There's already a Pedestrian Life snippet, thanks to hotdogPi's additions from a couple of years ago. But yeah, there are lots and lots of candidates for advertisable articles. If anyone wants to build a bunch more snippets and then post a list here, I can update the necessary pages to get all snippets into the rotation.

They might still not show up during any given rotation due to potential weird caching issues -- but some snippet will show up on every main-page load, and eventually a sufficiently assiduous reader would see them all.

Can this be added to Tutorials/Catalyses?

Leaf Bug and Water Strider are not showing up on Category:Spaceships with speed 31c/240

EDIT by dvgrn: They're showing up fine on that page for me. Not sure what happened here -- there don't seem to be recent edits that would have fixed this reported problem, but maybe I'm missing something.

In general, whenever you expect to see some page in a category (because it was included) but don't see that page listed in the category, try clicking the link "refresh" on the right. In this case, the link "refresh" leads to this:

https://conwaylife.com/w/index.php?titl ... tion=purge

It asks "Purge the cache of this page?" Clicking OK will return back to the category page, and any missing pages should now be visible.

In the event there's no "refresh" link on the right, you can do the following:
  • Switch to the tab "View source" (instead of "Read"). In this case

    Code: Select all

    https://conwaylife.com/w/index.php?title=Category:Spaceships_with_speed_31c/240&action=edit
  • Go to the address bar of your browser, and at the end of the URL manually replace "action=edit" by "action=purge":

    Code: Select all

    https://conwaylife.com/w/index.php?title=Category:Spaceships_with_speed_31c/240&action=purge
  • Now you have the same link that would be accessible via "refresh".

Wouldn’t this snippet also deserve an update:

https://conwaylife.com/wiki/Glider_synt ... _syntheses

Several of the small spaceships mentioned there now have a syntheses.

EDIT by dvgrn: That section isn't exactly the glider-synthesis snippet, but it is where the out-of-date list was. I think I've removed what has been synthesized so far, but at the rate we're going there might be another update needed soon.

Not an affirmative or rejection, but there is also no p57 glider gun page on the wiki, which is the only period below 61 (excluding those using filtered streams) to not have it's own page or mention on the related oscillator's page on the wiki.

Gliderless guns are interesting, I think several of them were discovered recently, they might deserve more than a page (a POTY2024 nomination?)

...Then there are other discoveries which may deserve a POTY nomination but weren't nominated [yet], and there are other notable topics without wiki articles [yet].

Would it make sense to add ikpx2 width as a sixth size metric on the Spaceship Search Status Page? Ikpx2 is currently one of the best programs for finding asymmetric spaceships, but it's somewhat difficult to figure out what has been searched and how much work is needed to reach unexplored search spaces.

Also, it would be useful to include progress files of the largest completed searches to avoid repeated work. RLS, ikpx2, and several other programs support resuming partial searches from files.

Here is an addition to the "reanimation" LifeWiki article.

(I don't know if it is necessary to show the backward glider conversion convoys here, but I think including them makes
the examples more informative. Cut them out if you want.)

----------------------------------------------------------

Reanimation reactions have also been found for diagonal c/4 technology which can convert several different still lifes into sideways gliders.

The most useful of these reactions can reanimate a single loaf or ship (which can be created from a single backward glider).

These demonstrate the relevant reactions [1] [2].

Code: Select all

#C A backward glider is converted into a loaf, which is then flipped,
#C and then reanimated.

I think there should be a category on the wiki for unnamed hassling regions, where hasslers of unnamed regions can go with a little descriptor of each somewhere.

EDIT: or maybe just an option for uncommon hassled objects, named or not, with room for hassled objects like I-heptominos or Herschels.

Doublepost, but different topic.

I think the Eater 1 page (Hungryeaters1) should note the Eater 1's ability to eat a loafer and a dart (a little more fitting than the eater + tub eating MWSS in my opinion), as well as the ability of the ships to come from infinity.

^^ The most likely outcome is that the answer will become "arbitrarily large", when someone discovers an extensible spaceship containing either a wick segment or a wave segment, such that when the "head" is eaten by a single eater 1, the remaining "tail" burns cleanly as a fuse without leaving any leftover junk.

Can someone revise the P80 gliderless HWSS gun to be a page about the p80 R-pentomino hassler instead, since the mechanism now supports the smallest p80 glider gun and numerous other technologies associated with smallest guns?

Disagree. There are lots of hasslers with unsure notability. There are relatively few known gliderless guns.

In any case, creating a new separate page for the hassler (if considered notable; LW:NB) would be definitely better than trying to repurpose an existing page about another topic.

The "in the news" item about the new smallest unsynthesizable still life doesn't link to the correct place.

EDIT by dvgrn: Fixed by Sokwe.

Code: Select all

The edits https://conwaylife.com/w/index.php?titl ... did=161164 add a link to viewtopic.php?p=132694#p132694 which is unrelated.

From the content of the added news item, I think the link should be replaced by viewtopic.php?p=209209#p209209

A likely reason is copy/paste error, because the same link appeared in the recent post viewtopic.php?p=209323#p209323

I suggest that it would be better if the pattern in the 'Sawtooth 177' LifeWiki article was advanced by 15 generations so that it is shown at its actual minimum population.

The current pattern does have a smaller bounding box, but since that isn't any record, a smaller bounding box is of secondary importance.

I can do that at some point. First I'm trying to decide whether it's a good idea for the new "Sawtooth 172" and "Sawtooth 168" to each get their own pages, following the sort-of tradition of "Sawtooth 181" and so on. "Sawtooth 172" currently has a redlink in "Sawtooth 177", and "Sawtooth 168" has redlinks now that it's mentioned in "Sawtooth" and in the Did-You-Knows.

An alternate idea would be to move all of the sawtooth patterns in this family into one article, with a table of contents and a linkable header for each sawtooth. Starting with Sawtooth 201, I believe, there are several patterns that all use 58P5H1V1 and have an expansion factor of 121, and it might be nice to be able to compare them on the same page.

That would follow the relatively recent tradition of documenting optimizations (see, e.g., the period-14 glider gun article). It would make it easy to add further record-breakers in the future -- until it's time to start a new sawtooth family, anyway! Redirects could be added to the appropriate sections from "Sawtooth 168" and so on.

Thoughts on this?

I don't mind if you make a nice table like you suggest, listing the record-breaking or notable sawtooths, with links to the details.

I want to make a couple of small additions to your comments.

The expansion factors of the latest sawtooths aren't all 121. My new-style sawtooth 177 has an expansion factor of 41 or 1682, depending on whether or not it is the every-other-cycle minimum version or not. (I just edited my older post to explain this).

Also, it is true the the newer sawtooths for over 10 years all use the 58P5H1V1 spaceship, because it is the smallest known diagonal spaceship slower than a glider. But the glider reactions using that ship have changed, which I think is important to note.

The text "(if not the only program)" should be deleted from the 'Golly' LifeWiki page.

(My own life program, for example, can run OTCA patterns quickly too.)

I just checked the honey farm hasslers and shuttles and traffic light hasslers for 180P8s that could be replaced with 164P8s and changed them. The p56 LOM page was also changed because one of them was the same pattern as one in the traffic light section. However, I have a job, and I can't check the rest of the hassler pages right now without taking time out of my job. Is someone else able to complete the task?

Unrelated: Look at https://conwaylife.com/wiki/Highest_vol ... scillators. (6 if part of the link gets cut off by an ellipsis.) The "rotor size" should either

1. be renamed minimum population (and have a few entries changed)
2. change (almost) all the numbers to the number of active cells throughout the entire oscillator (which LifeViewer shows through Identify) as the equivalent page for p5 already does.
3. show both like the p3, p4, and p8 pages already do.

p7 has the same issue as the p6 page.
