Technical Naming of Complex Patterns (Game)

Post by BokaBB »

In this game each player posts a constructed pattern, usually a still life, and the rest are to deduce what would be the technical name of it using the complex pattern naming system. The patterns don't have to be strict but it is preferable.
I start.

Code: Select all

x = 18, y = 21, rule = B3/S23
$10bo$9bobob2o$6bo2bobobo2bo$5bobob2o3b3o$5bobo$6b2o6b3o$13bo3bo$6b2o
5b2ob2o$bo2bo2bo$b6o2$b2o2b2o$bo4bo$2b4o2$2b4o$bo4bo$2b3obo$4bob2o!
EDIT:The still life i gave appears pseudo. Hopefully it's still nameable.

Are you certain there's no cis, trans, para, ortho, shift, bridge etc. supposed to be in the names?

That sounds like it must be Sir Robin and its glider synthesis, or at least something truly remarkable in a comparable way.

The actual patterns are large (without any obvious or explained reason for them to be so large), multistate (without any obvious or explained reason why they couldn't be two-state), and apparently sufficiently uninteresting and trivial to avoid thinking too hard about trying to find some names for them.

Question:
why those two multistate patterns were deemed on-topic for this thread?

Because the above two patterns are complex.

I think those two patterns are way too complex to attempt "to deduce what would be the technical name of it" (which is quoted from the first post trying to explain the purpose of this thread).

Posting such "impossible to name technically in a sane way" patterns goes against the idea of the thread (which may or may not be a good idea, of course, but at least it was stated in the first post).

If they somehow happened to be notable, they could potentially get some non-technical (arbitrarily assigned) name. But that would differ from the stated purpose of this thread (i.e. offtopic). And those two patterns aren't notable for an "arbitrary assigned name", either.

You can just name the pattern without your rant.

I fail to see how posting loads of uninteresting large multistate patterns (that are often minor variations of each other, and lack meaningful explanations) could possibly be more productive, compared to stopping and thinking about the situation.

The patterns are uninteresting and essentially offtopic. They also cannot be "technically named" in any sane way (which is one reason why I didn't even attempt to).

It would make more sense to pause and think about the intended purpose of the forum thread, and probably also about the intended purpose of these forums as a whole, and about the purpose of OCA:LifeSuper.

my pattern was unique, but unname4798 had to ruin combining all the patterns by practically repeating what i posted.

Assuming good faith can be tricky, see for example WP:GFISNOT.
Obviously it makes sense to assume good faith when possible. It's in the rules.

The other side of this is, "Do not make it unreasonably hard for other people to assume you're acting in good faith". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WP:DGF

While I can see how that pattern looks like seahorse, and this can be seen as a good-faith attempt to describe the pattern, the posted pattern remains too large and complicated for technical naming. Turn the "head" in several independent ways, turn the "tail" in several independent ways, and you have a lot of variants, would it be reasonable to expect a clear, easily understood, unique technical name for each of those variants?
