by "elementary" i mean one such that the linestretcher and lineater do not use any engines.

Elementary linestretchers and elementary lineeaters definitely do exist -- and as you guessed, Keith Amling had a lot to do with some of them. Here's a c/5 set:

Code: Select all

#C #N c/5 diagonal lineship, made out of

Heh, copied the wrong pattern. The links were good enough to allow a proper c/5 diagonal lineship to be deduced, made out of two elementary pieces:

I think those two gliders are 9 half-diagonals apart. (If they were moving on the same glider lane, they would be 0hd apart. One of two gliders needs to be moved 9hd to reach the lane of the other glider.)

No, in (1) I asked for a 5-glider synthesis that would produce the shown 4-glider synthesis. (Therefore it would be "a 5G synthesis of that particular 4G synthesis of the target pattern", and not just "a 5G synthesis of the target pattern".)

I checked the two kickback options, and even the 180-degree one is one tick away from working.

So I'm fairly sure that there is no 5G synthesis of that set of four gliders. It makes a good counterexample to a conjecture about always being able to add exactly one glider. A 180-degree kickback usually works to place the leading glider in a tandem pair, but not when the trailing glider is following on the same lane at the minimum distance.

The octo3g database doesn't have a lot of three-glider collisions that produce two clean output gliders (except for the various kickback cases that it records). It doesn't have any results for that tandem-glider pair, and the leading two colliding gliders have seven matches but none of them would allow the following gliders in those locations.

I see there is now a Help / Support category on the Forums. I think it would be beneficial to transfer some more threads here. Some suggestions for threads which may fit here.
  • Thread for advanced questions
  • Construction Challenges and Ideas
  • Thread for unsure discoveries
  • Unproven conjectures (maybe)
  • Intuitive understanding?
Additionally, while Thread for basic Non-CGOL questions and Thread for your Corderization Requests may fit here, they may be better left in Other Cellular Automata

I guess, in the spirit of the thread, my questions are: (1) what exactly should go in this new category, and (2) are these threads (and perhaps other threads not listed), better placed here or in their current spots?

EDIT: how does [ list ] work, as in the list above?

EDIT 2: I see there already has been some discussion about the forum category elsewhere.

Is there an odd-period non-trivial oscillator in life where strict volatility does not match volatility, but NOT because the sparkers/supporting oscillators (if any) have lower period (e.g. various p45 active regions supported by Pentadecathlons have lower strict volatility than normal volatility due to the supporting Pentadecathlons being pseudo-period with respect to the oscillator as a whole.)?

More generally, is there a non-trivial oscillator in life where the main unstable active region, and not any stable supporting sparkers or still-lifes, has cell(s) which repeat at periods lower than that of the oscillator (period n), but not at subperiod n/2 (as occurs with Gabriel's p138 or Twin Bees Shuttle, which have gutteroids)?

EDIT: Hassled region oscillators, rather than conduit-supported or gun-supported period-multiplication reactions, are more ideal.

EDIT 2:
confocaloid wrote: January 5th, 2025, 3:46 pm I'm not completely sure if I correctly understand the intended idea. There seems to be some confusion over what is the rotor of an oscillator.
The rotor is simply the set of all cells that change state at some point during the evolution of the oscillator.
EDIT 3:
confocaloid wrote: January 5th, 2025, 3:46 pm edit:

To put it explicitly, I think that situation is impossible, the way it is stated. The "true-period part of the rotor" must consist entirely of cells that oscillate at the full period of the oscillator. Therefore it cannot possibly have any cell oscillating at a subperiod.
Fixed the terminology of what is mean by "true-period part of the rotor". Is my question clearer/possible to answer now?

EDIT 4:
confocaloid wrote: January 5th, 2025, 3:46 pm edit 2: here is an odd-period oscillator in Life, where the strict volatility (0) does not match the volatility (approx. 0.57).
Any luck for nontrivial oscillators?

I'm not completely sure if I correctly understand the intended idea. There seems to be some confusion over what is the rotor of an oscillator.
The rotor is simply the set of all cells that change state at some point during the evolution of the oscillator.

The part "the p45 rotor" sounds like it cannot possibly contain any cells oscillating at periods other than 45 (the part of the rotor that consists of cells oscillating at p45). Therefore, it's impossible for a p45 oscillator to have a cell which oscillates at a subperiod because of "the p45 rotor"; such a cell must be outside of "the p45 rotor" as far as I see.

"Strict volatility does not match volatility" means that the rotor contains at least one cell which oscillates at a subperiod.

An even-period oscillator can have a gutteroid.

An odd-period oscillator on the square tiling cannot have a gutteroid, however, in principle nothing prevents a cell that would oscillate at n/3 or n/5 or n/7 etc. The lowest candidate periods are 9 (the subperiod must be 3), 15 (subperiod 3 or 5), 21 (subperiod 3 or 7), 25 (subperiod 5), 27 (subperiod 3 or 9).

While there are alive cells at T=0 that will be alive at T=19, neither of those cells actually oscillates with period 19.

In this case, for every cell that's alive both at T=0 and at T=19, there exists some t /= 0 such that that cell's state at T=t differs from that cell's state 19 ticks later (i.e. at T=t+19).

Look at the single marked cell below. It's easy to check that the marked cell is alive both in the shown phase and in the phase that appears 19 ticks later. However, there exists a different phase of the oscillator such that the same statement is no longer true for that phase. For example, the marked cell is dead at T=1 but alive at T=20, therefore the marked cell doesn't oscillate with period 19.

The main problem I see is that the title "p124 lumps of muck hassler" incorrectly suggests that the page is about period-124 LoM hasslers in general (any period-124 oscillators that are also LoM hasslers), while the page p124 lumps of muck hassler is actually about just one specific oscillator.

The topic declared in the title doesn't match the actual topic of the page. That is a problem.

Shuttles are indeed hasslers, there's no incorrectness in that part as far as I can tell.
