To copy the RLE of a pattern, click the "show in viewer" link on the above box to launch LifeViewer. Then draw your pattern, select it, and press Ctrl+C (not Command+C, if you're on a Mac).

If you're going to be doing serious work with cellular automata, I highly recommend getting Golly if you don't have it already. It can run enormous patterns that LifeViewer can't handle, often with a speedup in the thousands or millions (even billions if it works properly). The process for getting a RLE is the same -- select the patten and hit Ctrl+C. (Except that in Golly you can rebind the 'copy' action to whatever keyboard shortcut you prefer, and IIRC the default on Mac is the familiar Command+C.)

Also, just a word of warning: Oscillators, especially in Star Wars, are relatively common and often useless, so they aren't cataloged. Interesting patterns typically do one of three things: fill a "hole" in existing search efforts (such as the first p19 oscillator, Riley's p19), prove something (such as Ilkka Törmä and Ville Salo's solution to the unique father problem), or do something extremely interesting (such as _zM's computer). If you post the oscillator you found, don't be surprised if you end up being the butt of another "i found a new still life guys!!" joke.

My favourite subjects are informatics and mathematics. My hobbies are playing chess, playing the piano, solving variations of the Rubik's cube (11x11x11, Petaminx, Sudoku cube).

In 2023 winter, i knew there is "a wiki for CGoL", and viewed many pages.In May,2024,I had a account.Then i posted my frist rule.

(But i don't find a new pattern in Life yet.)

Hello Life Enthusiasts! I am excited to be part of the discussion after several months of observing (I am not sure how long, but it's been over a year since I was around for the discovery of P19 and P41).

I really enjoy seeing some of the discussions here, and hope to be able to contribute more once I learn more coding languages and how to use search programs (I am an aspiring Computer Science minor, not official yet).
Until then, I suppose I will remain mostly in the realm of Other Cellular Automota, where discoveries can be made more easily, or in the Sandbox having fun with CA.

Since my account is a bit more than half a year old now I figured I'd introduce myself.

Hi! I'm d/dx, and if the software you use doesn't support slashes, I'm derivative. I live in southern Poland. just kidding, I actually live inside your walls
CA is more of a casual hobby than a serious thing for me, I tried apgsearching once but just kind of stopped.
All of my tiny discoveries go into my sandbox thread (which is right below this post). I also maintain a growing family of Pinker Bluffers.
Sometimes I make a rule. My biggest pride here is my 2c/17 wishbone from plaines.

Half year old? Ha! My account is two and I still haven’t introduced myself. I’ve been interested in CA for years, joined this forum in 2022 to post some random boring explosive INT rule that broke naming conventions, and then left for a two year hiatus, but recently have gotten interested again. I mostly like OCA.

I got interested in Conway's Game of Life when I read the original Martin Gardner article in Scientific American. In 1970 I was the only person in my high school that used the Honeywell Time Share system and I went through reams of paper printing Life patterns. My interest in CA continued through the years. I retain my copy of Cellular Automata Machines. It was inspirational.

My ModernCA Java applet was designed for creating web-based exhibits. It was small, fast, and multi-state. It supported color, a generalized version of alternating rules, and hexagonal geometry. With it I created a Modern Cellular Automata site and a Color Game of Life Visual Exhibition site. Visitors to the Modern Cellular Automata site were immediately confronted with six different CA all running at once on the main page. Eventually I used the applet to create ModernCA Author. It used javascript to create collections of rules and patterns that could be embedded into web pages.

The rule notation I developed for the applet is entirely based upon a weighted counting algorithm that distinguishes near neighbors from far neighbors. Using weighted counting is fast. It provides a multitude of colors for free and it allows fine-grained specification of state transitions. The web site had running exhibits of Generations rules as well as a running reversible CA exhibit.

Life happens. Java went away and so did my web sites. I took a break from CA.

When I restarted CA activities I was pointed to ConwayLife. My problems creating an account were resolved after I figured out I signed up in 2011. Much has changed since then. I'm quite impressed that I can come here and click and be viewing running CA immediately.

My main interest is in fast CA and dynamic rules which produce large scale emergent patterns when viewed in color. PM's welcomed.

I'm Matt McIrvin--I've been interested in Life and cellular automata in general ever since the 1980s, brought in by columns by Martin Gardner, Douglas Hofstadter and A. K. Dewdney in Scientific American, and William Poundstone's pop book The Recursive Universe (in which he covered topics like a sketch of how one might build a universal computer/constructor in Life--actually running such a thing was beyond the computer capacity of the time, but now you can run one in Golly on your own computer).

I was trained as a physicist but went into software after grad school, but my messing around with CA and other topics in recreational mathematics (fractal geometry, turtle graphics, recurrence sequences, properties of the Riemann zeta function, old-fashioned calculating devices) was always a decidedly extracurricular hobbyist thing, born of the same youthful messing around with computers that led to my actual paying career.

I haven't done much of actual significance with CA, and what little I have, I've pretty much mentioned in the forums already. I'm interested on OCA and particularly, at the moment, close variants of Conway Life and how perturbing the rules in small ways perturbs the automaton's "natural" behavior.

Hello, I'm dl-rs. Well...
Perhaps some of you still remember the huge mess I got into nearly three years ago. Of course, I wasn't a good user then. At least you've got to give me credit for being better now, if only for a bit.
My username is dl-rs, and I'm occupied with Mathematical Olympiads lately. My other accounts include: XAN4 on AoPS and NuclearDog on many other websites. I'd be delighted to reply to PMs, especially concerning MO.
I live in China. It's great here. I'm in class 12, and there's even another CA enthusiast in class 11.
I'm mainly focused on OCA(especially INT), though I still try to mess with CGOL. My hobbies change. For example, when I created this account, I was interested with the music of two mobile games...

Hi, I am Ambrož!! (it is pronounced ambrozh for anyone wondering - ž is like the z in azure)

I am very new to this! I did have an on-and-off fascination with this game when I was younger, but just recently regained interest in it. Admittedly a lot of the words here are confusing but I’m sure I’ll pick it up eventually :p
I don’t have much of an internet presence outside of a twitter I rarely use, discord, and a (somewhat) small website called toyhouse, which is just dedicated to uploading/cataloguing characters and such
I am czech but I can’t fluently speak in Czech, I’m working on it though haha
