Is there any way to disable the "cells killed after hitting boundary" message? It shows up multiple times in this animation and looks kind of silly:

Here is an animation based on Alexey_Nigin's excellent Happy New Year pattern that demonstrates:

• using the XOFFSET command to place a pattern at the right hand side of the grid
• the improved handling of patterns hitting the grid boundary

As for signature maps: could these be calculated for oscillator periods up to 64 or so and nothing higher than that, so we don't need to account for absurd numbers of distinct colours and excessive calculation times?

For medium to high periods, the number of possibilities very quickly grows. So in many cases, there would be way too many colo(u)rs to distinguish them all. It would no longer be a reasonable expectation to be able to understand something interesting about an oscillator by looking at such a map (rather than looking at a simpler map, such as cell periods or frequencies).

Evidently I completely underestimated how fast this sequence grows.

12 seems like a reasonable maximum period to cut this off - assuming a scrollable legend is implemented, a maximum of 188 distinct colours seems quite manageable (telling them apart is a different issue, but I imagine most people would only be concerned with lower periods' signatures in the first place). 12 is also a low enough period that evaluating each cell's signature isn't going to impact Identify's time cost by any serious amount.

Regardless, a scrollable legend is going to be basically a requirement at this point, given patterns like this that already overload the legend with the amount of different frequencies:

At this point I'm not sure why deprecation of [[ RAINBOW ]] in favor of [[ SHADER Rainbow ]] would be either a good idea or a bad idea, really.

Not much of a pressing reason, but (except for cases where there are spelling variants, e.g. COLOR/COLOUR) there's often a preference to use one format over the other, so maybe it's best to use [[ SHADER ]] somehow? There's always a chance that these old commands could be repurposed in future for something else (e.g. perhaps there would be a RAINBOW command to render a rainbow in the background like with stars), and it'd be best not to have old patterns produce unexpected results. This new format makes shaders more similar in formatting and such to themes, so this way would presumably be the preferable choice.

Speaking of which, a part of me had expected that changing shaders at given times like themes would have been possible, but that doesn't appear to be the case, which I probably should have expected since different shaders assign internal cell states differently:

It's possible to move a popup viewer window by clicking and dragging its close button: this will cause the popup to be closed once the mouse button is released. I'd expect it to not be possible to move the viewer window using the close button, and that releasing the mouse button would not close the viewer popup if the cursor isn't over the close button at time of release.

Since Rand All isn't currently supported for isotropic non-totalistic rules (it generates outer-totalistic rules instead), should it be disabled in this context, or is the current behaviour correct?

Is the backlog.txt file in the github repository still used at all? It doesn't appear to have been modified since 2023 (except when I did a PR last year), so I assume stuff like this is tracked somewhere else now. If so, should this file be deleted?

Perhaps backlog items could be tracked using the issues section on GitHub, so that the community can propose solutions for things (e.g. selections on hexagonal grids could have the potential solutions compiled there in the comments section). I'd also be interested to know what's queued.

I think it is a reasonable choice to have the PRNG always choose a two-state outer-totalistic cellular automaton on the current tiling. This is unambiguous and easy to remember/predict.

So, if performed on the following pattern, it is reasonable to expect a switch to some (pseudorandomly chosen) two-state outer-totalistic CA on the hexagonal tiling with the honeycomb neighbourhood:

Otherwise, there would be an issue of having to arbitrarily decide whether an element of a subset (such as the set of all 2^18 Life-like cellular automata) counts as an element of that subset "or" as an element of a superset (such as the set of all 2^102 two-state isotropic cellular automata with Moore neighbourhood).
Either that, or it would be necessary to have some way of more explicitly telling the PRNG what sort of a pseudorandom CA to choose (complicating the interactions).

Seems that Pattern -> Save Pattern will remove the line break after the rule name and give an RLE which is technically invalid.

For the build 1254 changes: can Tbl/Map and Per/Frq be swapped, so it's Res/Tbl/Map Per/Frq instead of Res/Per/Frq Tbl/Map?

Also, if Map is selected, and then another pattern is opened and identified, Map being selected as a button will be remembered, but Per/Frq will show a table instead (and scroll arrows will be absent where they apply) until Map is clicked again.

Trying to figure out how to make more meaningful changes to LifeViewer without sufficient programming experience. This is my second time trying to have fixed color values for the nth-highest subperiod of a pattern. The relevant area of code is as follows:

I assume the desired color values would be defined following periodCols[this.popSubPeriod.length - 1], where the same would be written, with 1 replaced with 2, 3 and so on.

Actually getting these colours to appear in maps is where I'm hitting a wall: for line 3111, increasing the x=2 value to something higher makes low periods gray, whereas changing the 1 at the end of the this.subPopPeriod.length - 1 to a higher value overwrites the max period color with the subperiod colors and other things. Changing the - to a + also doesn't produce the correct results.

The solution is presumably painfully obvious, but it just isn't occurring to me. If I wanted tom make the second highest subperiod in any period map the color #1c92cd (unless that subperiod is 1), how would I go about doing so?

If I wanted to make the second highest subperiod in any period map the color #1c92cd (unless that subperiod is 1), how would I go about doing so?

The colours are chosen from the HSL colour wheel. The Hue is an angle from 0 to 360 degrees. The code is dividing that circle into numCols slices:

hue = Math.floor(360 * (y / numCols));

For example if numCols is 4 then you'll get:

• 360 * (0 / 4) = 0
• 360 * (1 / 4) = 90
• 360 * (2 / 4) = 180
• 360 * (3 / 4) = 270

If you want consistent colours then you need to increment the hue by a fixed amount instead of distributing evenly around the colour wheel.

hue = (y * 17) % 360

This would always give the same colour values for the first n entries because the spacing is fixed (in this case 17 degrees). The % (mod operator) wraps the values round to keep within the 360 degrees wheel:

• (0 * 17) % 360 = 0
• (1 * 17) % 360 = 17
• (2 * 17) % 360 = 34
• (3 * 17) % 360 = 51
• (4 * 17) % 360 = 68
• ...
• (21* 17) % 360 = 357
• (22* 17) % 360 = 14

Having said all that I prefer the current method. Whilst I see some value in a fixed colour for the nth entry it's hard to pick a suitable increment (the 17, above) that works nicely for oscillators with wildly varying numbers of sub-periods.

I've achieved the desired result using an ancient sacred technique called "asking someone else to do it for you". From my testing, everything seems functional, so a pull request has been created.

I've noticed on desktop that pattern playback seems to exceed 60gps again sometimes. This probably isn't intended given previous changes but it's what I prefer - I don't know if this could be made a toggle somehow. The speed seems quite inconsistent.

If the speed slider is 1x then LifeViewer will be attempting to keep processing at 60gps regardless of the reported frame rate.

Identifying an oscillator, going to its frequency map, then identifying the oscillator a second time will display its period map, even though the frequency map button is still selected. Either the button should be set back to period mode, it should display the frequency map, or we should always start from the Results page (preferred solution since I think this is how it previously worked, and Res still being selected implies this is the correct behaviour).
