves like a spaceship, I don't think the entire pattern is a spaceship made of spaceships. It's just a spaceship whose parts resemble other spaceships.
The same logic applies to OMOS, SMOI, a hypothetical SLMOS, and the rest.
