How do I stop an LLSSS search if a complete result is found? For example, I want to terminate this wide c/2o search as soon as 64P2H1V0 is found:

Presumably you mean in an automatic sense for which there is as of yet nothing. If you're willing to make code changes you can find the printing of such results, at least for the zero ends, for fixed board searches, is near the bottom of src/llsss/state.rs and any code reaching an added "panic!();" line would stop.

Also, I didn't find a notice when a complete ship was found.

EDIT: Can't do a forward search that should generate a LWSS. Sideways search with 7 question marksalong the bottom also panics.

I'm having an issue of my own: I'm having trouble setting up a simple recentering s2s search (e.g., c/3o or 2c/4o) with no starting partial. My only goal is to find some spaceships in Life-like CA.

By default LLSSS extends the sides of the pattern ("edges") with your picture (where there is one anyway) and when it falls off the end of that grid, with zeros. For a search in an agar (as is required for all B0 searches) you're going to want to tell it to extend the edges differently, e.g. by repeating the cycle of W rows. In this case I believe the agar cycle is 2 W rows long (in c2-f2b geometry W=T and so this amounts to saying the agar is p2) and I believe the search you intend can be run with `--left-edge cycle:2 --right-edge cycle:2`. If you had a more interesting start with a non-agar section of edge you could do `pic:cycle:2` for "my picture but then last 2 W rows cycled after that".

I should also note that this search is not exhaustive for this width as it is forced to have its first disagreement with the agar in an off generation. WCAF parameters can be mucked with to make it allow changes in either the first or the second row or you could just also run the other search with a complementary input file (swap periods and asterisks). These phasing issues make WAO and WCAF searches for nonzero starts (wicks, waves, agar backgrounds, etc.) particularly tricky.

For "no starting partial" you've got two choices: WCAF and WAO. I'm gonna sketch inputs and commands for 2c/4 and assume you can work out c/3 from that.

Most of the search should look familiar for recentering, it's just the new `--filters wcaf` that will strip the search as it goes of parts which it can prove are not used in any partial which is non-looped (non-zero) in the first W row.

Note the extra W row in the input file (to specify what not to match in the first W row of the search that replaces it). Other arguments that differ from normal recentering:

(*) `00` "top pad" after input file. How many W rows to strip from input file bottom, analogous to "top pad" in other searches. I used to use it to run a bunch of differently-phased searches from the same extra-long input file but with improved editor skills and/or grid-tool I always generate separate input files these days and I have actually removed this argument as of current `master` (or rather made it default 0 and behind an explicit `--top-pad`).

(*) `--wao-left-pad 00 --wao-right-pad 00`. These influence the windows WAO uses to decide "where" the first error went. They default to 1. The bigger they are the more context is considered and the bigger the total search therefore is, but the more WAO indexes there thus are and so the more splittable the search is. For a search like this there is only one index no matter what so extra context and bigger search is strictly a waste.

(*) `--wao-idx ALL`. Equivalent here to `--wao-idx 00` since there is just the one. By habit I run `ALL` unless I'm specifically going to dump out the number and carefully run distinct searches.



Either way you might consider adding `odd`, and `even` to ends to get any symmetric results earlier. For 2c/4 you might also consider `pd_lite:2` or the like (as c/2 is often more solvable), although it's likely gonna have a bunch of useless hits at the beginning, especially if serious c/2 s2s partials exist. E.g. `--ends zero,odd,even,pd_lite:2`. For 2c/4 you might also consider gse/gso ends but I realize they are not yet available without a recompile. I will go add them and you can decide between maybe finding such results earlier and having to wait for a recompile.



EDIT: "gso" and "gse" ends added in `075a0cef5010` and just pushed to codeberg. If you're going to update take care to remove the "00" top pad above.

That didn't stop the search when the search space was exhausted with nonempty front row. I want to ensure that the first row of question marks is nonempty in generation 0.

Oh shoot, that's true and "wcaf" is not doing the right thing. "wcaf" here is short for "wcaf:1:4:5" which is pruning spines where the [4, 5) W rows (i.e. just 4, i.e. "the fifth") all match 1 W row back. As this agar has W period 2 we want "wcaf:2:4:5" which "wcaf:2" is also short for. Run with "--filters wcaf:2" instead this input file stops immediately (and based on unlimited WAO searches I believe no c/2 pattern can actually start in this phase). With "wcaf:2" instead the complementary input file (with periods and asterisks switched) does something more sensible (finds middling length partials but eventually stops).

Is this a version more recent than the removal of the mandatory "top pad" argument? The clap usage suggests it is in which case you should remove the "00" after the input file (I did say this somewhere above but I know I said quite a bit). I know this sort of breaking change in arguments sucks and is confusing but I've been running with nothing but 00 for months and months now and it seemed silly to continue.

I may look more closely at this when I'm not running benchmarking that I don't want to disturb, but it is likely a known issue with WCAF. Namely, that while WCAF removes vertical strips of state ("spines") that are not usable in what it considers an interesting partial, neither partial display ("shortest" or "random") knows anything about that and so can still construct partials that have all zeros first rows. In fixed board searches sometimes eventually all possible partials will have a nonzero first row but for a recentering search like this the all zero spine is always going to remain in the state.

Your experience and taste may vary, but if I am investigating a speed/rule combo and hope for a quick/lucky positive result I will usually use recentering WAO and if I like some partials maybe some other search type to extend/solve them. In WAO searches there are bits of invisible state at the top of each spine that force every valid partial to contain a nonzero ("wrong answer") in the first row and so at a minimum these partials are less confusing.

EDIT: I dug up another computer to run on and have run the above through mid_steps=16 which all terminated. 17 is still running, but I find it plausible to believe that the only problem here is the known issue of partials displays knowing nothing about filters.

I know these partials starting with zero seem to suggest inefficiency but I believe they're all equally eligible to be present in the equivalent WAO search. In fact, in WAO searches, each bcol entry is possible/likely to be present twice due to distinct values of those invisible roots so in a sense the WAO searches are less efficient. Unfortunately there is also a problem of l2r/r2l expansion order being influenced by exact col sizes and then influencing what can be found and so either (WCAF/WAO) could have bits the other does not due to a difference of expansion order. This same problem (expansion order affecting what can be found) has plagued me from day one and is responsible for one of the worst debugging events I have ever endured, trying to figure out why a search I had run found several iterations of a cycle but then terminated (not finding the next one). Also unfortunately I have absolutely nothing even resembling a working idea about how to limit searches to exactly what we think of a given number of mid_steps as representing rather than the slightly funky upper bound currently implemented.

EDIT2: I ran a few more searches to compare WAO and WCAF for the same mid_steps and WAO searches generally got somewhat less deep. A possible explanation is that due to mismatching roots there may be places where WCAF considers two vertical strips the same and finds more results where WAO would not. I'm not particularly worried about a correctness bug as there are many reasons why the searches are not exactly equal anyway. I guess I would suggest running them both to get a taste and searching with whichever one you like better.

For me WAO has a lot to recommend it: it's more battle-tested (WCAF was not available for recentering originally), partials displays are better, it works for cycles that are not aligned (e.g. slanted wicks or waves), and it can break searches up by "WAO index" (i.e. where they first mismatch the cycle) to force actually engaging the prompt. It's hard to want to do a bunch of troublesome benchmarking to figure out if WCAF is faster (and faster enough) per depth reached to switch to it on projects that could use it instead.

Oh shoot, that's true and "wcaf" is not doing the right thing. "wcaf" here is short for "wcaf:1:4:5" which is pruning spines where the [4, 5) W rows (i.e. just 4, i.e. "the fifth") all match 1 W row back. As this agar has W period 2 we want "wcaf:2:4:5" which "wcaf:2" is also short for. Run with "--filters wcaf:2" instead this input file stops immediately (and based on unlimited WAO searches I believe no c/2 pattern can actually start in this phase). With "wcaf:2" instead the complementary input file (with periods and asterisks switched) does something more sensible (finds middling length partials but eventually stops).
I've also just realized that the default `--end zero` is not going to do anything useful here. See a previous post about strobing rules and almost certainly add `--ends s_periodic:0:0:2`. If you end up buried in p2 wickerstretchers (and you don't like that), come back here and we can get you set up with the "nfa" ends to find proper ships.

The problem I'm getting destroyed by is that nearly all search lines are dying by reaching 2^32 entries in a bcol and then I have to stop and rerun them with BIDX=usize which takes up twice as much memory and so they end quickly anyway. I have finally sketched a version of the code that has some form of abstraction for col storage and so can switch (at compile time) between old BIDX=u32, old BIDX=usize, and a new fancier storage that will store in u32s but then will pack any overflown bits separately (so if the bcol requires e.g. 34 bit indices then you get one u32 plus 2/64 of a u64 to store each).

Among the problems with this are: I'm worried the abstraction will cost something, I'm worried the new implementation has bugs (it's very hard to test, what with needing >2^32 size bcol to give it a real battle test), I'm worried the new implementation will be slow even ignoring abstraction cost, etc. It's abstracted over the size of the "lower" bits which will be u32 in real use but I did give it some decent testing (for correctness) with u8 and u16 lower bits. I'm still worried there could be a bug that somehow only happens for u32 lower bits but of course I cannot actually imagine/find it. I'm just now starting some benchmark and proper testing searches (which may reach 2^32 size bcols) on the 1 TB machine and we'll see how it goes.
After a wild amount of benchmarking, guesswork, and optimization I think I understand some of the differences and might have this close to under control. The benchmarking is just too high-variance to be as certain as I'd like, but I believe the abstraction performance loss and jcol v2 performance loss (for "small" searches where it isn't packing overflow bits) have both been reduced to something much, much lower (than the +15-20% or so each of them had been originally), at least for typical searches, at least in the long run, at least on average, at least on the machine I was doing all my benchmarking on (the new one). I am hesitant to even try to put numbers on it, but both are now close enough that I have even seen many searches come out the other way (abstracted beating unabstracted or jcol v2 beating full u32 jcols) which is presumably just variance dominating signal. Of course once jcol v2 switches to packing overflow bits performance is going to get worse but that's expected and acceptable.

I think I am convinced enough to accept it after running one final test which will probably take a week or two: running a giant, giant seeds 3c/5 search with both old unabstracted BIDX=usize and the new jcol v2. Assuming all the intermediate numbers match and the times are anything short of awful I will ship it, probably gated behind a compile-time environment variable so default builds will still get the old "full u32" behavior.

I will certainly post more details when/if I ship it, although I assume I'm gonna be the only one enabling it, at least until Moore's law catches up.

Intermediate numbers do all match so I'm shipping this. The final testing run was 3c/5 asymmetric WAO from zeros with mid_steps=56. The jcol v2 run took 3.9 days and 327 GB memory. At that peak it was at one bit overflow as it had indicated earlier by:

When it is using overflow bits it will report separate "high_bits" and "low_bits" parts of memory and you can really see the savings e.g. "col.high_bits 2.89 GB, col.low_bits 92.37 GB" at peak which would have been 2x92.37 GB instead with BIDX=usize.

By default builds will still get `JcolFull<u32>` which is the old behavior (but abstracted). Setting environment variable `LLSSS_JCOL_V2=true` will get `JcolV2<u32>` instead although there is little reason to do this unless you have a lot of memory or a very, very weird search.

Hopefully with this I'll be able to get back to a more regular regimen of running searches.

The existence of "almost half planes" like that means LLSSS would not be able to rule out c/2 patterns in a normal (c2-f2b) geometry search. I do however agree the partials are suspicious as heck and an arbitrary width search run with geometry "raw:1:0:2:0:-1:2:0:0:1" (c/2 like f2b but with U=X+2T so it slants diagonally) exhaustively shows there are no "almost half planes" at that angle, and thus no finite ships (at least barring bugs). I do generally believe this approach is valid and the code works, it's just always a little weird to see a problem that went poorly in a normal geometry solved so quickly in what is usually a worse one. Similar slanted searches for B3/S23 find what I expect, just more slowly and painfully since the geometry is generally worse.

As a second disproof, plain c2-s2s searches of arbitrary width also fail quickly. Longest partial:

I would like to use LLSSS to try to determine if any B23 rules support period-2 c/2 orthogonal ships. To disprove that a rule has such ships, would the following inputs be valid?

All three provided inputs and commands I believe to be correct. If I were unsure of a setup like that I would probably try to run in a rule where there are known results (e.g. S23/B3) and if you have to fewer mid_steps ("XX" is a lot, although even with that you can see partials here which look correct).

The c2-b2f input file is one W row longer than it needs to be although there is no harm for this search. The wacky twisted geometry might or might not be longer than it needs to be but I doubt either of us cares enough to verify. Perhaps I should make a geometry info subcommand to compute U and W overlap sizes...

Close. The first three specify U in XYT coordinates as you've suggested. The second three specify V (the vector that wraps) and the last three specify W (the direction the search builds in).

The "UWI" in "to-uwi" and "from-uwi" is not quite the same thing. The problem with trying to view a file in UVW coordinates (really it would be UWV as V is the bounded/wrapped one) is that they can be fractions and the valid points (which are integers in XYT) are not necessarily an axis-aligned lattice so it would be very gappy. UWI is much weirder to explain but generally handles well for my horrible grid editing adventures: the first coordinate is the floor of the U coordinate, the second W is the floor of the W coordinate and the third coordinate (which corresponds to T/generation in the usual view) is the build order within a tile (all the fractional UVW values are sorted, by default in WVU order (sorted by fractional W, ties broken by fractional V, ties broken by fractional U)).

Yep, and that sort of slanted U=X+2T can be great way to eliminate rules with pesky "almost half planes" in simpler geometries.

Perhaps you already know and have left it unsaid, but I think most searches, even exhaustion searches like this, will run better f2b. Consider something like 2c/3 in S23/B3. Run b2f there are endless, endless partials but of course they can never complete. I think even 2c/3 s2s will have endless partials but when you run it f2b it terminates quickly.

I'd probably start with c2-f2b, kicking any rules that aren't eliminated quickly to progressively more desperate geometries (c2-s2s, c2-b2f, etc.) and then if it seems like there are few enough uneliminated stragglers sort through them by hand (searching for positive results or trying to pick more special case geometries like the U=X+2T above).

I am extremely interested to hear how this project goes so please do let us know, especially if you find anything or if you find any difficult to eliminate geometries.

EDIT: I was thinking some more about this and projects like this and thought I should mention LLSSS_MAX_TABLE_SIZE. If you're going to run rules with low time limits (which for 16K rules you might have to) you might want to set it lower to not waste a bunch of time computing larger rule check tables to try to speed up a main search that won't run for long anyway. Of course you should experiment, but I believe 15 will be quite fast (to precompile) and 9 or so would be strictly fastest (limited below by CA neighborhood size, sort of). Either way the effects should be obvious in the logging at the beginning about these tables.

EDIT2: You might also benefit from forcing rayon (the parallelism library) to a single thread and doing your own parallelism over rules. Google says RAYON_NUM_THREADS=1. It's likely we could do even better with actual code changes to run everything on main thread which is an idea I've toyed with allowing at compile time but I couldn't really think of a good way to do it (abstracting/capturing the entire rayon API the code uses is a lot) and it's not something I'd use often. If you try any of this I would definitely benchmark it before committing the project to it.

This is true in most B3 rules, but patterns in B23 rules tend to expand quickly, so viable sides and back ends are rare. In the tests I've done so far, s2s seems to be the most likely to complete, but sometimes a rule that won't complete with s2s will complete with b2f. All f2b searches I tried quickly became bogged down with endless partial results.

Thanks. I must admit that the UVW stuff is probably the hardest part for me to understand. The slanted example you posted above won't be useful in this case, because it's f2b-like. A slanted b2f-like search would be more useful. I think in this case it's enough to flip W to go in the opposite direction (?) with "raw:1:0:2:0:-1:2:0:0:-1". Then the search setup is

Of course speculation is no substitute for empiricism and it sounds like you are very much on top of it. I guess it makes a kind of sense that B2 searches might have more trouble dying at their backs than spawning at their fronts.

As an example, the above input completes for B2356/S46, which I was unable to complete with f2b, s2s, b2f, or your earlier f2b-like slanted geometry.
How interesting! That setup is fine and does as you suggest, although I usually try to keep U "X-like" (as you have) and W "Y-like" (not so much). The former helps keep "left", which really means "lesser U values", on the left side of the screen while the latter helps keep "down", which really means "greater W values", on the bottom side of the screen. I would probably have run "raw:1:0:2:0:1:2:0:0:-1" instead which is just flipping all the Y values. Looking at the partials from b2f searches in this rule, I think the pyramid slope is extremely shallow and in my testing just now, even a weaker slant like "raw:1:0:1:0:1:2:0:0:-1" terminates immediately.

I completed the search and seem to have proven that there are no period-2 c/2 orthogonal ships in Life-like rules with B23 and without B0.

This was very helpful, as it worked even better than the previous slanted search. This search covered the first 5892 rules in my rule list, but got snagged on B2367/S13. I then switched to s2s, which completed the remaining 2044 rules. If anyone wishes to replicate this result, I used the following simple bash scripts:

I think you will need to modify src/llsss/recentering.rs. Directly after line 409 (which reads "sm.post_hit(ss, &end_hstate, &thinnest);") add a line that says "panic!();" and recompile.

Presumably you made a similar change in src/llsss/state.rs as per Amling's instructions above. This works for ordinary llsss searches, but not for llsss-recentering-wao searches.

Edit: Amling, it would be a nice to have an option to stop after a ship is found.

Edit 2: an option to kill the search after it reaches some specified maximum depth (w_pos?) would also be nice (for those searches that get stuck extending a simple wick or wave). Consider this one low priority, but the other suggestion above high priority.

Edit 3: Amling, is there a way to run a symmetric diagonal search or a glide-symmetric diagonal search?

Part of the problem here is it's very unclear where to put it between multiple search types and multiple ends implementations. Would you expect such an option to halt the search after a first results in the ends DB? After a first partial that succeeded in period dividing? After a first result that was even symmetric (for "--ends even" in a s2s search)? Etc. All those different ends types are mostly responsible for their own behavior and don't really funnel through a common reporting mechanism. The closest is that "run_ssm_filter_ends" which is just a common library function for some of them, and, as y'all found out above, exists separately for fixed board and recentering searches anyway. I guess I shall think some more on it but my best idea so far is something like a separate "zero-and-halt" ends just for the zero ends case since that's what most searches are probably running anyway.

Sadly this one is much simpler to implement and has a very obvious way to stand alone as its own step. It would certainly be in terms of w_pos.

There is, but running diagonal aligned searches sucks. With something like this (c4d.in):

Of note:

(*) Wacky custom geometry where U=X-Y, W=T to run f2b diagonal axis-aligned. If your search is Kc/Nd where K does not divide N you're going to have to pick W yourself just like we used to have to pick it long, long ago before there were named geometries. If you want, you should feel free to post your desired V vector here and I can figure it out (W value as well as the deranged input file).

(*) Extra "00" after input file since I'm running a (previously-built) version from before that top pad change. If you're in the future you'll need to remove that.

(*) "--left-edge reflect:gse" to search glide symmetric even. All of odd, even, gso, and gse exist and I expect would work in diagonal geometries where they make sense but this edge is rather undertested.

(*) "--wao-left-edge-errors" for this WAO search to allow it to propose errors inside the left edge. For zeros edges this makes no sense and so isn't included by default.

(*) "--wao-idx ALL" now actually matters since there are now distinct places to place the first mismatch.

(*) That last "00" is "mid_steps" and even zero is actually enough to find the glider. The edge itself doesn't count and the code always does what you might consider one extra step to link up the left and right halves of the expansion it's already done.

EDIT: I have added "--ends zero_and_halt". I would not consider it guaranteed to exist forever if I can think of a better way to deal with this stuff. I have also added "--halts w_pos:NN". If the corresponding step is ever run with w_pos at or above that value it will halt.

If either triggers it should print out a WARNING about intentionally halting (and the reason) and of course in either case the search is almost certainly non-exhaustive.
