Neography, constructed alphabets, fanmade alphabets and symbolic ciphers: Documentation

Post by Citation needed »

The Neography Wiki managers asked to temporarily (sorry for splitting infinitives) store the articles on LifeWiki forum.
You can search using the search bar above.

EDIT: We are very sorry to tell you that Neography Wiki on Miraheze lost a lawsuit and went bankrupt. We are now putting the entire documentation of each alphabet/cipher here however possible. (September 2024)
This thread is for storing information on alternative writing systems and symbolic ciphers. If you are interested, you may download this thread.

If you are Chinese, please read this disclaimer.

Extra images that does not contain documentation will go here.

The index is not yet available.

Click "SHOW IN VIEWER" to show the pattern.

Unfortunately, the "Secret codes" thread was locked.

You can use some of these fonts to write your username.

Also, please read this question.

Re: Neography - Hangulized English

Post by Citation needed »

Hangulized English (hangulizedenglish.htm)

Code: Select all

Hangulized English is a way of using Hangul to write English, devised by Michael Chen. It is phonetic, with one letter for each sound. To represent the extra consonants English has that Korean lacks, Hangulized English incorporates certain archaic letters and creates new double letters. In the featural spirit of Hangul, vowels are assigned primarily based on where in the mouth they are pronounced, rather than how English spelling typically represents them.

The vowels here are based on Standard North American English with the father-bother and cot-caught mergers.

Letters
The letters are assembled into syllable blocks, similar to Korean syllables.

Unicode workaround
Sadly, Unicode doesn't support the letter <tt>I</tt> ("I" in "India") and the letter for some of the diphthongs and thus HTML inline charts may be needed.

Coincidentally, it appears to be the same as the word for "Google" in Korean. However, it is obvious that Hangulized English is not Korean.]]

Phoneme is a distinct meaningful unit of speech sound. Phonemes are broader than phones: usually multiple phones are perceived as the same phoneme within a language (such as the light and dark "L" in English). Conventionally written in slashes (/).

Hookscript

Code: Select all

Hookscript is an alternative way of writing English devised by Mathew Gordon, and slightly inspired by the Westonian script.

The script consists of 15 letters and two modifiers. The voice modifier, a dot above the letter (Unicode decimal: 775), makes an unvoiced letter voiced, and the vowel modifier, a macron (Unicode decimal: 772), makes the letter a vowel. For example, s = [s], ṡ = [z], and s̄ = [æ].<br/>Affricates and diphthongs are formed using digraphs.citation needed

Hookscript is designed to write American English, but could be used to write other varieties of English, and possibly other languages.

Re: Neography - Gernreich

Post by Citation needed »

Gernreich

Code: Select all

Gernreich is an alternative alphabet for English invented by Michael Carnright when he was 14. The letters are like building blocks which are connected together to make words, which in turn can be connected together to make sentences. Michael usually uses graph paper to write this alphabet.

Words can be written separately or as part of a continuous line. When written as a continuous line, care needs to be taken to ensure that the line doesn't cross itself.

: This page is under construction.

Trivia
* It was once conjectured that every letter string can be written in Gernreich without crossing. However, this conjecture was quickly proven to be false (consider the strings "qxq" and "zjz").

What Neography Wiki? I can't seem to find such a website, at least not one that includes the articles you're posting here. And why are you posting these articles on the forums of a completely unrelated website? Most wikis have a way to download their contents. Why not just download the whole wiki and keep a local copy?

Dotsies

Designed by: Craig Muth
Omniglot filename: dotsies.htm

Dotsies is an alphabet that uses dots instead of letters. It was invented by Craig Muth and is optimized for reading. The letters in each word smoosh together, so words look like shapes. Each letter has 5 dots arranged vertically that are either on or off (black or white). It currently has a mapping for English.

THE MOST COMMON CONSONANT IS THE T. GOODBYE T.

OK, WE'VE GOTTEN RID OF THE THREE MOST COMMON LETTERS.

THE FOURTH MOST COMMON LETTER IS THE O.

IF YOU GOT THIS FAR YOU ARE DOING REALLY WELL!

ONLY TWO MORE, AND HALF OF ALL THE LETTERS WILL BE HIDDEN!

THAT'S BECAUSE THE SIX MOST COMMON LETTERS OCCUR HALF THE TIME.

LETTERS I AND N ARE NEXT. THAT WASN'T TOO BAD, RIGHT?
