I don't really get what "The Exploded Toad" is supposed to mean (and the post does not help with understanding that, either).

More importantly, I don't understand the purpose of this forum thread (and the posts here do not help with understanding that, either). Is this a duplicate of viewtopic.php?f=12&t=493?

Clearly both of them aren't still lifes due to B3ej and D4y:

OK ok this thread is about Pattern Recognition

which will be a great help if we can spot it in the Morphology

leading to new catalysts and so forth

I did not want to spoil the fun

but the super serious guys are all over this one

Code: Select all

x = 14, y = 13, rule = B3/S23
3o7b3o$o2bo6b4o$b3o7b3o8$2o8b2o$obo7b3o$b2o8b2o!
adding the Domino to the Two-Tail Ship gives the Exploded Toad, otherwise Lumps-of-Muck

just like adding the Dot to a Ship gives the Exploded Ship

the Two-Hive Ship is a Predecessor

for the famous reaction that emits twelve Gliders

Life Lexicon gives this two-tail predecessor for Gliders-by-the-Dozen

Code: Select all

x = 5, y = 3, rule = B3/S23
2o2bo$o3bo$o2b2o!
the Two-Hive Ship is an intermediate phase...

this is supposed to be a fun thing

but if enough people are serious about it, we will be spotting a lot of useful stuff !

Being able to "see" known patterns, subpatterns, components can help when one is exploring CGoL/CA.
(It becomes much easier to have fun playing with possibilities, when one can see the possibilities.)

There is no incompatibility at all between something being fun, and the same thing being "useful" or "important" in some way. However, there should be some agreement on the rules, and there should be some shared understanding. Otherwise things quickly stop being fun.
The first post basically just said "the exploded toad", without any explanations. But that's neither a commonly understood CGoL/CA-related phrase nor defined in the post.
It isn't fun to have to guess the purpose of a thread. It isn't fun to have to guess the meaning of an unclear/confusing forum post. Some phrases, ideas, ground rules, things need to be defined, explained, illustrated, before any kind of fun becomes possible.

Manipulations like "adding a domino" or "adding a dot" can appear to be interesting at first. However, unless the added domino/dot could somehow be produced by a reaction arriving within the CGoL universe, most such manipulations aren't particularly interesting for "new catalysts and so forth".

Sparker oscillators can produce dots or dominoes, and those sparks can be used to perturb various reactions. However, no sparker can possibly insert a dot in the middle of the ship still life in that way.

but they are interim phases in some reactions none-the-less

if you do not think this has any useful potential then let's just delete it

I've seen this spark often enough, and it doesn't have a name yet. Once the later post showed exactly what it was, I have no problem with that name.

I think the situation is mostly the same as with earlier "LL spark" etc.

The spark is there, but it is unclear why this particular spark would deserve a name. Is it particularly useful as a spark? Can it perturb reactions in an unique way that no simpler spark can do?

Okay, I'll try taking out those two entries. Someone can always restore them if there's some unexpected groundswell of opposition to the removal. (I find that hard to imagine, but my imagination is kind of limited sometimes.)

Ah, yes, the well-known LL spark and evil-Muppet spark... (no, I didn't really recognize them, and I can't claim that those are their traditional names).
