To do:
Omniperiodic
Turing complete
Find a non-c/2 spaceship
Find a diagonal spaceship
Construct a macro-spaceship

Terminologies:
Box: refer to the common 8-cell 3x3 c/2 orthogonal spaceship.

Code: Select all

x = 3, y = 3, rule = Stopbox

Dot: refer to the common 9-cell 3x3 still life.

Code: Select all

x = 3, y = 3, rule = Stopbox

Cross (or flower): refer to the 5-cell 3x3 still life.

Code: Select all

x = 3, y = 3, rule = Stopbox
.B$BAB$.B!
Flesh: commonly arise from large or sparse soups. Large enough flesh would grow infinitely with help of rakes.

Bot idea: find some random soups in Catagolue every day, and post them along with their basic information here.

Is there a still-life that is both constructible (from a collision of "boxes") and destructible (by hitting it with "boxes")?

Do you have any ideas for "exploration targets" in this CA? I'm not sure if this forum thread is likely to get many contributions from other people.

Stopbox is omniperiodic, (very likely) Turing complete and has many box-constructible patterns.

The current goal is to find a spaceship slower than c/2, and a diagonal spaceship - in fact c/2 is currently the only known speed, and every c/2 spaceships must be made of boxes.

Once I'm on my computer, I'll compile APGsearch for Stopbox.

EDIT:
confocaloid wrote: February 2nd, 2025, 2:53 am Here is a highway-robbing 90-degree reflector, there might be a faster one:

This is the second smallest known highway robber:

Code: Select all

x = 69, y = 10, rule = Stopbox
3B$BAB$3B4.3B$7.BAB$7.3B2$20.3B$21.AB20.3B20.3B$20.3B21.AB21.AB$43.3B
20.3B!

The smallest highway robber is simply a dot - the first dot that "robs" the box.

Highway robbers are very easy to construct via this way, due to the nature of boxes and dots.

Heisenburp devices are easily constructed; in this example the box creates sparks to activate a reaction that creates another box, but the box isn't actually affected:

Code: Select all

x = 28, y = 16, rule = Stopbox

Three basic logic gates could be constructed using ANDNOT gates.

Code: Select all

NOT A = 1 ANDNOT A
A AND B = A ANDNOT ( 1 ANDNOT B )
A OR B = 1 ANDNOT ( ( 1 ANDNOT A ) ANDNOT B )
Therefore:

Code: Select all

x = 36, y = 114, rule = Stopbox

$10.3B6.3B.B$21.BAB$21.3B6$19.3B$19.BAB$19.3B$19.3BAB$19.BAB.B$19.3B.
B$19.3B$19.BAB$19.3B2$21.B$20.BAB$21.B10$7.3B8.3B$.B7.A8.BA$BAB.9B5.3B
$.B2.BA2BA2BAB8.B.B$4.9B8.BAB$21.3B4$9.3B6.3B3.3B6.3B$9.BA7.B7.B7.AB$
9.3B6.3B3.3B6.3B$21.B.B$21.BAB$21.3B6$23.3B$23.BAB$23.3B$21.BA3B$21.B
.BAB$21.B.3B$23.3B$23.BAB$23.3B2$23.B$22.BAB$23.B!

This proves Stopbox Turing complete via a predicted computer, like Conway's Life or Eppstein.

It can reflect a box 180 degrees (with 2-cell lane difference), it can delay a box by 13, 14 or 15 ticks, and it can duplicate a box, all without permanent change or damage to the spaceship. I don't know if this would be useful for something, though, since a box cannot catch up to the spaceship of the same speed moving in the same direction:

Re: Stopbox

Rakes are common, and boxes could annihilate or eat other boxes, therefore it's possible for such spaceship made of these components to appear in Catagolue.

Code: Select all

x = 41, y = 20, rule = Stopbox
3B$BA$3B11$18.3B$18.BA14.3B$18.3B13.BA$34.3B$36.A.3B$38.BA$38.3B!
However no known spaceships with period above 12 had occurred.

EDIT:
Fixed the RLE.

This semi-natural p75 has a semi-natural tetramer, both from D8_1 census:

Code: Select all

x = 14, y = 14, rule = Stopbox

EDIT 2:
The D8_1 census reached the 30 million objects milestone! Thanks to the sole contribution of myself.

EDIT 3:
confocaloid wrote: February 4th, 2025, 2:12 am So far I can't seem to find any still-life that is both constructible and destructible. It might be necessary to resort to periodic stationary technology for "destructible" box reflectors, box duplicators, and so on.
Similar period-20 technologies are possible and easier, provided that p20 oscillators are more common, easier to construct, and smaller. These are the reactions between a box and a p20:

Code: Select all

#C 1. Eating a box
#C 2. Shift a box 4 cells towards the catalyst
#C 3. Eating a box, but produce a spark with more clearance
#C 4. Reflecting a box 180°
x = 79, y = 31, rule = Stopbox

Here is a statorless p80 box loop with five boxes and four p20 90-degree reflectors. The reflector (found while looking for a box duplicator) is "strange" in in that one of two boxes from which it's made participates in a 2-to-2 reaction with the incoming box (and is replaced by a new box from the 2-to-2 reaction):

Technically you could say that the box in the p20 that participated in the two-to-two reaction is swapped with the incoming box.

The p20 and p22 produces this spark (shown below, ignoring the box produced in generation 6), and the box produced before the spark dissipate is the reason why they exist.

Code: Select all

x = 3, y = 4, rule = Stopbox
