Sure! Name changes do happen occasionally, and not just because of gender transitions.

But it's not going to become a common practice. Once a name has been established and is recognizable in the community, then ... in the absence of a clear good reason, what effect is an arbitrary username change going to have besides causing a little bit of confusion? Every previous post that refers to "X's discovery" or "X's idea" would make a little bit less sense, especially to newcomers to the forums.

In the general case, "leave well enough alone" seems to be a good rule of thumb. Moderators can certainly decide to make exceptions, but it seems like the more often people ask for arbitrary name changes, the less likely it is that anyone will want to implement them.

Could the "Patterns" section and its current description be changed to "Conway’s Game of Life" and with a different description to:
1. Prevent confusion with OCA patterns, and while it is very rare, it still happens nonetheless. And;
2. Provide a wider range of items to talk and discuss about, including the fact that some threads are about Conway’s Game of Life, they are not about any specific pattern or any family of patterns contrary to the description provided for the "Patterns" topic. A very notable example of this is the "Conway's Life Exploratorium" thread, which is pinned but does not fully adhere to the description of the "Patterns" topic.

I can confirm that the current description is imperfect. The description of "Patterns" says: "For discussion of specific patterns or specific families of patterns, both newly-discovered and well-known."
That doesn't say anywhere explicitly that the "Patterns" section is CGoL-only. Probably that should be mentioned.

However, I'm not sure about "a wider range of items to talk and discuss about". There is already General Discussion, whose description says "For general discussion about Conway's Game of Life."
Doesn't that already cover discussions that are about Conway’s Game of Life, but they are not about any specific pattern or any family of patterns?
(Maybe "Exploratorium" needs to be moved to General Discussion too, by that logic.)

Is there an appropriate reason for existence of two forum threads with the exact same subject line?

viewtopic.php?f=12&t=6850 "[GAME] Building CA from the Ground Up"
To be clear, the first (and older) topic was an attempt by me to make a CA game in the Sandbox which will actually contribute to productive discussion about CA, in that the ideas from there can be directly applied to actual CA research (though not now, as we were only on 2-state 1D CA where the only neighbour of a cell was the cell on the left of it).

I really do not like unname's fork, as 1. It defeats the purpose of the game, and 2. It has the same title as my thread, as you stated.

When examining an object in the new smaller window, only a few lines at a time are visible.

Using the scroll wheel or a mouse on the scroll bar moves the view too much so that it is difficult to see all of the text.

Is it possible to change the scroll action to fix this for the small windows? Scrolling by one line at a time would be great.

It appears that recently some forum thread pages began requesting some resources from an external website, noticeably slowing down page load time. Example forum thread page:
viewtopic.php?f=12&t=403&start=225
Here is a requested URL (not sure if all of them are the same):

Code: Select all

https://u.cubeupload.com/hotcrystal/glenchcomtmnthotcrys.png
It isn't too hard to block specific URLs once noticed, but it remains annoying.

I think that picture is entirely offtopic on these forums, as well as being otherwise potentially rule-violating.

I can see how it would be offtopic, but what rule other than that does it violate?

Doxxing (whether true or not), and all links to that image need to be deleted.

... and more interestingly, whether it is a good idea to make one.

Interesting questions need actual discussion, nontrivial amount of brainstorming, thinking about possibilities, and so on.
Polls do not answer interesting questions. Polls do not solve interesting problems. Often, polls create new (and much less interesting) problems without resolving any old problems.
