Re: Rule of the Week

Post by LuveelVoom »

I vote for Spines. My rationale for this is as follows:
-Phex feels too narrow for a wide scale exploration, as I don’t see what one could do besides circuitry and maybe constructing some rakes (although, if a reaction for a constructable ship exists, that could be a fun project). It’s a fine rule (these are all good rules), but it doesn’t seem like the sort of thing to do for a RotW.
-StatesHunter for the above reason as well; it seems to me like a variant of stateinvestigator, which isn’t really the sort of thing that would require coordinated investigation in a RotW.
-FactorioR2, from some messing around, seems like a fairly dry rule (I have this opinion of factorio as well.) There don’t seem to be many reactions or other things that could be used to keep a multi day exploration going.
-Photons10v0 suffers from two issues: first, it’s extremely complex (and laggy) and second a lot of its objects seem to be built in by the ruletable. I am confused about what’s even going on in the soups of this rule. I think the creator of the ruletable got a bit too ambitious (how many states does it have again? lemme check EDIT: Two hundred and twenty. how long did this take??????)
-Spines is naturalistic R1, avoiding many of the above issues, and seems to have common enough structures that interesting constructions could be made. Thus my vote is for spines.

It's Monday now, and that means it's time to count up the votes:
Spines: 3 votes
photons10v0: 2 votes
Primeria: 1 vote
Phex: 1 vote
StatesHunter: 1 vote
FactorioR2: 1 vote

Spines (B012aen3-kr4enz5acny6-k7e/S2-k3-in4-cirwy5-jy6in) has been voted to be RotW 2!!

People still have time to vote until 00:00 UTC on April 1st, but I don't think that'd make any noticeable change in voting.

What's the point of changing your vote many times in a row?

And wouldn't it simplify everything to just edit the earlier post if you want to change your vote, instead of posting again?

I remove Wickstretcher and the Adjustable Spaceships 2 as a nominee.

I vote for Calthrops.

EDIT: Please keep my nominees if they failed to be RotW, until I ask to remove one.

Nominate T-logic 4 and vote for it. How ROTW2 is still undecided yet but the time is already over.

Additionally, while I'm not entirely sure what exactly I would want to propose instead, I feel like one week is too short for anything sensible to happen.
Maybe it would work better to make it a monthly event.
Maybe it would work better to avoid tying it to any fixed schedule, and instead rely on consensus.

It's worth brainstorming what the situation is, and what could be done, at least in principle.

I agree with confocaloid in that it should be “Rule of the Month”. Also, we should probably add a rule that no forum thread exists for it, as otherwise discussion could be posted in the thread instead of here, which defeats the point of it. Also, I feel like this should be moved to the oca forum. Nominating B2i3-cky/S23-ky4q.
It has 3 small spaceships, the critter, glider, and ant respectively:

Due to the extremely common phase shift mechanisms, putting stars together in different shapes may lead to results like the p28, but it commonly just turns into p8s, which are not notable at all in this rule. Just put a few blocks and stars together, and just get lucky, and you’ll get a new oscillator! Just now, I made a p36 which perfectly illustrates that:

Code: Select all

x = 39, y = 35, rule = B2n3-jkq4eirt5cekq6ik/S2-n3-c4eikty5cek

Unfortunately those oscillators are mostly trivial. However, that name is misleading, and they are still extremely interesting.

Here is a few guidelines that are important to follow for hunting for star-oscillators, from most important to least important.
1. Never let the objects interact in any way other than B2n.
2. When finding star-oscillators, never let the edge cell in the rotated square phase touch anything. It’s easier to just show:

Code: Select all

x = 55, y = 22, rule = B2n3-jkq4eirt5cekq6ik/S2-n3-c4eikty5cekSuper

3. Blocks are end caps, not to be embedded in the oscillator:

Code: Select all

 x = 22, y = 27, rule = B2n3-jkq4eirt5cekq6ik/S2-n3-c4eikty5cekSuper
D3.D14.D$.D.D14.D$2.D10.D3.D$.D.D10.D.D$D3.D10.D6$14.2A$14.2A2$3.A13.

17.A3.A$8.A9.A.A$7.A.A9.A$6.A3.A$7.A.A$8.A!
4. Stick to the grid; you will be more likely to find star-oscillators if you stick to the imaginary rotated square grid:

Code: Select all

x = 22, y = 20, rule = B2n3-jkq4eirt5cekq6ik/S2-n3-c4eikty5cekSuper
6.D6.D3.D$5.D8.D.D$D3.D10.D$.D.D10.D.D$2.D10.D3.D5$.2A$.2A10.2A$13.2A

$6.2A!
And that’s about it! Note that these rules are not necessary to follow; there may be exceptions, but it is always good to follow the rules. Happy hunting!

This thread is way too "chatty" for anything beyond the Sandbox. It should remain in the Sandbox.

I'm not sure about "no forum thread exists for it". Certainly a forum thread shouldn't be required (that would unnecessarily encourage posting threads for nonnotable CA), but would disallowing it entirely help? Maybe I'm missing the idea?

Unlikely events happen.
