a) an orthogonal spaceship under 30 cells
b) a diagonal spaceship under 30 cells
c) an infinite growth
Here is a p3 orthogonal c/3 spaceship (found with qfind 2.3)

Code: Select all

The rule B2/S12V is hilariously longliving. Look at this 64x64 soup which lives for about 402,000 generations:

Find a non-explosive B2a rule where a common non-photon 3-cell spaceship and a fairly common gun exists.

This rule only explodes linearly and a fairly common interaction between stretchers can create a gun

Code: Select all

x = 10, y = 10, rule = B2a3e4iy/S1c2c3e

I think the only way to make it not grow infinitely every time would be to B2c, and seems pretty hopeless. The closest I could get was this rule. The smallest c/2 is 4 cells and not very common.

Code: Select all

x = 5, y = 1, rule = B2aci3e/S02ci4e

Make a multistate von Neumann neighborhood rule, which behaves identically to CGoL when step size is set to n.

This is my failed attempt with n = 3 (i stopped here due to landing on a rule with lots of types of oscillators):

I realized that the other challenge, of making a non-explosive rule with both B1e and B2a is impossible, since all patterns contain one of them. So here's another challenge, make a non-explosive rule (without B0) with every B2 transition. Extra points for including B3i or B3a,

I'm not sure that taming B1e+B2a is necessarily impossible. I remember some old work on taming B1c; while it was incomplete, it seemed pretty promising. viewtopic.php?f=11&t=5184&p=128032&hili ... er#p128032
Patterns WILL grow forever, but if you can turn everything into space nonfillers, they won't really EXPLODE.

I mean using single cells (not metacells) in a von Neumann neighborhood rule (not CGoL) to emulate CGoL (not a von Neumann neighborhood rule).

Make a multistate von Neumann neighborhood rule, which behaves identically to CGoL when step size is set to n.
use isotropic r2 von neumann for better luck

2-state is multistate after all

Find a small isotropically endemic still life!

A still life is endemic when every possible 3x3 configuration of cells have occured in the pattern and thus only works in B/S012345678.

The still life you build is not required to be strict, in fact strict still lives cannot be endemic since it's impossible to achieve S0 in that situation.

Here's an example of a endemic still life, paste the pattern into https://catagolue.hatsya.com/object and click Identify, and it should say that it's endemic:

Code: Select all

x = 21, y = 24, rule = B/S012345678
7b2ob3o$5b4obobo$8bob3o$4bo3bo$4b2ob2ob3o$4bobo6bo4b3o$2bo3bobob2o7b2o$3obo2b

o$2bobo2bo3b3obo$bobo2b6ob3o$bo3b3o2bobo$b11o$2b3o2bo$2b2obobo3b2o$2b2o5b3o$
4b2o2b2ob4o$6b3o4b3o2bobo$6bo6bob2obobo$15b5o$16b4o!
When you start building your own (or optimizing the above still life), you can check if it's endemic using the same way as you checked the above still life. If it doesn't say it's endemic, it will specify a range of rules so you know which configurations you're missing.

When you post your endemic still life (in here), specify if it's optimized for population or bounding box.

Actually, the feature "Identify" on the linked page doesn't check whether or not every possible 3x3 configuration of cells occurs in the given pattern.
Instead, it checks whether or not some orientation (rotation and/or reflection) of every possible two-state 3x3 configuration of cells occurs in the pattern.

In other words, there are already at least two distinct problems, with 'endemic' understood relative to a specific rulespace:
(1) find a still life that is endemic to the cellular automaton "Nothing happens" (B/S012345678) relative to the 2-state isotropic R1 Moore rulespace, (this can be checked using the form on the page https://catagolue.hatsya.com/object)
(2) find a still life that is endemic to the cellular automaton "Nothing happens" relative to the full 2-state R1 Moore rulespace.
