That seems like way too much for one achievement! Perhaps just 3 points should be granted for Endemic achievements, if the community decides to implement this.

We've settled on a website, but I don't have any experience of making websites. Would anyone be keen to designing the website?

Anyways, here's a mockup for a user page:

That looks nice! here is my first version of a home page!

Does anyone want to design the website for the project? I am not demanding that someone must design it on the spot, I'm just saying that it doesn't seem like anyone besides Banananananan wants to, but I get it if you can't.

Code: Select all

#C [[ ZOOM 8 TRACK -3/87 -1/87 ]]
x = 4, y = 5, rule = B35ay/S2-i3-e4ey5j
2bo$b2o$2obo$bobo$2b2o!
The struggle itself toward the B3678/S23-a678 is enough to fill a man's heart.

I don't have any website creation experience, so I can't -- I'd be happy to help design any art or layout stuff though. Ideally, we could get support from a moderator... I don't know how plausible that is though. Even if we don't have someone to make the website, we can still make some design decisions like what color theme to go with and what fonts to use. Personally, for a color theme, I vote purple (not deep purple, stuff like lilac and lavender) because it's one of my favorite colors and it lines up with Catagolue's green and LifeWiki's blue.

Also, are we going to sort spaceships by period, displacement, overall speed, rule, discoverer, or a combination of these? I vote we sort them by rule first (where the ship is displayed in all rules it functions in), and within a rule we sort them by overall speed (but not period, so c/2o and 2c/4o are considered the same). Then on the ship's page it can say the unsimplified speed and discoverer.

Sure, that sounds like a good idea. In that case, maybe the default can just be grayscale or some very toned-down shades of a different color.

I would also suggest that the person who submits a ship (if they are the first to discover that ship) are allowed to input a name for that ship, to be used on the website -- making sure that it doesn't share a name with any other known ships and that it doesn't have any profanity (although I would hope that the CA community is better than that). If the discoverer chooses not to submit a name, the apgcode is displayed instead.

Do you mean that each user can choose how the website sorts ships, so the interface could look slightly different for each user? That could work, although from a coding perspective that might be tricky, and I don't see anything wrong with sticking to one sorting method. I'd like to hear what other people think though.

Interesting suggestions! I'll try and mockup some image ideas (logo, etc)... As for sorting, using rules seems like a good idea.

If we're going with a Catagolue-style logo, what object are we using? I would probably use something I've discovered, but that seems unfair, so I'm allowing the community to decide.

I'd also say we could also use Pentadecathlon IDs to describe objects - as an example, without any context, xq7_5duogwgoud5z04er9889re4zx1icci1 seems like a c/7o spaceship. Including "42P7H2V0" will tell you that it is a 2c/7o spaceship.

I vote we use an loafer, since it's a life-like spaceship with a somewhat rare speed.

Actually, why don't we just use only pentadecathlon ID's? The RLE will be available on the ship's page anyway, so we don't really need an apgcode since it's all spaceships.

@Hibiscus and @H. H. P. M. P. Cole, those both look really good! One question for Hibiscus -- under which tab do you actually find the database of ships? I might be dumb, but maybe we should add a "Rules" page where you find all rules with submitted spaceships, and in those rules you can find the spaceships, like on Catagolue. Also, also like Catagolue, maybe change "Search Programs" to "Software" just so everything's one word? These are just suggestions, no pressure to actually implement them.

Wait is this photo an actual page or is this just concept art?

Oh, also, I'd suggest putting the credits on a separate page, just a suggestion.

Basically just concept art. The real page will either look like the image, or it will be completely different if the community decides on something else.

What should we have under the statistics page? We could do things like "number of speeds discovered to date", "most common speed", etc... I don't think it could be exactly like the Catagolue page but it could be similar.

Here's what I would include:
  • Amount of spaceships found overall
  • Most common speed (and number of spaceships with said speed)
  • Most common speed found today (basically, the speed with the most amount of spaceships found today)
  • User with most submissions today
  • Average number of speeds, orthogonal, diagonal, and oblique, in all rules
  • Longest bounty left unsolved
Will create concept art for this later.

Sorry for the doublepost, but it's been 2 weeks... (How old is sufficiently old if making a doublepost?)
I've been looking at some of the early posts in this thread and thought: would it be a good idea to branch out to Generations rules?
Here's a variation of the logo for Generations rules (the spaceship is a c/9o in 0134/3/3)

The reason why it's the same width is so that you can change between the normal Project Omniraumschiff logo and the Generations logo without changing the position of the text.
As for Von Neumann rules, I am currently working on that now and will attach as soon as I'm finished.

Going off-topic here, but that's a nice little spaceship.

Back on topic. Our Project Omniraumschiff, as it stands, only focuses on Life-like cellular automata (and Generations). There's a few reasons why we haven't included HROT rules.
Range 2 HROT can support, if I'm not mistaken, 1125899906842624 (2^50) rules. Using the same method I used to get R2 counts, the highest birth condition we can get for R10 is 440. Add 1 for B0 (441) and multiply by 2 (survival conditions), that's 882. 2^882 = 32244539253885818258809801325470984284597615114509370247067914369303827060346976286280350090799388909587060241287666545341940158661052584060701841947200901910912273193298650156782929545680324771302748590589061792245363054977512313161523248215761503691988438775496704. So we have that many rules to work with for R10, and that's including rules where spaceships may not be possible.

H. H. P. M. P. Cole, meanwhile, sent me this idea:

Make a sortable table of bounties, and to improve on one you must put in the width you searched and the longest partial.
Here's a draft:

The struggle itself toward the B3678/S23-a678 is enough to fill a man's heart.

One ship

Code: Select all

x = 4, y = 4, rule = B34tz5q8/S234qz5r7e8
2bo$bobo$2obo$o!
EDIT by dvgrn: Replaced LV tags with pattern tags. @LWSSONHWSSONLWSS, please don't use LV tags so much -- you've gotten several requests about this already, and your posts are getting reported.
Please click this okay?

just reminding anyone who can to actually make this website at some point since this looks like an actually cool concept

also, a bit off topic, but:

It would be nice if you could use code tags or pattern tags, both of which are more compact.
If you didn't know, they look like these, but with square brackets:

(code)x = 4, y = 4, rule = B34tz5q8/S234qz5r7e8
2bo$bobo$2obo$o!(/code)

(pattern)x = 4, y = 4, rule = B34tz5q8/S234qz5r7e8
2bo$bobo$2obo$o!(/pattern)

EDIT by dvgrn: removed LV tags. Small side note -- quoting a full-sized LifeViewer without cutting down the quote, takes up even more vertical space than the original post.

Code: Select all

x = 19, y = 37, rule = B3/S23
