EDIT: here is an example of a problem with pseudo period guns. The gun period is 57, the output glider stream period is 19. There are three different ways to "interpret" this gun as a period-57 gun that shoots glider triplets "xq4_456zy1562zy5247" (rather than single gliders):

Ok, I made tests with this example and you are right - algorithm should know how to work with triplets.
Maybe testing first damaged glider in step 4 will work ok:

If I understand right, your step 1 can be summarised as "ensure that the pattern is a period-N gun". In other words, the pattern must reappear exactly after N ticks (where N needs to be determined), with one or more output gliders appearing on the same lane and moving away from the pattern. If necessary, evolve the initial pattern until all sparks die and the pattern becomes a gun.

In step 2, I think one can choose the leading glider in the output stream of the gun to be the "yellow glider".
(If there are several output gliders per cycle, then one can instead choose the correct number of leading gliders in the output stream to be the "yellow unit".)

Then steps 1 and 2 should be correct, simply because the pattern is determined to be a period-N gun.

I think your step 3 can be replaced with this:

• (3a) Staying within the same phase, "jump back" from the selected "yellow glider", by rewinding the glider back N ticks at a time, and checking each time whether it can be detected in that location and phase. When a "jump" leads to a location where no glider can be detected in this phase, stop.

I think pseudo period guns can be handled by considering the correct number of gliders "as a unit", instead of considering individual gliders. However, that will lead to ambiguity, because the result of the algorithm will depend on how many gliders were there in the initial pattern, modulo (gun_period/output_glider_stream_period). So one would need to add additional logic to iterate over all possibilities, and perhaps choose the one that leads to lower population.

In the example with the p57 pseudo period 19 glider gun, the "units" would be triplets of gliders, and the ambiguity would be in whether the glider that is injected last into the output stream is the first, second, or third glider of the output "triplet".

The random posts threads should never have been allowed under the existing rule 4:

While rules 3, 4, and 5 aren't as strictly enforced in the sandbox, they are still present, and can be enforced as moderators see fit. Frankly, I think it should be obvious why "random posts" topics are not appropriate for these forums. We shouldn't need to have explicit rules against them.

I think the reason that random posts exist is because the rules are not obvious enough, so rule 4 should state that

I think the forum rules are sufficiently clear, for those people who are willing to follow the forum rules.

There are many different ways to have high-volume low-effort chitchat that doesn't constitute an interesting Life/CA-related discussion, doesn't contribute to knowledge or understanding of Conway's Life or other cellular automata, and/or distracts attention away from interesting topics which deserve more attention / brainstorming. It would be unreasonable to expect the forum rules to explicitly cover all ways of not following the rules.

Perhaps the purpose and scope of the sandbox should be clarified in the rules, but note that technically, according to the current rules, the only difference between the sandbox and the rest of the forums is that you don't always need to give a description for the patterns that you post in the sandbox. The rules as they're written do not give me the impression that the sandbox is a free-for-all.

In my opinion, the sandbox is a place where rules 3, 4, and 5 should only be loosely enforced. This allows users to discuss some topics tangential to CA (I consider all mathematics and computer science fair game), as well as to have a bit of fun with games, as long as they're CA-related (or mathematics/CS-related). This gives people practice with CA concepts, and could yield some interesting ideas through more free experimentation and discussion.

However, high-volume, off-topic discussion doesn't really benefit the forums and is too hard to moderate. There are other places on the internet that I believe would be better for those discussions.

I had a conversation with Sokwe on Discord, and I said that it should be fine if it only mentions people with CA contributions or forum users and only mentions discoveries or creations, because with these rules it would still be hard to for rule 1 violations or even just questionable posts to show up, but he said no, and I told him to try and find a example.
So now, can anyone find an example where “this person discovered this” can be at least questionable? I don’t need Sokwe to change the rules even if no one finds an example.

(I think it's at least as questionable as the question itself.)

Regarding the forum thread in question ( viewtopic.php?f=12&t=5003 ) I think such topics inviting people to post falsehoods are problematic, and mentioning other people in such context is further problematic. There's difference between a few people discussing some Life/CA-related topic of interest (which has good chances of leading to an interesting discussion), and a few people discussing each other (which is often problematic in practice).
