Still ill-defined (even accounting for unnecessary ill-defined counterintuitive forum jargon).

The entire idea of "counting rulegolfing tweaks" becomes vague and ill-defined for alternating CA (even two alternating two-state CA), and also becomes vague and ill-defined for multistate CA (even non-alternating). Here you have two alternating multistate CA:

Code: Select all

01245678/3/8|0123-ai4567/3i/8
That's ill-defined squared.

One rulegolf tweak away
Which is basically what I meant above, when I wrote "(even accounting for unnecessary ill-defined counterintuitive forum jargon)".
Even "one rulegolf tweak away" is unclear (although it is easier to understand the idea, it is still not precise enough). What counts as one tweak in this case?
I could just exchange the two Generations rulestrings and get 0123-ai4567/3i/8|01245678/3/8. Is that "one tweak"?
I could modify one of two rulestrings and get something like 01245678/38/8|0123-ai4567/3i/8 or 01245678/3/8|0123-ai45678/3i/8. Is that "one tweak"?
Does it still count if you modify both rulestrings at once?
Etc.

CARuler wrote: August 14th, 2024, 2:16 pm 1 INT change on 1 of the two alternating rules
Assuming that I understand the intended idea here, the scope would include only those cellular automata that can be defined in the form "q1/p1/8|q2/p2/8" (two alternating 8-state Generations CA) where q1, p1, q2, p2 are four sets of living conditions, and exactly three out of those four sets match corresponding sets written in the rulestring "01245678/3/8|0123-ai4567/3i/8", while the fourth set differs from the corresponding set written in the original rulestring by either removing or adding exactly one living condition that is fully specified with respect to the rulespace of (non-alternating) 8-state isotropic Generations CA.

I think that would include 204 different rulestrings:
  • one added (if it was absent) or removed (if it was present) fully specified isotropic survival condition in the first alternate (51 possibilities)
  • one added or removed fully specified isotropic birth condition in the first alternate (51 possibilities)
  • one added or removed fully specified isotropic survival condition in second alternate (51 possibilities)
  • one added or removed fully specified isotropic birth condition in second alternate (51 possibilities)
Note that I did not test these rulestrings, and don't know whether all those rulestrings define CA that are different in an interesting way, or there are different rulestrings defining an "essentially the same" CA.

Notability for a separate thread?

In addition to the question of defining the scope of the forum thread, another problem is that the original CA (01245678/3/8|0123-ai4567/3i/8) does not appear to be notable enough to deserve a separate forum thread (either for this particular CA, or for a small set of "nearby" CA).
There are way too many possibilities for people to invent their own alternating Generations CA and explore "nearby" cellular automata.

As a rule, almost all posts about an apparently-unexplored cellular automaton should go in an existing forum thread:
MDiOCA viewtopic.php?f=11&t=1971
TFYUCA viewtopic.php?f=11&t=803

The same holds for small rulespaces of "nearby CA".
Do not create a new forum thread, unless the topic already received significant attention.
