[R]Investigator (reactions, patterns, discussion)

Post by confocaloid »

This is a forum thread for discussing stuff found in "Investigator" versions of two-state cellular automata, including both StateInvestigator and <OCA>Investigator.
  • viewtopic.php?f=11&t=4009 "Extended Life Extensions" is related-but-different, both because that thread is focused on StateInvestigator, and because that thread also contains some discussion of other ways to "extend" Conway's Life.
  • viewtopic.php?f=7&t=6142 "[Rule]Investigator support in Golly" is about the built-in support in Golly 4.3 for the family.
  • viewtopic.php?f=9&t=6000 "[R]Investigator rule generator" gives scripts to generate .rule files, e.g. for older versions of Golly without built-in support.
The explanation of the cellstates, copied from the comments section in Rule:StateInvestigator:
Official explanation of the states of StateInvestigator v3.0 wrote:

Thanks for starting this. Let's see, I can't move CARuler's recent "Asteroids-Investigator" post to here from the Asteroids thread, because it's older than this thread and would show up ahead of the current first post.

I've moved it to the "CA Ruler's CA" thread. Here's a partial quote, of just the patterns with understandable labels. The first gun is period 18. The second gun shoots the same orthogonal spaceship as the p18 gun, but simultaneously in four directions at period 30.

The glider in rule "B4J3S23" can be reflected by a gray dot.
The reflector is colour-changing (citation needed).

Here is a way to support the 5c/26d wire pulse by dot sparks that should work for all even periods 22 and higher. It uses p2 cells. The dot sparks are produced by glider-to-spark converters.

I think it's interesting, because here the pulse only directly interacts with the produced (state-1) dot sparks, but doesn't directly interact with "special cells". Is there a solution (with the same property) that works for all sufficiently high periods (even or odd)?

Additionally, here the pulse moves within a "diagonal band" of width 22hd containing only state-0 and state-1 cells (no "special cells" within the band). Can this band be made wider?

Two-state seeds there tend to explode, but of course can be "contained". This seed lasts for over 10^6 ticks, before settling into three blocks and a p6 oscillator in the same frame:

These patterns settle into:
  • state-2 frame: a tub
  • state-3 frame: a blinker and a p90 glider shuttle that needs the frame to work
  • state-4 frame: unknown
  • state-5 frame: two blocks and a p6 oscillator after ~90 kiloticks
  • state-6 frame: a tub
  • state-7 frame: a block and a blinker
  • state-10 frame: two blocks, one of them touching the frame so that one of its cells oscillates
  • state-11 frame: two blocks and two p6 oscillators, one of them interacting with the frame
  • state-14 frame: a p6 oscillator
  • state-15 frame: unknown
  • state-16 frame: a p2 oscillation that needs the frame to work
  • state-17 frame: unknown
  • state-18 frame: a block, a blinker, a p6 oscillator and three dots that need the frame to survive
  • state-19 frame: two blocks and boundary-specific p4 oscillations
  • state-20 frame: a block and boundary-specific p4 oscillations
  • state-8, state-9, state-12, state-13 frames aren't shown due to causing growth into "outer space"; fate unknown

Here is a capped period-34683 "B-spaceship" gun in IntegralifeInvestigator. Can anyone find a lower-period gun? As far as I know, there are no known guns yet in the base two-state CA (B3/S23-j "Integralife").

This gun emits spaceships on two different lanes:
* one spaceship downwards (see generation 34407)
* six (!) spaceships to the right, all on the same lane but timed irregularly (see generations 3116, 8489, 12857, 19927, 24370, 34013)

Code: Select all

x = 71, y = 54, rule = B3/S23-jInvestigator

It is very easy to draw a line of orthogonally connected cells of some state. For a given CA, this is one of several obvious things to do during "early exploration". Unless such a line happens to evolve into some interesting object or lead to some remarkable reaction, it is non-notable and doesn't need to be posted at all. Posting such simple lines is extremely low-effort and unlikely to add anything of interest to other people.

[R]Investigator is well-known[1] for having lots and lots of easily-constructed oscillators relying on higher-numbered cellstates. Most such oscillators are non-notable and don't need to be posted. There are simply way too many similar oscillators in [R]Investigator to collect them all. Nobody is going to do all the record-keeping needed to determine when, how, who found a given oscillator. It is also very easy to "rediscover" them.

Unless your hand-drawn seed happens to produce something really remarkable, please do not post it at all.

No idea what period this is - it takes more than 40 million generations to settle at least:

Code: Select all

x = 13, y = 2, rule = B2/S34HInvestigator:T20,20

"Severed head" version of Figure Eight in the StateInvestigator of this rule, requiring only two eternal off cells to work

Code: Select all

x = 7, y = 7, rule = B3/S234cInvestigator
$.2A$.2A.A$4.EA$2.AEA.A$3.A.A$4.A!
EDIT: Two Eternal On cells work to reduce it further. Neither pattern works in B3/S23Investigator

Code: Select all

x = 5, y = 5, rule = B3/S234cInvestigator
2A$2A.A$3.ED$.AEA$2.D!
EDIT by dvgrn: moved out of the B3/S234c thread, since the patterns don't work in B3/S234c. Except in rare cases where there's some hope of replacing nonstandard cells by catalysts, StateInvestigator patterns are too likely to cause clutter. There are probably incredible numbers of new StateInvestigator guns and oscillators and so on in every interesting two-state rule. Posting them in the dedicated threads for that rule could easily overwhelm the legitimate content.

Thanks! I realized after posting that it was probably off-topic in the thread, but it was too late to move it and I didn't known where was the best place for it.
Currently working to improve Life's guns and work on updating SKOPs and Isotropic rules most similar to B3/S23 to Life standards. Will get software to begin searches eventually.
