How to change python*.dll file in Golly

Post by danieldb »

I'm using python 2.6 which doesn't seem to work with the script I'm trying to run (apgsearch-2015-05-25)
Is there any way to change the python*.dll? I also can't seem to find the python*.dll in the folder.
Edit: found it, but don't know how to change it. I tried reinstalling, which didn't work.

If Golly is popping up a window asking you for a Python DLL location whenever you run a script, try copying and pasting in the exact full path and filename of the DLL that you found -- no asterisk.

If you've tried that and it still isn't working, make sure that you have downloaded and installed 32-bit Golly if you have 32-bit Python installed, or 64-bit Golly if you have 64-bit Python installed, as described in Golly's Help. A mismatch between 32-bit and 64-bit seems to be the most common reason for Python failing to work with Golly.

Welcome to the forums! Sorry if I didn't help with the python thing, but happens I'm still putting it to work in the notebook I just afforded and dvrgn already helped you... just that.

It's not that, but I used an incorrect file and I want to change it.

Rename it! Or Google for a substitute file.

I think this would solve your problem:
Go to GollyPrefs in...
Golly Help wrote:the user-specific data directory:
On Linux: ~/.golly/
On Mac OS X: ~/Library/Application Support/Golly/
On Windows: C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Golly\
(By the way, in my windows 8 it's C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Golly)
Open GollyPrefs with notepad or whatever and find the line with python_lib=some_dir\some_name.dll
Erase whatever dll file name on the right hand side and save. Golly would probably open a ask dialog when running a script next time.
Or change the right hand side to the dll file you want to use.

And a fair Warning: When you change GollyPrefs make sure you have all Golly instances shut down as closing a Golly instance rewrites the GollyPrefs file.
