One issue: when rewound, these gliders would have had to pass through one another if they came from infinity. In fact, I don't think that particular configuration of gliders is glider-constructable to begin with by only using gliders coming from infinity.

Um... technically it's a little useless to be a glider synthesis, but I get your point. No offense.

I found a three-glider collision with an Integral sign in its debris.

This can be reduced to:

Code: Select all

x = 14, y = 19, rule = B3/S23
$7bo$6bo$6b3o2$2o$2o10$5b2o$5b2o!
And stabilized using another two blocks:

Code: Select all

x = 23, y = 37, rule = B3/S23
6$8b2o$8b2o8$13bo$12bo$12b3o2$6b2o$6b2o10$3b2o6b2o$3b2o6b2o!
Probably useless, I'm guessing two SL is enough for integral sign.

Pi-to-Prepulsar, but the pulsar destroys the block.

I will search for a 2 SL seed... in the meantime, what do you guys think about the bookend catalyst?

I think it's useless, but maybe bellman (or some other search program) can find a replacement for those blocks...

Well technically it's not catalyst as the blocks are destroyed. It also useless, so nothing exciting, maybe a bit unusual.

NOTE bellman is catalyst search utility, it's not made to search for SL seeds.

Tub + 4 Pre-traffic lights = small lake;

2 SL seed for snake:

Code: Select all

o$b2o$2o12$26b2o$18b3o5b2o!
I'm calling this one a "skewed paperclip":

Code: Select all

x = 105, y = 37, rule = Life

I have no doubt this has already been discovered:

I have recently been playing with odd symmetric reactions involving pi-heptominoes, that produce mirrored inductor coils.

EDIT: Some spark coil producing ones, the last one seems the most promising:

Code: Select all

Long hooks:

Code: Select all

More messy R-mango one:

Once this turns into traffic lights, only one blinker from each is needed. Tub plus four blinkers was, in fact, the way the small lake was first synthesized, from 9 gliders. This has since been superceded by an 8-glider synthesis.
gmt_nxtman wrote:I have no doubt this has already been discovered:
This uses the same method as the minimal 4-glider synthesis of 16.355, which forms the pi heptomino directly from two gliders.
gmt_nxtman wrote:I'm calling this one a "skewed paperclip":
Your name for 14.61 certainly seems appropriate. While this synthesis (8 gliders) is not optimal, with the best currently requiring only 6, it's certainly different than any I have recorded, so I will add it to the database when I get a chance to update it.

I have some stuff:
A very large spark

Code: Select all

x = 18, y = 18, rule = B3/S23
8b2o$8b2o$2b2o10b2o$2b2o10b2o$7b4o$6bo4bo$5bob4obo$4bobo4bobo$2o2bobob

2o$2b2o10b2o$8b2o$8b2o!
Removing one of the corner blocks makes a longer-lived spark:

Code: Select all

x = 18, y = 18, rule = B3/S23
8b2o$8b2o$2b2o$2b2o$7b4o$6bo4bo$5bob4obo$4bobo4bobo$2o2bobob2obobo2b2o

2o$8b2o$8b2o!
Removing all the corner blocks will convert the block in the middle into a pond:

Code: Select all

x = 18, y = 18, rule = B3/S23
8b2o$8b2o3$7b4o$6bo4bo$5bob4obo$4bobo4bobo$2o2bobob2obobo2b2o$2o2bobob
2obobo2b2o$4bobo4bobo$5bob4obo$6bo4bo$7b4o3$8b2o$8b2o!
Removing all of the blocks will create 4 ponds:

3b4o$2bo4bo$bob4obo$obo4bobo$obob2obobo$obob2obobo$obo4bobo$bob4obo$2b

And it can be stabilized to create a large, 73 bit still-life:

Thanks! :wink: I'll have to wait until a little bit longer to post a pattern, as it's rather late... but thanks!

On another note, was there a synth for this oscillator? I'm wondering if I found a synthesis for a new pattern, or just an improvement on an existing one...

I don't recall ever having seen this particular stator arrangement for this oscillator before, so yes, this is new. I'll add it to my database the next time I get around to updating it.

The immediate predecessorslook like they could be easy to synthesize. However, as this object can already be made from 4 gliders, there is little point in doing so.
gmc_nxtman wrote:Also, this methuselah(?) of population 26, lifespan of just over 10,000 ticks emitting a LWSS and a MWSS in the same spot:
It actually stabilizes at generation 7706. Methuselahs typically have very low populations Ii.e. in the original definition, 10 cells or less), and/or small bounding boxes. This has neither. It is trivial to construct an 8-cell methuselah that runs for an long time. For example, an R-pentomino a million cells away from a pre-pre-beehive (population 9) can fire a glider at the beehive, which turns it into an R-pentomino, which fires a gliders back at the first R-pentomino's ash. This could take 8 million generations for the gliders to go back and forth before stabilization, but is hardly noteworthy, as one can make are an infinite number of these, just by increasing the spacing by an arbitrary amount.

I know that my pattern is not really notable as a methuselah; but it is notable in other aspects.

I used to try and search for "methuselahs" when I was new to GoL. I found several with low lifespan, (378 ticks or so) and high initial population. In my opinion way too many people post methuselahs like that. This is why I rarely post methuselahs, because honestly most "methuselahs" people find either are

•Not notable as a methuselah (having short lifespan, high initial bounding box/population)
•Are somewhat notable, but don't have any reason why they should be listed (no unique property, no unique patterns in final census (unlike mine).

Anyways, I found a natural Jam.

If you collide a glider with those 2 Blocks and 1 hive, it creates a block and glider, the glider going in sthe same way as the original. However, if you put another block, it will catalyse the destruction of the 3 other SLs and send back the glider.
So, the presence or not of the block creates 2 different block&gliders

Before a Bellman search gets going, it's probably a good idea to find a reasonable way for another circuit to place a Herschel in that location.

The same caveat applies to the B-heptomino eaters. If the input object had to magically appear in the start location (in the absence of some completely new conduit with an unknown mechanism) then the reaction is very likely a dead end -- technically it works, but there's no way to build anything bigger with it.

True.

Anyways I would rather focus on my main interest, syntheses and natural objects. So here are a few.

At generation 29, this forms a loaf and beehive in each octant, with four blocks in the corners. Removing half of this forms one oscillator with different debris from four loaves, four beehives, and two blocks. This is doable, although fairly expensive.

The essential predecessor is a pair of interacting pi heptominos on each side. The left ones must be formed unobtrusively, while the right ones require a very specific predecessor which occurs rarely. I have a partial solution that makes three of them, but good luck in squeezing the fourth one in!

Since a hexapole currently takes 12 gliders, and the predecessor would likely take at least 6 per side, so this would not likely provide any improvement.
