Yes, you can do the collections.
I still want you to do the spaceships collections though. :)
Also, I think it is time to lay down some rules for what can be considered notable. Any of these things would be considered notable.
- An oscillator of a new period, smaller than the smallest known for that period, or that produces a moderately strong spark.
- A puffer that produces something that we don't have a puffer to produce yet.
- a gun, replicator, breeder of any kind, or sawtooth.
- A spaceship that isn't c/2.
- A glider or T synthesis for something that doesn't already have a glider or T synthesis with less or equal gliders or Ts.

for everyone who does ikpx2 or any other spaceship search program for this rule:
from now on, if you can, please do searches by minimum population, not by width or bounding box. Any symmetry is fine though. You can search in other ways, but this is the most helpful.

In my opinion, there is inconsistency between the stated goal "get people to post on this topic" and asking people to not do specific kinds of searches they might be legitimately interested in doing. Different people could explore the same topic in different ways, using different tools and methods. Using some tools could mean there's no way to do searches by minimum population at all due to the algorithms used. If this thread is intended to be a place for community exploration of the topic, that implies different people might share discoveries they found worthwhile searching for, possibly something that sets a record by some metric that isn't "popular". On the other hand, if the thread was intended more as someone's personal exploration of the topic, then it is possible that such a thread would fit better in the Sandbox.

You are absolutely right! I apologize, and I will modify that comment. But when I said 'get people to post on this topic' I meant like 50 posts, which we surpassed within a week. Also, I believe the second quote is a misunderstanding. I still want people to post oscillators, in fact I need people to post oscillators. I was talking about the 'collection' of oscillators that are in a post around a third of the way through page 2.

I don't see any immediately obvious way to put two together to make a puffer - I've tried several combinations - but the tagalong is suprisingly vulnerable. Further testing would be a good idea.

I note that some of these spaceships seem remarkably simple, so I think we should work on finding glider/T syntheses for more complex objects.
I'll search 5Glider_stdin today for a few hours. Best case, I find a simple gun that we missed or an easy to construct complex spaceship/puffer, and at the very least it will help in finding glider syntheses for more common objects.
If anyone wants to help, you need to use this script to generate RLEs,then use Tutorials/Catagolue stdin symmetry to send them to apgluxe.

Given that we can convert 2 Ts into a glider and 3? gliders into a T, is it better to have a universal standard for synthesis costs in this rule (if so, I suggest using gliders), or should synthesis costs be in terms of the total number of gliders+Ts?

There are actually many ways. Try putting them apart by a generation. Also, I believe we should do glider synthesis, and if it can only be produced using Ts or a combination, just count the number of gliders to make a T.

By using these to create extensible loops, you can produce an oscillator with any period 30+6n and 28+7n. I will add these to the oscillator collection later.
We could probably combine this and the boat turning glider mechanic to make a gun, by using the glider and T reaction to send the glider and T back, and sending out a T, and turning the glider with a boat, which is then turned by another glider, and turning the T with 2 of these objects.

If we want to build a universal constructor using this, then we want a glider constructible reflector. This one is, but I dislike its high period. I challenge someone to find a simple p8 (or lower period) that can provide a suitable dot or thumb. p8 is ideal as it will work well with HashLife, and I have no clue how many gliders/Ts would be needed to encode a recipe. There are p2 thumbs, but none are edgy enough.

I'll get to work on building a gun. We have every reaction we need, I just need to find a way to put it together.

EDIT: No glider reflector yet. I'm having trouble putting the gun together - the reactions reflect the Ts 180 degrees, making it hard to put reflectors to move them back.

Well, technically. I've tested with all of these, but currently we only have the boat-flipper, which would mean we need to do the reaction (glider and T to glider and two Ts) twice, once on each side of the boat. Also, the reaction changes the period of the Ts, which is helpful.

If the is a way to flip the boat using a still life, there could be a stable reflector.
