Actually, they're similar enough to allow a stably-supported monomer of that p21 honey farm hassler to be built:

Code: Select all

x = 25, y = 23, rule = B3/S23

o$10bo3b2o2b2o$10b2o!
Should this p21 HF hassler be added to the Period-21 honey farm hasslers? It has a fairly small population and BB, though it is similar to two HF hasslers already in there.
Currently working to improve Life's guns and work on updating SKOPs and Isotropic rules most similar to B3/S23 to Life standards. Will get software to begin searches eventually.

All three variations could flock together:

Which "Koenig" discovered the Koenig's Colourised Life? Is it Hkoenig?
The page named "Koenig" was blank.

I think that is the most logical layout, but then the duplicate HF hasslers already in there would need to be deleted to avoid repeats.

Not saying that's a terrible problem, just something to consider when citing the original posts these oscillators came from.

The image at File:Spaceship_ford_circles.png says that no 3c/7's are known, despite there being known 3c/7 spaceships. Can someone edit that image to account for the new discoveries?

The 'Oscillator periods' section in the 'LifeWiki:Game_of_Life_Status_page' can be simplified.

The green and yellow descriptions, and even the table itself are unnecessary.

They could be replaced by a simple statement like the following:

Oscillators are known for all periods. For each period, an oscillator is known having at least one cell which oscillates at the full period.

How should it be noted that all 3 were discovered at different times?

I think one could add an embedded viewer or embedded viewers with descriptions and credits, and add footnotes linking to the forum posts where those patterns were first posted.

Unrelated to my last suggestion: Should there be a LifeWiki page for 4diagonal? There are a lot of interesting things in that rule: Super-small C/7, two C/17s, small p41 glider gun, p32 LOM hassler supported only by blocks, statorless P90 (Strictly Volatile?), infinite growth based on the Century, failed reflectorless rotating herschel that can be supported and form a gun.

Edit: Pattern collection if it helps (note TL hasslers trigger B4c, so there are a lot of periods of TL hasslers not shown here that work) - Left side are patterns which don't work/evolve differently in B34c/S234c

Code: Select all

x = 486, y = 320, rule = B34c/S23

I think the CA "B34c/S234c" is more interesting, and has more chances to be shown notable in the sense of LW:NB, compared to "B34c/S23": https://catagolue.hatsya.com/census/b34cs234c

To the question, I think my answer is "No", unless someone is willing to put in all the effort to prove notability of that particular cellular automaton (including collecting and adding links to available sources related to exploring it). If the idea is just to create a short stub, without going all the way through and documenting the existing knowledge about B34c/S23 in a clear human-readable way, then it is better to avoid creating a page at all. Incomplete abandoned stubs can (and often do) mislead instead of helping.

Where did all of the other pre-pulsar hasslers go?

Pre-pulsar hasslers only shows a P13 also on the TL page, though there are other periods listed in the Known Periods box.

Long time to provide a rebuttal, but I just remembered that one notable feature of 4diagonal is that it was proven omniperiodic BEFORE life was (8 days before according to P1GG's post from the 13th, & the first 1tfl rule to be proven omniperiodic), whereas B34c/S234c was not provably omniperiodic until the discovery of Honey Ring.

Currently working to improve Life's guns and work on updating SKOPs and Isotropic rules most similar to B3/S23 to Life standards. Will get software to begin searches eventually.

They didn't go anywhere. They were never there. I tried to get people to build out the page, but nobody has done it so far.

Also, I moved your post to the LifeWiki discussion forum.

The first embedded viewer in https://conwaylife.com/w/index.php?titl ... did=156869 currently has a very long caption, which spans multiple lines and contains several enforced linebreaks.

I suggest instead to put the viewer into a new section named "Catalyst variants" (located immediately after the lead section), and to move the long explanatory text away from the viewer caption and into the section text (getting rid of the HTML linebreaks as well).
The viewer caption should be kept reasonably short, and ideally single-line, for example just "Four Snark catalyst variants".

Also, the edit https://conwaylife.com/w/index.php?titl ... did=156869 added a misspelling (it's != its), which happened repeatedly in multiple other pages as well.

In this set of changes, a couple patterns which were using RLE files (pname=p40honeyfarmhassler4 and pname=p42honeyfarmshuttle) now have inline RLE patterns but did not remove the pname lines, nor did they update the RLE files. I'd prefer the latter, but the current situation is just weird and this has happened multiple times to other files.

Agree, that should be fixed.
Also in the same linked diff, a couple of ZOOMs were changed away from even values, and to odd values.
Assuming THUMBSIZE 2 (which is the case there), all ZOOM values should be even, to avoid undesirable distortions in the size of cells and/or grid lines.
In general, ZOOM should be a multiple of THUMBSIZE.

Number of cells in "Snark" pattern

Post by patowen95 »

I believe the "Snark" page needs a few corrections. At some point, the "heart" of the Snark was 34 bits, but the Wiki page now defaults to 31 bits in the description as well as in the animation in the information card. However, this means that the pattern as a whole has 49 cells.

However, the information card states that the pattern has 52 cells, and the static image still shows the 52-cell version. In addition, this page does not show up in the "Patterns with 49 cells" category, but it does show up in "Patterns with 52 cells". For discoverability, ideally, it would show up in both, but if it can only show up in one, I believe 49 is preferred.

(I had already asked something similar in viewtopic.php?p=199483#p199486, but I believe this is a better place for this question)

Is there a good reason why the infobox needs to tell any population value at all for the Snark?
LifeWiki:Pattern pages currently says
c (optional) The number of live cells in the pattern.[clarification needed for conduits]
A conduit may not have any well-defined population, because there can be multiple variants of the conduit (each of which is useful in some situations) with different properties.
In other words, a conduit is not just a specific pattern, but instead a set of patterns which can be considered "functionally equivalent".

The main reason to report the number of cells of a conduit or reflector would be discoverability, since counting cells can narrow down a pattern search, although the ambiguity makes it maybe not worth it. I could, for instance, instead just count the number of cells in one of the rarer still lives, and hopefully the page for that still life will link to the page for the conduit or reflector.

I'd expect we'd still want things to be consistent on that page to avoid confusing new readers.

As a side note, are reflectors a type of conduit? The wiki seems to consider these to be fully separate concepts.

Reflectors are special in several ways. There is one input object and one output object. The input and the output are the same spaceship, except the output spaceship moves in a different direction (i.e. is reflected).

In general, a conduit can consume any kind of active object (not necessarily spaceship), and can produce any kind(s) of active object(s).

Sometimes a property is only well-defined for some (but not all) types of conduits. For example, when either the input or an output (or both) is a spaceship, it becomes impossible to measure the "step" of the conduit, because there is no single natural choice for the location of the spaceship. The conduit Fx77 has step 77 ticks, the conduit R64 has step 64 ticks, but the Snark doesn't have any step at all.

I think the most consistent and helpful choice would be to avoid claiming any "population" for conduits at all. The Snark has multiple variants (including variants of the large catalyst, replacements of the eater 1s, welds with other conduits). A conduit is incomplete, and is meant to be connected to/combined with other components in a pattern. Some bits can often be shared between different conduits connected to each other. That means "the population of a single conduit" is not really well-defined.

That makes sense to me. My main counterargument is that, if an example image is shown, giving the bounding box and number of cells of that image in particular seems like a nice extra piece of information. There's probably a larger discussion on this somewhere between many pages, but my opinion is that if a fact card shows a picture of a pattern (possibly in action while interacting with something else), providing the number of cells and bounding box of that picture is better for the reader than omitting it entirely. Rather than being a question of "right" vs "wrong", if I view it as a question of "useful" vs "useless", I would consider this information useful enough to keep. If we want to be strictly accurate, one option could be an asterisk with fine-print with all the caveats you mention.

Regardless, what are your thoughts on the other edit suggestion, which is making the static PNG match the LifeViewer image. Although both of these images are a valid "Snark", I think it's reasonable to expect that a "View static image" button below an animation would show the exact same pattern.
