Azula's Rules

Post by azulavoir »

I've seen some people make threads like these before, so why not. I design rules often enough I can make use of it.

Let's lead with my newest rule: Life with Slow Death. It's like Life without Death, but for every generation a cell lives, it loses one survival transition. Very explosive and I've yet to find any interesting objects in it unless you like watching explosions. Still lives aren't possible since state 10 cells follow B3/S, but oscillators or spaceships might have a chance...

Code: Select all

x=4, y=4, rule=LifeWithSlowDeath
4o$4o$4o!

Secondly: HighAndLowLife. Two coexisting Life universes, but one has cells with doubled values, ergo, a single "high" cell is birthed by b6 on the "low" neighborhood and can sustain "low" cells with s2.

Here's an example pattern from confocaloid, which I dubbed the Eurekagun:

Thirdly, here's "Kernels": It's like Seeds, but far calmer, as births cannot occur in a cell that's exactly four cells from a live cell. This rake is the coolest thing I've found so far.

Next up, we have michelife9, with an absolute monster of a rulestring. It's like basic Life, but if a cell's 9x9 neighborhood has more live cells than dead cells, the cell evolves like it's antiLife instead. This makes the rule self-complementary, yet most cgol patterns work just fine (Most. Honey farms, for example, need not apply.)

Code: Select all

Lastly, we have a 2FTL rule I stumbled across while annoyed by gliders: High Seas. It got its name because it seems to have a higher proportion of the "naval" still lives (boat, ship, barge, canoe, and long versions thereof, and aircraft carriers) in ash than normal, and lacks in small natural spaceships, making it feel akin to a serene ocean.

My favorite reaction in High Seas is the Pis to Pawns:

Code: Select all

x=9, y=10, rule=B3/S234k5y

Here's a simple one: Life, but with b6i, but only vertically.

Code: Select all

x = 121, y = 4, rule = R1,C2,S6-11,13,B9,11,13,18,NW030503030003030503
3o$obo115b3o$obo117bo$118b3o!
Watch how a vertical pi bursts into a massive ash cloud but a horizontal pi just crumples into two blocks.

Code: Select all

x = 37, y = 5, rule = R1,C2,S6-11,13,B9,11,13,18,NW030503030003030503
o$3o$obo31b3o$2bo32bo$33b3o!
Interestingly, upright Herschels last longer and leave more objects before stabilizing, but both orientations have a loaf and a glider.

Code: Select all

x = 24, y = 16, rule = R1,C2,S6-11,13,B9,11,13,18,NW030503030003030503
10o6$23bo$23bo$23bo$23bo$23bo$23bo$23bo$23bo$23bo$23bo!
Even more interestingly, pentadecathla in both orientations die out at the same time, but for entirely different reasons.

I was trying to make a ship turn into something else by gradually tweaking a rule and I.. succeeded, in making a rule with a replicator that works both 4-way and 2-way. Neat.

Here's a new rule: Life, but honeyfarms are unstable and will decay into a set of four highly spaced blinkers if left alone long enough. But it's a slow enough burn that Snarks still work.

Re: Azula's Rules

I went looking for interesting things HoneybloomLife does, and I found one:

It period-triples the birthday puffer.

Code: Select all

x = 16, y = 16, rule = HoneybloomLife

The debris has a distinct threefold pattern caused by backwards gliders, giving it a period of 6912 instead of 2304.

Edit: New thing, a 7300ish gen collision of a honeybloom and a glider.

Code: Select all

x = 18, y = 13, rule = HoneybloomLife

Some of you may have noticed I added a screenshot to my forum signature. It's from another of my rules: OverheatLife.

Simply put, it's Life but oscillators overheat and destabilize if left on long enough - by some of their cells not dying when they are supposed to.

Code: Select all

x=3, y=1, rule=OverheatLife

I wonder if Honeybloom has any hidden secret really cool stuff enabled by the HF explosion...

I think this absolutely massive, natural spaceship is the second most common spaceship in the rule, after the glider - a cap evolves into four copies of it, ten gliders, and some debris.

Can you make a variant of this rule but oscillators begin destabilising after 10 gens?

Weird oblique reaction that could probably be used in a completed (10,4)c/93 puffer or ship.

Edit: a 14c/77 (or 2c/11 with a period septupler?) rake could also support this reaction I think.
