Rulegolf Request Thread

This is a thread for rulegolf requests.
To start:
Try to combine Traffic Flow and Pi Puffer Life, keeping the failed pi puffer while still having Traffic Flow-like SLs and/or being relatively dense.
superstrings, fuses, waves, wicks, and agars are cool

I think this thread is slightly broader than the "taming" thread, so I'm inclined to leave it for now.

this is unorthodox but can you tame this R2 alternating generations rule while keeping the common rakes?

I made several attempts to find a "well-behaved enough for soup searching" cellular automaton supporting this p661 oscillator (discovered by FWKnightship in b356s23/D8_1_spaceinvaders_stdin):

I think this oscillator remains endemic to this CA within several other spaces:

  • "range-1 Moore, range-2 saltire" (2 x 5 x 9 = 90 distinguishable fully-specified conditions)
  • "range-1 Moore, range-3 cross" (2 x 5 x 9 = 90 distinguishable fully-specified conditions)
  • "range-1 Moore, range-3 saltire" (2 x 5 x 9 = 90 distinguishable fully-specified conditions)
  • "range-1 orthogonal, range-1 diagonal, range-2 cross" (2 x 5 x 5 x 5 = 250 distinguishable fully-specified conditions)
  • "range-1 orthogonal, range-1 diagonal, range-2 saltire" (2 x 5 x 5 x 5 = 250 distinguishable fully-specified conditions)
  • "range-1 orthogonal, range-1 diagonal, range-3 cross" (2 x 5 x 5 x 5 = 250 distinguishable fully-specified conditions)
Here is a space where the oscillator is no longer endemic. The oscillator exists in eight CA within this space, however, neither of them seems "well-behaved" enough for soup searching:

Simplicity and readability. A simpler, more lightweight CA definition is more satisfying, compared to a detailed specification needing a separate file. (Ideally, there would be a human-readable definition of the rules.)

For this puzzle, the entire space "all two-state isotropic cellular automata with range-2 Moore neighbourhood" feels way too big.

The weighted neighbourhood notation is simpler (single-line, supported in Golly and LifeViewer), and it allows to explore many different spaces, small and large.

I'm not really looking for "more possibilities" at the expense of everything else. There are too many possible fully-detailed ways to specify a two-state isotropic cellular automaton with range-2 Moore neighbourhood. And the majority of those cellular automata doesn't have any concise, human-readable, intuitively understandable description at all. As I already wrote, I think the full space is way too big to be interesting.

Contrast with (for example) Life-like CA, where every single cellular automaton (out of 2^18 = 262144 possibilities) admits a reasonably short, human-readable, intuitively understandable description. Just write
"the neighbours of a cell are the four orthogonally adjacent cells and the four diagonally adjacent cells; a cell is born in the next generation if it is currently dead and has precisely <birth-conditions-list> alive neighbours; a cell survives in the next generation if it is currently alive and has precisely <survival-conditions-list> alive neighbours."
For example, HighLife can be defined in a human-readable way as follows:
"the neighbours of a cell are the four orthogonally adjacent cells and the four diagonally adjacent cells; a cell is born in the next generation if it is currently dead and has precisely 3 or 6 alive neighbours; a cell survives in the next generation if it is currently alive and has precisely 2 or 3 alive neighbours."
The bottom line here is that cellular automata with simpler definitions are preferable.

In addition to simpler definitions for many interesting range-2 cellular automata, weighted neighbourhoods allow to define many interesting CA with a range 3 (or higher) neighbourhood. That obviously goes beyond what a "range-2 emulator" could possibly do (even if emulation worked correctly and conveniently enough for range 2 cellular automata to begin with).

No, "semitotalistic" usually means the exact same thing as "outer-totalistic". So "range-1 2-state Moore semitotalistic" is just the space of 2^18 Life-like cellular automata.

Since you mentioned the number 2^50 instead, my guess is that you actually meant something different. Possibly you meant the space which can be defined by the following weighted neighbourhood:

It features a stable splitter for the box, a stable reflector for the glider, a two-box synthesis for the glider, a p24 glider loop oscillator, a p19 box gun, and currently not much else. -Not explosive if it's possible.

In particular, the p6 knightship cannot exist in any cellular automaton of that type, because it becomes "self-contradictory": out of two marked alive cells below (in two different phases of the knightship), one must survive in the next generation and the other must die in the next generation, but the rules cannot prescribe that, because both cells are in the same condition as far as can be specified with fully-symmetric weighted neighbourhoods.
In both cases, the "maximally detailed" condition of the marked cell is:
The cell is currently alive,
and it has precisely three alive range-1 orthogonal neighbours,
and it has precisely two alive range-1 diagonal neighbours,
and it has precisely one alive "knight's move" neighbour,
and it doesn't have any other alive neighbours apart from that.
