Re: Golly 1.3 for Android
Sorry but I'm not really sure what you mean. Does it fail to install or start up? If so, do you get an error message? What device do you have exactly and which version of Android does it use?

So, I'll ask again, what device are you using and which version of Android does it use?

I have the same problem when opening the other app store that's not Google Play: But Google Play works.
(I decide to give 4 stars, but doing so will results in name leak)

Google play store is blocked in mainland China, maybe upload to Trevorrow's server?

Can't you use a VPN to bypass that block?PHPBB12345 wrote: May 22nd, 2024, 2:04 pm Google play store is blocked in mainland China, maybe upload to Trevorrow's server?

Re: Golly 1.3 for Android
Some issues has been found in the Golly 1.3 release.
The help page for QuickLife, HashLife, Generations, Larger than Life, JvN, Super, Ruleloader are accessible from Help/Algorithms, but only Ruleloader is accesible from the rule-changing Rule dialog while others produce "net::ERR_ACCESS_DENIED".
The links under References may sometimes produce "net::ERR_CLEARTEXT_NOT_PERMITTED".
Currently none of the links under Online Archives is accesible, but it is not certain if this issue is due to the app or internet connection.
Without Lua support, the patterns under Three-Dimensional does not make sense.

Re: Golly 1.3 for Android
Thanks for reporting those bugs, and for uploading the apk file. We'll try to fix those bugs in a future release. Not sure when that might happen -- we probably need to wait a couple of months and see if any other bugs are found.FlutterWithKSparkler wrote: May 23rd, 2024, 3:50 am Some issues has been found in the Golly 1.3 release.

Re: Golly 1.3 for Android
Well, Golly is classified as "game" even through it's a simulation program itself rather than a game. Is there any reason of classifying it as game?

Re: Golly 1.3 for Android
The phrase "Conway's Game of Life" could be a clue. Not that it really matters, but if it was classified as a simulation app (arguably the correct category) then I suspect far fewer people would find the app or stumble upon it accidentally.b-engine wrote: May 23rd, 2024, 9:54 am Well, Golly is classified as "game" even through it's a simulation program itself rather than a game. Re: Golly 1.3 for Android
This will cause misconceptions. Conway's Game of Life is not a game, but the name is misleading, so we must tell users about it.Andrew wrote: May 23rd, 2024, 10:07 pm The phrase "Conway's Game of Life" could be a clue. To my knowledge, there're lots of people (mostly eastern) that resist games.

Re: Golly 1.3 for Android
Some other possible "large categories" are "education" and "science".
However, I don't see any serious issues with leaving Golly under "games". Note that there are single-player games (e.g. Patience (game)), which are already "not quite games" from the viewpoint of someone who believes there must be at least two players in a game.
"Zero-player games" or mathematical simulations can be viewed as another step in the same direction. Look through various definitions in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Game -- which of those can/cannot be applied to Life/CA?

Classifying Golly as game causing my phone to turn on "game engine" when I open Golly. Is there any other problems about this?
