It is a strange asymmetric gun with internal interactions. A small region in the middle is p112, but the entire gun is p224. Capped in [R]Investigator:

Re: Miscellaneous Discoveries in Other Cellular Automata

Every object or set of objects has its rulespace ranging from the minimal number of isotropic transitions that enable its exact behavior to the maximum. These two rules can be viewed as "signatures" of the given object. For example, Nikro has been recently apgsearching a rule that contains the following (2,6c)/14 camelship:

Code: Select all

x = 22, y = 16, rule = B2en3aei5ac6aci7c8/S2-i3-k4c6a7c
7$10b3o$11b2o$9bob2o$9b3o!
Apgsearch automatically determines this object's rulespace. The lower (or should we call it "natural"?) "signature" of it is B2en3aei5ac6aci7c8/S2-i3-k4c6a7c. This precise combination of transitions allows this ship to exist. It is a very interesting rule abundant with semi-natural guns:

Code: Select all

x = 61, y = 55, rule = B2en3aei5ac6aci7c8/S2-i3-k4c6a7c

Unfortunately that doesn't seem to answer the question.

As far as I know, apgsearch doesn't determine the rulespaces, it just does search in whatever CA it was compiled for.
I don't understand what is the intended meaning of "signature" in this case, it doesn't seem to be a defined term.
I don't understand how the idea of CA-related objects being "natural" connects to whatever is the intended meaning in this case either.
All very confusing.

Of course it does, only for regular 2-state isotropic rules though. Not apgsearch as a client, but the Catagolue server:

The minimal set of transitions determines what transitions cause the object's behavior. For example, it is B3aijn/S2ae3jnr for a glider. If you follow the glider's movement, you'll see that these exact birth and survival conditions fully determine its behavior. In a way, it's the glider's "signature" that tells very much about it, how it evolves and why it moves diagonally across the board.

Simpler examples: B/S3a for a block and B3i/S2i for a blinker. By reading these lines, one can even guess the shape of these objects and their evolution.

That looks more like "of course it doesn't", Catagolue /= apgsearch. apgsearch is a soup search program and doesn't currently calculate subspaces of objects AFAIK.

Beyond such simple examples, it would be typically impossible to "guess the shape".

A single rulestring (such as "B3aijn/S2ae3jnr for a glider") only tells
- what are the necessary birth conditions (B3a, B3i, B3j, B3n in this case)
- and what are the necessary survival conditions (S2a, S2e, S3j, S3n, S3r in this case).
A single rulestring like that doesn't really tell the entire subspace where the glider can be found.

It tells very little about the glider. It doesn't tell the shape of the glider, there can be other evolutionary sequences with the same set of necessary birth/survival conditions. It doesn't tell which birth/survival conditions are optional and which are forbidden.

I would rather not call that "the" "signature". It is merely the necessary living conditions, and by itself not too interesting.

To tell the subspace of the glider, one needs to provide more information: for example tell the optional birth conditions and the optional survival conditions (those which can be added without changing evolutionary sequence), or alternatively tell the forbidden birth conditions and the forbidden survival conditions (those which cannot be added without changing evolutionary sequence).

(Indeed, one can provide useful redundancy and tell all of them:
  • necessary birth conditions (for the glider, those can be written as B3aijn)
  • necessary survival conditions (for the glider, those can be written as S2ae3jnr)
  • optional birth conditions (for the glider, those can be written as B2ikn3cekqry4aceijknqtwyz5aceijkqry6aceikn7ce8)
  • optional survival conditions (for the glider, those can be written as S02cikn3aceikqy4aceijnqrtwyz5aceijknqry6aceikn7ce8)
  • forbidden birth conditions (for the glider, those can be written as B01ce2ace4r5n)
  • forbidden survival conditions (for the glider, those can be written as S1ce4k)
Computers and people work in different ways. Computers are better at things like "deriving forbidden living conditions from the rest" or "deriving optional living conditions from the rest".)

As for the claim about those rulestrings being "natural", I think that's misleading as well. Arguably it would be more natural to look at birth conditions and death conditions (those that are necessary for a given evolutionary sequence; those that are optional and can be added/removed; those that are forbidden and must be absent in the CA definition).

Alternatively, write down explicit rules that prescribe state changes (birth rules / "B", death rules / "D") and are necessary for the evolutionary sequence in question, then write down the implied rules that prescribe "stay as is unchanged" (nonbirth rules / "A", survival rules / "S") and are necessary for the evolutionary sequence in question, and then all remaining rules are optional. RuleLoader ruletables work that way by default (unless you override that by a "catch-all" death rule added at the end).

I don't mean Hensel notation in particular. To me it is one of many possible ways to describe the birth and death conditions. Necessary, optional and forbidden, as I said, require two rulestrings, the lower and the upper edge of the rulespace. I read rulestrings exactly as explicit rules that prescribe state changes. I rewrite them manually as RuleLoader ruletables all the time in order to tweak and add things impossible within the regular 2-state isotropic rulespace.

Wow, it feels surreal to be back after nearly a decade! I'm delighted to see this is still the same community I knew, just with some impressive upgrades along the way. It's like reuniting with an old friend who's somehow gotten even better with age. :P

Note that the traditional name of that CA is "StateInvestigator", which is also how you can find out much more about it:

See also the forum thread:

Additionally, please read the forum rules: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=2092 In particular (3a, 3d, 4) in most cases editing the last post is better than posting multiple consecutive posts, and single-line replies are discouraged (especially when the reply doesn't add new knowledge or understanding).

EDIT: It functions all the way from zlife to the maximum transition rule for Snark64's alien variant (with slightly different behavior depending on if S4c is added)!

According to my tabulations, this means there is now a p13 oscillator for all Isotropic Non-totalistic rules - EDIT2: sigh  within range1 standard moore neighborhood on a 2d square grid - that contain Snarks, Snark64, Herschel Conduits, or the Scorbie Splitter-based reflector (and thereby have a complete infinite set of oscillators above a certain period)
confocaloid wrote: April 2nd, 2025, 10:23 am That claim cannot possibly be correct, as stated.

"All isotropic non-totalistic" is way too wide. There are infinitely many isotropic non-totalistic CA. Finitely many are supported in Golly/LifeViewer, but very very many. And very many of those isotropic non-totalistic cellular automata support the Snark, the Snark64, some Herschel conduits, and/or the Scorbie Splitter.
Satisfied?

Currently working to improve Life's guns and work on updating SKOPs and Isotropic rules most similar to B3/S23 to Life standards. Will get software to begin searches eventually.
