This might be slightly out of date, I haven't checked everything -- but here's a post by Sokwe giving the status quo as of the beginning of February (or a little later). May still be current.

EDIT: No, not quite current -- the 34-bit list includes xq4_04eb776zy1cdeceeecz27deee6, which doesn't appear to be mentioned on any LifeWiki page, at least not by apgcode, but it does now have a synthesis.

So... good targets for synth research include the "MWSS top" form of Unnamed tagalong 23P4H2V0 (xq4_g808wsjo6chjo71zf8841) and the 34P5H2V0 and 35P4H1V1 spaceships mentioned by Hartmut Holzwart in mid-February.

Hello! My name is Andrew. I've been lurking and learning for about a month. Last night I submitted my first haul with apgsearch (pre-compiled Windows x86_64 version), but it has not appeared on my statistics page on Catagolue yet. I submitted another one this morning. Does it take some time? Thanks for your assistance! The output looks like it worked:

Code: Select all

Greetings, this is apgluxe v5.43-ll2.5.9, configured for b3s23/C1.

Lifelib version: ll2.5.9
Compiler version: 12-posix
Python version: '3.8.20 (default, Sep 27 2024, 06:05:08) [GCC 12.2.0]'

Welcome to the forums!

Did you enter your payosha256 key correctly? If not, then your hauls will not appear under your name.
Try submitting another haul with exactly 1234567 soups (ignore the fact it tells you the minimum is 10000000), and I might be able to find what the problem is.
If a haul with that number of soups shows up, but it is submitted by Anonymous, then it is probably a problem with your payosha256 key.

I submitted that 1234567 soups haul about an hour ago (4:35 PM EDT - 20:35 UTC). The one change I made was previously I had put quotes around my payosha25 key because of special characters. This time I left the quotes out. I'm submitting from the Windows 11 PowerShell command line:

Code: Select all

.\apgluxe-windows-x86_64.exe -n 1234567 -k <key_redacted> -p 4 -L 1 -i 1
Thanks!

EDIT: 9:00 PM EDT - I hope you don't mind, but I went ahead and created a second payosha25 key with the display name of "SharkNose". This seems to be working much better as I'm now appearing as verifier and contributor in recent hauls. :) If I can assist in discovering why my first key did not work, let me know!

Based on the wiki article description, and that I can make the superstring as wide as I want and it still seems to work, I'd say so. And assuming none are missing, that would also be only the third waveguide, first since 1997, and is diagonal.

According to the wiki, only two waveguides are known, and both are orthogonal, so therefore I can say fairly confidently (but not certainly) that it was first discovered on 30th June, 2025.
It seems so simple that it appears impossible that it would be unknown, but I think that the majority of Lifenthusiasts viewed waveguides as less interesting compared to other types of pattern, which is why nobody has discovered a new waveguide for 28 years (which is about half of CGOL's lifespan!).

A much more interesting waveguide would be one that is reusable. How would one search for that?

For rulemax, rulemin and number of Life-like CA/isotropic rules that is evolves identically of a pattern, see Catagolue. Otherwise, see LifeViewer.

Catagolue only displays the rulemax and rulemin, not the number of number of Life-like CA/isotropic rules that it evolves identically.

It was probably something to do with the fact that GOL is an acronym for Game Of Life. This is also where CataGOLue's name comes from.

I don't think this is a question well-suited for this forum thread, probably better to posit in the sandbox. However, I do think the question you recently posed in Advanced Questions is better suited for this thread.
Currently working to improve Life's guns and work on updating SKOPs and Isotropic rules most similar to B3/S23 to Life standards. Will get software to begin searches eventually.

Is this possible with CUDA?

I jumped into the deep end and installed WSL 2 on my Windows 10 machine and with some help from Copilot, managed to compile an executable with the --cuda option. Regular test runs without cuda were processing C1-B3/S23 soups at about 5K per second. With cuda, G1-B3/S23 soups leaped way up to 600K per second! Is that right? My video card is an nVidia GTX 1050 Ti.

I've been running in test mode so far. Any hints or advice before I start submitting G1-B3/S23 hauls to Catagolue? I was planning to use my usual SharkNose Payosha256 key.

Oh, and those colorful universe displays are neat. Can you point me to an explanation of what all the numbers mean?

Thanks in advance. :)

Wow, a 120x increase in speed seems very good! My GPU only leads to a 10-15x increase.

I would suggest that you ensure that your searching is fully optimised by closing down all additional programs so that apgsearch can use as much RAM as it needs.

Note that GPU searching works by only censusing soups that have a final period that is not a factor of 6, take a long time to settle, or reach the edge of the GPU’s simulated universe, so you are less likely to discover interesting still lifes (but it can still happen, some of my still life discoveries were in G1), but more likely to discover interesting oscillators, spaceships, and infinite growth patterns. You also want to have a large haul size - I typically use 1B soups for G1 hauls.

Good luck and happy searching! :)
Also, can you provide details about how you created the executable? I cannot figure out how.

Re: Thread for basic questions

PK22,

I pretty much followed the instructions in the README.md - "bash recompile.sh" and for the CUDA executable - "bash recompile.sh --cuda" makes a much larger executable. I hit a lot of obstacles before that. I had to get apgmera, lifelib, and cpads from GitLab (I got the zip files) and put them together. I got the normal executable at that point. When I tried the --cuda option, I had to install the nVidia nvcc cuda compilation tools first. Plus, I also installed the latest nVidia drivers in Windows 10, which I hadn't updated in years. There were some packages needed for WSL2, so I could compile even before that.

I did just get a G1 haul to Catagolue. I ran 10,000,000 soups this time just be cautious. I'll take your advice and run 1,000,000,000 next time. I think my 600k soups/per second was skewed by the fact that I ran a test of only 10,000 soups. My 10,000,000 soup haul averaged about 191k soups/second.
