It is certainly possible to change the geometry, which may or may not be considered "improved clearance" depending on your goal(s):

Not only that, but T=1 of the pattern you posted is an octomino that converges to the same evolutionary sequence as the standard two-glider octomino. The standard octomino (upper right, below) is a grandparent of the one in the p162 torus oscillator, but the T=161 phase in the oscillator has a different predecessor instead, an
8-plet (upper left, below).
Code:
Select all
x = 54, y = 32, rule = B3/S23

A couple of more emitter ideas for the 2c/3 wire: [...]
2c/3 receiver, now down to repeat time 708: [...]
Here is another way to restore the ship, but it requires resetting Callahan's G-to-H and two boats. I do not know of a compatible boat factory for one of two boats; creating and routing additional gliders will take time; and that's not counting restoring the beehive:
Code:

Useless P to 2G due to non-connectable input.
Perhaps some possible use with a SL+G activation ?

one can replace the boat in the LWSS-to-G with a tub
Code: Select all
x = 18, y = 27, rule = B3/S23

It's known, but the variant with boat is preferred in constructions, since it's cheaper.
