The situation is a bit counterintuitive. On Catagolue, glider guns are stored "as if they were glider syntheses" (even though obviously a glider gun isn't a glider synthesis). Correct - Catagolue uses a modified version of the RLE format, with support for multiple cellstates / markup. I think it would be much better if Catagolue provided plain two-state RLE by default, and optionally allowed to get a multistate version.
One way to get a two-state RLE is to click on the LifeViewer window, and press "Alt+J" (convert to plain Life), "Ctrl+A" (select all), "Ctrl+C" (copy). Here is the result from my test, which is a plain two-state RLE:

This is known, though a P19 gun is not known. One could imagine what could be (somewhat plausible) ways to discover a p19 glider gun.
Suppose that someone is lucky and discovers a p20 glider gun that has mod 5 (i.e. it rotates 90 degrees after every 5 ticks, and shoots gliders in four directions).
Suppose further that someone is very lucky, and there would be an easy way to transform the mod-5 p20 glider gun into a closely-related mod-4 p16 glider gun, by adding or removing or changing catalysts.
Suppose that someone is extremely lucky, and it happened to be possible to adjust independently each of four 5-tick rotations into a 4-tick rotation.
That would lead to glider guns of periods from 16 through 20, covering in particular p17 and p19. Whether or not it sounds plauslble enough to configure and run any resource-consuming searches is an open question.

Here is a pattern that can non-destructively detect a shifted ants component within an ants wick.
In practice, the boat and block have to be detected and deleted by other reactions before another shifted ant arrives.
I don't know if the detection pattern can be constructed from one side. If it can't, then some similar pattern might work too. (These are hard to find since the ant wick is fragile.)
I thought that if the ants wick could be terminated on the right, even if it contained the occasional shifted ant, and if a shifted ant could be created at will at the beginning of the wick, then this would make a lightspeed signal.
Of course, an ant wick termination mechanism might also detect a shifted ant, but a reaction like the one shown here decouples that need from the termination, perhaps making it easier to find.

I didn't find a glider construction for the polynomino shown above, but I did find other reactions which I can build. Here is a complete one which has an easy output glider.
I know that the emitter and consumer objects for a shifted ant stream is difficult, if not impossible, but this was still a nice exercise.
It might be interesting to finish this up with guns to create a repeated detection, with a row of ants containing a few shifted ones within a cylindrical universe, so you could watch it run forever.

I would expect the hardest part to be discovering a "signal injector" component, where a signal "from outside" (e.g. carried by a glider) would be injected into the imagined p5n wire and carried further by a "shifted ant". If that can be solved, then a fencepost that can tolerate "shifted ants" probably would be the second-hardest part, and then finding a receiver with low recovery time and/or with low base period (it might be possible to find a receiver without having to repeatedly test for the presence of a "shifted ant", and instead let the "shifted ant" pulse be responsible for triggering the mechanism).

I went ahead and finished a repeating shifted ant detection construction.
EDIT:
I just found the article viewtopic.php?&p=40754#p40754 by Jormungant from 2017 which has a much better mechanism to use ants to send a signal.
Since the staggered ant stream is regular, emitters and receivers of the stream are much more feasible to find, being only period 10 with a period 5 reflection.

There is a 4-cell reduction to Guntrue_116 in the middle catalyst on the south side:
As near as I can tell, it is an eater 2 welded to a glider eater. It seems like this should be able to be done more efficiently if these are its only functions. Does anybody have any insight on this structure, or is this a case where it works and improvements would not decrease the bounding box, so it hasn't been worth the effort to try to minimize? It seems fairly likely that there's a glider recipe that can restore that damage to the end of the lightspeed wire. (I'm not a likely candidate to figure out that recipe -- but if a recipe appears, I could build a converter that produces the necessary gliders.)
Is it maybe possible to find another set of bait still lifes that allows the signal to escape while causing an even smaller change to the end of the wire?

This new way of extracting a signal from the wire is very interesting. Can you tell more about the way you found the pattern ?
