(B36/S23) HighLife patterns I found.

Post by _Q3 »

These are patterns I found/made on HighLife. Information of discovered patterns is difficult, so I don't know if these are original. Please tell me if they are not. I just wanted to share these. But even if it is not original, it is still satisfying to discover things. :D
Also, please share your own discoveries in HighLife!

# HighLife rule
# I don't know if some or all of these are known,
# but I found/made them independently (Excluding the glider rake & the bomber's predecessor).

Hello, and welcome to the forums!

As you have figured out, it is quite easy to create different puffers in HighLife. And if something is simple to make, it is usually not considered very interesting. However, it would suddenly become interesting if you figured a way to utilise one of your puffers in a complex construction, or if you did an exhaustive search (e. g. find all puffers that can be made with N bombers). This is much like the situation with arks (= pairs of mutually stabilising switch engines) in Life. Every particular ark is not that interesting, but when Michael Simkin (correct?) did a search and published thousands of them, he received many thanks.

I would also like to draw your attention to the pattern on the far left. It features the bog-standard blinker-pull reaction, but the blinker moves at speed slower than c/6. Actually, you can make it move at lots of different speeds by putting replicators differently in front of it, and, if you find a slow push reaction, you can make slow spaceships! Adam P. Goucher did exactly that, and you can find information about it here.
There are 10 types of people in the world: those who understand binary and those who don't.
