Icon performance is also poor on my iPad - the viewer's speed is roughly cut in half when enabled. This affects the playback speed for scripted sequences considerably. From what I can see, if I get 60fps without icons, I get 30fps with them.

Here's something using the naming system I proposed earlier when talking about recreating that specific gif. This will give errors since the system isn't implemented yet, but should work if it happens,

Since the Minecraft Wiki now uses LifeViewer, should this be mentioned on the list on GitHub?

As there's now increased interest in circular neighbourhoods, could a circular neighbourhood on the hexagonal grid be added? This post and those quoted may contain useful information, and this post has an example pattern and neighbourhood.

Non-deterministic HROT rules now support an additional parameter:

• Rrange,Cstates,Ssurvival-list,Bbirth-list,Nneighborhood[,P[survive%[,birth%[,immunity%]]]
  • survival% is the chance that a cell actually survives when the rule specifies it should
  • birth% is the chance that a cell is actually born when the rule specifies it should
  • immunity% is the chance that a cell survives when the rule specifies it should die
  • if only survival% is specified then that value is also used for birth%, and immunity% is set to 0%
  • if none are specified then random values are used for survival% and birth%, and immunity% is set to 0%

You may now use # in place of a parameter value to make it random. For example:

An immediate question: are there any specific reasons for the choice of the letters 'P' and 'U'?

I'm not sure whether this would work better as a LifeViewer feature, or rather (at least for the Moore neighbourhood) by making a dedicated four-state CA using RuleLoader in the usual old way. As long as you don't care about precise probabilities, it should be possible to make two "weakly interacting universes", with one universe "running some chaos" and another running the two-state CA of interest with pseudorandom "errors" depending on the "noise".

Additionally, if one just wants to generate pseudorandom rules once (and then apply them consistently) with restrictions of the described kind, I believe that is already possible, one can set chances of specific birth conditions and specific survival conditions:

Dark mode appears to modify the top bar on Samsung Galaxy phones, which includes when using a custom color. I don't know how this part of the popup can be exempted from this, or if it even should.

I've been thinking of two things:
- having these on the LifeViewer wiki page under the main embed could make it more obvious to newer readers how the script commands work and such, and how they can be modified and the results previewed in real-time
- on the Known Bugs page, there are (and were) some issues with saving and loading patterns which can't be easily seen if the only thing you have is an embedded thumbnail

Not exactly related to LifeViewer, but is CXRLE documented anywhere? It isn't mentioned much on the wiki. Does it only control the starting generation and pattern coordinates?

I've noticed that on this page, the text within LifeViewer is noticeably more bold than anywhere else. However, this only appears to affect mobile Safari - neither my desktop computers nor phone appear to be rendering the text bold like this. Is there some HTML text formatting bleeding into the viewer that only some browsers know to catch? Is the font even supposed to be customizable at all (this somewhat ties back into the "fitting LifeViewer on other sites" question from earlier)? I've already mentioned a year ago that the font used appears different across operating systems as well.

If we use Select All on this, it selects the entire object, but attempting to do anything at all with that selection (rotation, flipping, inverting, ...) will cause nothing (EDIT: see below) to happen (except for displaying errors with rotation).

If there are intentional limitations on areas which can be modified using the in-viewer tools, I'd prefer this to be communicated in a more obvious way - the current behaviour is unexpected and confusing.

Perhaps this "uneditable area" could be visually indicated in some way. Similarly to how out-of-bounds areas are solid gray, the "area which cannot be edited" could use red background cells, visible only when in Draw or Select mode. Attempting to draw in this area would not work, and attempting to create a selection would have the selection unable to extend into the red area, much like when trying to create a selection that extends outside of a bounded grid. If Select All would result in a selection extending into this region, the selection would be cut off so that all selected cells are within the normal editable zone.

Side note: the above example used to have STARTFROM 29, but that seems to crash the popup on my iPad now (it wasn't on the site - perhaps it's because I still have 1278 cached there, and 1279 changed something?); this is why the bottom of the selection will be changed by the operations mentioned above, even though that originally didn't happen.

Following up on the "patterns on desktop run faster than expected" issue: I've tried running all five examples on this test page. Turning on Frame Times reveals the framerate to be 120fps at this specific time for all five embedded viewers. The results are the following:
60fps: 8.34s
59fps: 8.33s
30fps: 8.33s
10fps: 8.33s
1fps: 8.33s

Monitor's refresh rate is 144hz. Indeed, multiplying 8.33 by 144/120 gets us 10, the expected amount of time. Evidently what is being done to standardize playback speed is not working correctly in my setup.

The playback speed appears to be higher when the framerate of the viewer is lower - when I tested it when the displayed framerate was 75fps, the elapsed time was 5.21 seconds. 5.21 multiplied by 144/75 gets us 10.

Yet to get the viewer to slow down on this page on iPad so I'll report back with results if/when this happens to see how things compare.

This pattern (taken from here) appears to give an error about a = symbol in the pattern file, but I don't see any other than the ones in the RLE header, which seems correctly formatted. Also, I can't help but take notice of the comments - these appear to be the MCell format. Should the Comments menu account for this and convert these into dedicated headers (and possibly script commands and bounded grid specifications) accordingly?

I intended to specify in said post that the error was not a script error but a loading error - the triangular [R]History example no longer works as it previously did.

[R]History on Triangular neighbourhoods was deprecated in build 748.

The frame rate detection didn't work on your setup. In the browser console it should say "refresh rate xxHz". Let me know what is says.

I think showing "how the script commands work and such" can and should be implemented through the usual MediaWiki templates (so that when you pass a snippet into the template, it is passed both into an embedded viewer and into part of the displayed text).

Instead of modifying the LifeViewer source code to account for various specific applications/contexts where it is used, it would be better to adjust the applications (in this case, create MediaWiki templates) to solve the same problem.

Firefox, for comparison, seems to be much more consistent in being 144fps (however the timing is still slightly ahead of being 60fps):

If you're having problems with LifeViewer's monitor refresh rate detection then build 1281 might help.

It adds Settings>Advanced>Refresh Rate which allows you to override the monitor refresh rate detection:

• specify a refresh rate from 25Hz to 500Hz or Auto (the default)
• the setting will be saved for the current browser on the current device
