im big stupid (read the whole thing)
i dont feel like using lifeviewer anymore. its not nice...
i was expirementing with rules where the acorn is a spark, but out of nowhere lifeviewer just told me to die! like, WHAT?
WHY would life viewer tell me that?
i think im switching to golly for now.
edit: GOLLY HAS THE SAME PROBLEM! edit 2: im big stupid. i JUST realised that golly and lifeviewer werent doing it on purpose, they just put the letters in order and they just so happened to spell out an acronym that means something bad. i will continue to use lifeviewer and pretend this incident never happened

Re: the randominiminiminiminiminity of tommyaweosme's buried cavern tavern
I just wanted to write this to you, tommyaweosme.
How does one find discoveries? One does not simply look at one 1000x1000 soup, take all the objects from there, and say 'hey look there is my collection'. If one wants to find discoveries by hand, it is very arduous to do so. That is why search programs exist.
I understand you are on Chrome OS, but please at least download Golly. It's on the Golly site: https://golly.sourceforge.io/
As a start, I suggest you go find patterns in these rules (they are all your own, and these can support spaceships):
- Sparkling soda (B3-ceky/S2-a34cy)
- Cupcakes (B3/S23jnr4-k)
- JackLife (B3/S23-cejk)
- Skeleton stuck inside wall 10 hours (B34i/S245)
- Lobsters (B2-ae3-in45-n678/S12e3rn)
- Maze vs chaos (B3/S234-k)
- Space world ship thing (R2,C2,S2-3,B3,NW0000000000001110010100111)
And reconsider this post of mine that I made as a reply to one of your first posts: viewtopic.php?f=11&t=6308#p176214. Download nbsearch2a at least (it's very simple to set up and is a Golly Python script.)
For example, in your rule 'sparkling soda', I apgsearched it and made a little pattern collection out of what I found using apgsearch. (Since B3aijnqr/S2-a34cy is not supported by apgsearch as it is a non-canonical form, I replaced it with B3-ceky/S2-a34cy, the canonical form. You can confirm that all patterns you found in the former also work in the latter, since they are the same rule, just expressed differently.)
(The LWSS, MWSS, and HWSS work in this rule.)
Of course, I could have been more comprehensive and used rlifesrc and nbsearch2a, but you get the point. Search programs are not the be-all and end-all of CA exploration, but at least download a few (or program a few, if you feel that you are good at programming).
If you want me to I can apgsearch your rules for you: just tell me which ones. I am not trying to be critical, I am just telling you how you can contribute more productively to the community.

Hello there! Having been in a similar position to you back in 2017, I can see that you have enthusiasm for CA, that you have the drive to do research, and that you genuinely care about this stuff. I am on your side, and I am willing to fight for you. However, I am unable to do much without you also putting in the effort to learn. To start off, I will ask you questions. I am only able to ask one or a few questions at a time, because I need the answers to know what questions to ask next, Without these answers, I will be unable to offer you help and guidance. To start off:
What operating system does your computer use?

Ouch. That is going to make things far more difficult. Consider: ChromeOS is a glorified internet browser. The only workaround I know is to use an online virtual machine. Given that you seem to have an email address (one is required to register an account here in the first place), are you able to use it to register an account on repl.it?

Very nice! It's nice that RLS can run in a browser,

Oh my god. What is it with parents and obsessive control. Forget replit; I am not going to make you take a risk like that. Download the file I've attached to this post, unzip it, and open the html file inside. If you are able to do so, follow the instructions it gives you. Otherwise, we will need to try a different angle of attack.tommyaweosme wrote: May 31st, 2024, 10:07 pm tommorrow i will ask my parents to approve replit (today my parents are going to bed and i usually stay up an hour later)

also, i did get pop up.
edit: asking for sites is no risk btw ive asked for a lot they either say yes or no. thats all. no other stuff

Re: the randominity of tommyaweosme's buried cavern tavern
SLS is abbreviation of ScratchLifeSearch which is in pre-alpha development by me written using Scratch (technically a programming language because ScratchJR isn't). SLS is supposed to combine brute-force search (as in lifesrc) and soup search together. The end product will be converted into HTML file, which is widely multiplatform.

How exactly are the two combined? Also, how did you manage to authenticate with Catagolue? Why use Scratch which fights you when you try to do anything mildly complicated (declare variables in the middle of a function; nest arrays/lists; etc.) when you can just use JS directly and embed it in an HTML file?b-engine wrote: May 31st, 2024, 10:43 pmSLS is abbreviation of ScratchLifeSearch which is in pre-alpha development by me written using Scratch (technically a programming language because ScratchJR isn't). SLS is supposed to combine brute-force search (as in lifesrc) and soup search together. The end product will be converted into HTML file, which is widely multiplatform.
At least they're reasonable in that regard I guess.tommyaweosme wrote: May 31st, 2024, 10:22 pm edit: asking for sites is no risk btw ive asked for a lot they either say yes or no. thats all. no other stuff
Good. replit VMs have a habit of randomly killing themselves, so it's really nice that we have this option. Embedding search programs into HTML files allows them to run for much longer periods of time, since they'll be running directly on your computer and not a replit VM.
Anyone can come up with good ideas. Seeing this post honestly makes me question the idea of a "genius" in the first place.tommyaweosme wrote: May 31st, 2024, 10:52 pm more pattern collections for someone to find oneday and think im a genius even though i have an iq of 131 (according to some online test i took a few years ago) and geniuses are iq 143+.

1. You can choose whenever you want to brute-force or soup; they're separate algorithms themselves.wwei47 wrote: May 31st, 2024, 10:57 pm How exactly are the two combined? 2. SLS never upload the results to Catagolue; it stores them in an RLE file.
3. Scratch is the only programming language I've learned; I can easily fix those problems. The Turbowarp packager can convert sb3 to HTML, in addition of speeding the project 20 times.

edit: this is for bengine to learn
heres a programming language i made up on the spot called "benlang"
there are 4 keywords
talk
color
ask
answer
and 1 information type
string
talk (string)
this prints a string on the screen
color (hexcode)
this changes the color of the next talk
ask
this saves the user input to a variable called answer
answer
the variable ask saves to (use - around it when in talk and color)
for example a script in this would be:

1. That makes sense, though I wonder if it would be possible to pipe bruteforce results into "soup" searches (apgsearch stdin symmetry much?). Either way, shouldn't we split this into two separate search provrams?b-engine wrote: May 31st, 2024, 11:01 pm1. 2. Normally I'd have hesitation with not uploading to Catagolue, but I'd imagine that this is intended for cases where Catagolue is unreachable.
3. I am also kind of concerned that it may be difficult to edit Scratch code simply because its feature set is so limited. I'd suggest snap.berkeley.edu as it appears to be "scratch but with a more complete feature set" but external tools like Turbowarp are probably lacking.

I made a "programming language" for my unfinished B-Univ counter machine. Here's the commands below:tommyaweosme wrote: May 31st, 2024, 11:07 pm edit: this is for bengine to learn
here's a programming language i made up on the spot called "benlang"
Code: Select all
# N means that you can set it to any natural numbers.
# computation
resethead [ob]
sethead {N} [2obNob]
goto {N} [3obNob]
set {0-1} [4obo(o)b]
ifheadon [5ob(...)b]
...
end [6ob]
# construction
extend [7ob]
retract [8ob]
left [9ob]
right [10ob]
readto {N} [11obNob]
Here's an example of a script that uses computational commands:
Code: Select all
resethead
sethead 1
ifheadon
set 0
set 1
goto 3

1. I think soup search could be applied into bruteforce searcher. However I don't think bruteforce could be applied to soup search...wwei47 wrote: May 31st, 2024, 11:22 pm 1. 2. Isn't Scratch unable to access any other websites? I have many workarounds.
3. Scratch is theorically Turing complete, isn't it? I've more knowledge to replace those unavailable features with the existing scripts.
