In general, it would be helpful if people gave a very brief description of how their patterns were found. Something as simple as "by hand", or "with X search program", or "completed a partial by so-and-so" would do.
I'll take that comment personally too ;)

family is overrated as heck. why am I supposed to love an adult woman who couldn't even be bothered to raise her child right? just because she gave birth to me? why should I bother to hug a man who tells me that my problems are all my fault? because he's my father? why am I supposed to be nice to someone who violated me and then accused me of being the "aggressor" 7 years afterwards? because me and her have the same parents? it goes against everything i know about having a healthy connection with someone and I feel so stupid for thinking that my family actually cared. maybe the whole "your family cares about you" thing was just a very long running joke that flew over my head, it wouldn't be the first time :lol:

I've seen the downside of using RLE to encode checkerboards, so I decide to improve it.

If there's a certain repeating text, you can put it in brackets then add a number before it:

Code: Select all

# optimized as 10(ob)!
obobobobobobobobobob!
You can put the optimized text in another brackets too:

Code: Select all

# optimized as 16(16(ob)$)!
x = 15, y = 16, rule = B3/S23
obobobobobobobo$obobobobobobobo$obobobobobobobo$obobobobobobobo$obobo
bobobobobo$obobobobobobobo$obobobobobobobo$obobobobobobobo$obobobobob
obobo$obobobobobobobo$obobobobobobobo$obobobobobobobo$obobobobobobobo
$obobobobobobobo$obobobobobobobo$obobobobobobobo!
For true checkerboards the optimized RLE will look like this:

Code: Select all

# optimized as 8(16(ob)$16(bo))!
x = 16, y = 16, rule = B3/S23
obobobobobobobo$bobobobobobobobo$obobobobobobobo$bobobobobobobobo$obo
bobobobobobo$bobobobobobobobo$obobobobobobobo$bobobobobobobobo$obobob
obobobobo$bobobobobobobobo$obobobobobobobo$bobobobobobobobo$obobobobo
bobobo$bobobobobobobobo$obobobobobobobo$bobobobobobobobo!

I am genuinely surprised that the LeapLife billiard tables ranked last in OCADOTY. Though I should have made it clear that this wasn't about the billiard tables themselves and about a "new" search tool (LeapLife hack for dr). At the same time, there has to be something that places last in stuff like this.

Sokwe wrote: May 23rd, 2024, 11:41 pm When describing a diagonal width, it seems standard to refer to the number of half diagonals, so the c/3d ships would be w13, and the c/4d ship would be w10. If you want to reduce ambiguity, you can say these are "diagonal widths" or say "width 10 hd" or "10 half-diagonals" or something similar.
My question is what the equivalent unit would then be for oblique ships.
There is no standard for describing the oblique width of an obliquely traveling spaceship. There is however a standard for diagonal widths of diagonally traveling ships. If you want to use a non-standard measure, I suggest including something that identifies it (like how including units in real world measurements indicates the measuring system).

I don't see why the cells in the (2,1) displacement represent 2 "lanes". What would 1 lane look like? It would be helpful if you explain how you get 2 lanes for an arbitrary displacement. I also don't understand why the width of the segments in the (2,1) case is 0.41 instead of 0.4 = 2/5. It seems the 2 lanes are split into 5 equal segments.

1 lane isn't exactly defined here. I just observed that a displacement of (2,0) was usually considered to be two columns, and that a displacement of (2,2) was usually considered to be two full diagonals. It felt intuitive that a displacement of (2,1) should still be two of SOMETHING; I decided to use "lane" for lack of better words.

Because the text was supposed to say "0.4l" instead of "0.41" and I didn't exactly choose the best color for the text, making it unclear.

How do you define two lanes for an arbitrary displacement (x,y)?

...I don't exactly do so. But I can say that a displacement (x,0) is x columns and that a displacement of (x,x) is x full diagonals, so for 0<y<x, I'd consider a displacement of (x,y) to be x lanes.

Be patient. Slow down. Definitely don't ever post just to inflate your post count. That's a misuse of the forums, even in the Sandbox, and it tends to annoy everyone else who is using the threads that you're posting on.

The most important thing to be documented is knowledge, rather than common usage. LifeWiki aims to be an encyclopedia of Life-CA-related knowledge, rather than a glossary of common words and phrases.
"Existing usage" that can be observed on the forums cannot be reliably documented, because it is often confusing, counterintuitive, and/or self-contradictory.
As a place to document knowledge, LifeWiki should fix, define, explain and consistently use some sane, intuitively clear, easily understood terminology, regardless of whether or not that terminology matches "existing common usage".
